 TESOL NEWSLETTER

August - September 2013

FROM JAMES STAKENBURG

It's been an exciting 2013 so far for me, with a trip to Dallas for the International TESOL Convention, a trip to Bryce Canyon in and Zion National Parks for vacation, a change of pace working on our accreditation submission for ACCET, and, of course, a chance to meet a lot more people who are now teaching here in NYC and abroad.

This newsletter, we feature Dela, who did the TESOL course with me way back in 2008.  I ran into her at the New York State TESOL Conventi
James at Bryce Canyon NP
Bryce Canyon National Park
on last year, where she was presenting the findings of her Master's program research, and I was very excited and inspired to hear her story.

We also have the inside scoop from Jose on teaching in the Dominican Republic, along with a teaching idea that improves your students' accuracy AND fluency.

As always, if you have any ideas you want to share with others or questions about our school, you can post them on our Facebook page or send me an email.

See you on Facebook, Twitter and our blog

Enjoy the rest of the summer!

"You can find many jobs at bilingual schools, international schools, and both public and private universities. There are also many language institutes that teach ESL /EFL. They are always in the need of native speakers and want you to have a TESOL/TEFL certification and some prior teaching experience. There are many state, public, private universities. Lots of bilingual and international schools, catholic schools. The UASD, Unibe, Intec, PUCAMM, Dominico-Americano University, The Carol Morgan School, St.George's, St. Joseph's, New Horizons Bilingual, The American School of Santo Domingo and many more.

Typical working hours and conditions depend on where you teach. You can work morning, evening, night, weekends-day/afternoon. It varies from institution to institution.   Salaries are based on experience but ..."(to read more about teaching in Dominican Republic click here)

Dela Martin
Dela Martin

This month we are featuring Dela Martin who took the TESOL Certificate course in September - December, 2008.

"Early in my career, I worked mostly in administrative positions. I worked at a school, a non-profit and law offices. Most of my days were spent behind a computer and I had fewer opportunities to interact directly with people. Volunteering in the community helped me remedy this situation. I mentored ESL students at an elementary school. I also volunteered as a conversation partner at a program for adults.  These experiences allowed me to interact with people from different cultures and help them better themselves. I enjoyed these experiences so much that I wanted them to turn into a career. I continued to volunteer with immigrant organizations because I wanted to ensure that teaching ESL was the right career choice for me. This led me to take an intensive, fourteen-week TESOL certification course. The course trained me to teach adults and I enjoyed working with the students and other TESOL professionals.

The course really got me excited about teaching. I was clueless about how to structure lessons and the skills needed to help students learn.  I learned teaching theories and practices that work best for ESL students. Each class was interactive and gave me ideas on how to teach students in my future classroom. The best part of the course was the supportive environment sustained by my classmates and instructors. We helped each other build confidence in delivering lessons to the students at Rennert.

TESOL is a field where you are constantly learning.  After the program, I taught an ESL course to a group of senior citizens at a community center. I used the lesson planning skills I learned in the course to create units that were specifically targeted to their needs and interests. I also applied to the TESOL graduate school program at Hunter College because I wanted to learn how to teach ESL to children.

In graduate school, I had many opportunities to work with students in New York City classrooms and build my confidence in teaching young children. I also had the opportunity to conduct theory-based research. The idea for my master's thesis came from the summer I spent teaching intermediate and advanced students at Rennert. I often brought my laptop to class and would supplement the lessons using audio, pictures, and video. This inspired me to conduct research on how technology could be used to help ESL students in the classroom and I presented my research on how the iPad could be used to help students develop literacy skills at the New York State TESOL conference in November.

I have completed my first year of teaching in a New York City Public School in East Harlem. I teach ESL to children in kindergarten through 8th grade.  My students are mostly Spanish speakers, but I have students who speak Chinese, Arabic, French and African languages. A lot of my job centers on helping children learn to read and write. My first year of teaching has been great but I still have so much to learn about how to best help my students learn. So, I will continue the learning process by seeking out opportunities to help me grow as a teacher

 Practicing Vocabulary: The 3-2-1 technique

  Vocabulary 3-2-1

This activity has been show to improve both fluency
and accuracy. It can be done alone (at home) or in pairs (in class).

  1. Students think of story or summary. They make brief notes.
  2. The student tells the story/ summary in 3 minutes. If they are alone, they should record it. If they are doing it in class, their partner should make notes.
  3. If they are alone, they then listen to recording and make notes of things that were not clearly expressed and think how to improve. If summarizing, they should try to incorporate new vocabulary from the reading/ listening source.
  4. If they are doing this in pairs, then ... (click here to continue)
