May is National Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental Health Month 2015 B 4 Stage 4National Mental Health Month was started 66 years ago by Mental Health America (MHA) to raise awareness about mental health conditions and the importance of good mental health for everyone. This year's theme is "Addressing Mental Health Before Stage 4." This theme calls attention to the importance addressing mental health symptoms early, identifying potential underlying diseases, and planning an appropriate course of action on a path towards overall health.

When we think about cancer, heart disease, or diabetes, we don't wait years to treat them. We start prevention before Stage 4. So why don't we do the same for individuals who are dealing with potentially serious mental illness?

Get Informed. Get Screened. Get help. When feelings and emotions get overwhelming, it's hard to know what to do. Sometimes, these early symptoms might not ever become serious. Like a cough, they often go away on their own, and are nothing to fear. But sometimes, they are a sign of something more severe and shouldn't be ignored. Taking a screening is the first step to protect your mental health, and addressing mental illness before Stage 4.

Research shows that by ignoring symptoms, we lose ten years in which we could intervene in order to change people's lives for the better. During these years most people still have supports that allow them to succeed-home, family, friends, school, and work. Intervening effectively during early stages of mental illness can save lives and change the trajectories of people living with mental illnesses.

This Mental Health Month, we are encouraging everyone to learn the signs, ask for help if needed, address symptoms early, and plan an appropriate course of action on a path towards overall health.

One of the quickest and easiest ways to determine whether you are experiencing symptoms of a mental health condition is to take a mental health screening. MHA has online screening tools for depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

National Mobility Awareness Month Contest for Free Wheelchair-Accessible Vehicle

National Mobility Awareness Month is dedicated to showing the world how people with disabilities live active, mobile lifestyles.

May is National Mobility Awareness month The over 600 members of the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association (NMEDA) are committed to bringing people living with disabilities the mobility solutions they need to live Life Moving Forward. Each May, they enlist the help of our extensive NMEDA dealer network, their industry partners, and spokespeople to celebrate National Mobility Awareness Month. Together, they reach out to communities across the United States and Canada to raise awareness of accessible vans, trucks and specialty vehicles, hand controls and steering aids, transfer seats and seating solutions, wheelchair tie downs, and other adaptive mobility equipment available.

The Davert family and their new vehicle NMEDA also gives "Local Heroes" the chance to win their very own wheelchair accessible vehicle.

NMEDA will be giving away four wheelchair accessible vehicles: one to a caregiver, one to a senior, one that is battery powered for in-town driving only, and one in the general category. Bay City's own Ken and Missy Davert won a new vehicle back in 2012 and it's had a tremendous impact on their lives.  If you're in need of an accessible vehicle, you should consider entering the contest. The contest runs through the end of May. Click here if you'd like to enter the contest or click here for more information.

Regional Celebrations Planned for 25th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act

A Pyramid of Wants and Needs

JoeFor Joe, working with computers has always come naturally. He has Comptia certifications in A+ and Network + and he's a Microsoft-certified technician. His dream is to be a Network Administrator for a large firm. But for this 24 year-old Midland resident, realizing that dream means overcoming a significant barrier...over-spending.

Even though Joe was working, he was growing increasingly frustrated with his inability to save money or to spend the money appropriately.  His spending habits created significant tension between Joe and his mother.

"I live with my mom and not having money to help with bills or rent has made things difficult at home," said Joe. "It's frustrating because I want to live on my own but I couldn't control my impulse-buying enough to even help pay, let alone pay my own rent."

Joe met with his case worker at Michigan Rehabilitation Services. They quickly identified Joe's impulse-spending as a significant barrier to his independence. MRS referred Joe to Wendy, an Independent Living / Vocational Rehab specialist at DNMM.

"When I first met with Wendy, I was at rock bottom," said Joe. "I had no savings account and my checking account had a negative balance. I was making $180 per week at my part-time job, but I was spending over $200 per week."

"From our initial meeting, it was clear Joe had a goal of becoming self-sufficient," said Wendy. "He knew he had a spending problem. He simply needed to find a way of seeing the path to correcting the problem."

Spending Pyramid Using motivational interviewing techniques, Wendy and Joe set out to change his behavior by establishing goals and exploring paths to reach those goals. During those explorations, Joe came up with the idea of an expenditure pyramid. Just like building a pyramid starts with the bottom layers, so should spending. Identifying all expenses that are absolutely needed (i.e. food, gas, rent, bills, etc.) and creating a brick for each one along the base of the pyramid. Then items that are less of a need but still important (new work clothes) could go on the next level, with "wants" (video games) along the top.

"Picturing it like a pyramid helped because I know I can't get to the higher levels until I build the lower ones," said Joe. "This helped me understand the fundamental different between a want and a  need."

Joe and Wendy would meet several times over the following weeks. Each time they would work on a new approaches aimed at helping Joe rein in his spending while laying his own path to self-sufficiency.

"I made notebooks where I write out the pros and cons of each potential purchase," said Joe. "I also created cards with pictures of money on them that I "give" myself every time I deposit money instead of spending it. It's like collecting cards."

These visual and tangible techniques have already had a significant impact on Joe's life. His relationship with his mother is improving and he no longer feels trapped under the burden of a bank account in the red.  He now has an emergency savings, a rent savings, and, as he's all to happy to say, over $500 in his checking account.

"Joe is definitely on the right track," said Wendy. "He's meticulous and motivated. He's come so far in just a few months. I know if he continues to use the tools and aids he's created, he will absolutely realize that dream of living independently."
