Earlier this week, the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources probed the disastrous propane shortage. The simple question was: How could this have happened? The simple answer was: its was infrastructure's fault. We had plenty of gas, but we were making better money sending propane overseas so we didn't have the pipeline to spare for homeowners and businesses here. Industry's answer was that people who use propane should "plan-better" since this is the way it will be so long as we can make more money exporting the propane than keeping it here at home. In other words, buy ahead in summer, so you have it for the winter. Big ideas about a "Strategic Propane Reserve" were floated around the chamber, but that won't solve the problem for us who depend on propane next winter. You heard it from Thrifty Propane first, when years ago the pipelines began to shut down the terminals between Texas and the export terminals. Thrifty plans ahead to stay ahead.
