THE HOUSTON SHIP CHANNEL CLOSURE SAYS "PLAN AHEAD - BUY NOW"
The price of propane dropped for a day or two in response to the closure of the Houston Ship Channel by an oil spill. If you were shopping for propane earlier this week, you saved a little as the propane leaving the United States was backed up. Now, as the Channel has reopened, the price of propane, which has already gone up 3% in the last two days, will continue its march upward as less and less propane is in inventory for domestic use. This continuing shortage, the "new normal" we saw this winter, was caused by " . . . record-high exports that continued to drain supplies into the peak heating season.One reason companies proceeded with exports and pipeline changes that left propane consumers vulnerable this winter is that producers of many critical commodities-including oil, natural gas, propane, gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and heating oil-are not obliged to distribute those fuels in a way that benefits U.S. consumers. If it's more profitable for companies to sell those products overseas or reconfigure pipelines, then whenever possible, they will do so."
