Survey Seeks to Involve People with Disabilities in the Transportation Planning Process

Survey responses requested by September 15

Clip art of pseron with ideas about various transportation methods In an effort to increase the participation of people with disabilities in the coordinated public transit-human services transportation planning process, Easter Seals Project ACTION is conducting a survey to identify both barriers to and best practices for participation from people with disabilities. We invite responses from both organizations that have and that have not participated in the transportation planning process as well as from individuals with disabilities who have or have not been involved in the transportation planning process.

Please take a few minutes to complete this survey based on your knowledge of the current transportation plan(s) in your state, region, or local area and/or your experience with the transportation planning process in your community. Also, please provide any suggestions you have both for organizations to better involve people with disabilities and for individuals with disabilities to become involved in the transportation planning process.

The survey will be active until the end of the day on Monday, September 15, 2014.  Thank you so much for your time!

If you have questions, please contact Kristi McLaughlin at kmclaughlin@easterseals.com or (800) 659-6428.

Do You Use Assistive Technology? We'd Like to Hear From You!

The Michigan Assistive Technology Program is taking a closer look at the issue of mobility equipment (wheelchairs, powerchairs, walkers, etc.) and trying to find out more about the user's experience with obtaining their equipment, maintaining their equipment, and servicing their equipment for repair.

The ultimate goal is to get mobility equipment users better connected with resources and information to ensure equipment is working well for them.  If you would, please share the following survey widely among your networks and especially among people who use mobility equipment.

Chemical Bank Announces Home Accessibility Modification Program

Owning a home is something toward which many of us strive. For people with disabilities, and in particular, those who may have recently acquired a disability, being able to fully access one's home is of paramount importance. And just like any home upgrade or rehabs, modifying a home to make it accessible can often be quite expensive.

With that in mind, Disability Network is pleased to announce Chemical Bank of Michigan has implemented a new Accessibility Modification Program (AMP) to assist existing homeowners whose incomes fall within 80% of the area median income per county, based on family household size. Qualifying families can receive up to $10,000 for eligible repairs.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

  • Owner-occupants must have resided in the home for 18 months
  • Must agree to continue to live in the home for 5 years
  • Eligible properties are single-family homes and duplexes as long as the owner resides in one half
  • Must meet age requirement of 62 or older. Exceptions may be made for those with permanent disabilities.
  • Household members with a disability of any age currently receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), or reasonable equivalent state or federally-funded disability benefits.

ELIGIBLE REPAIRS / MODIFICATIONS

  • Ramps
  • Handrails
  • Levered Door Handles
  • Bathroom Modifications
  • Kitchen Modifications
  • Wheelchair lifts
  • Widened Door-ways
  • Other eligible repairs

Up to 25%  of AMP funds may be used for deferred maintenance items such as: roofing, siding, and water heaters.

For more information, contact Disability Network of Mid-Michigan at 1-800-782-4160 or email info@dnmm.org

This program is funded by Chemical Bank and FHLBI.

FCC Adopts New Rules to Expand Text-to-911 Availability

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has adopted new rules requiring text messaging providers to allow Americans to send a text to 911 to get help during an emergency. The rules ensure that all wireless carriers and text application providers are prepared to support text-to-911 by the end of 2014. Text-to-911 can provide a lifesaving alternative for people who are deaf, hard of hearing or who have a speech disability.  For more information:

Senior Poverty: A Large and Growing Problem

15% of seniors at poverty level A new Poverty and Opportunity Profile from Half in Ten and the National Senior Citizens Law Center (NSCLC) highlights the growing problem of senior poverty in America.  Today, 15 percent of people aged 65 and older are living in poverty in the United States according to the supplemental poverty measure. And, the number of poor seniors will dramatically increase over the next 10 to 20 years. These and other facts about food insecurity, homelessness and how many people have long-term care needs are illustrated in the profile. Half in Ten is a project of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, the Coalition on Human Needs, and The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights.

Report Finds Fewer Federal Workers With Disabilities
Despite a push to increase hiring of people with what are known as "targeted disabilities," the participation of such individuals in the federal workforce has actually declined.

Back in 2002, 1.07 percent of federal employees had targeted disabilities. By 2011, that figure fell to 0.90 percent, according to a new report from the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Targeted disabilities include intellectual disabilities, mental illness, deafness, blindness and other conditions considered by the government to be the "most severe impairments."

A federal goal calls for such workers to make up at least 2 percent of the government's workforce. However, only nine agencies have achieved that threshold, the EEOC said.

What's more, in cases where individuals with targeted disabilities are employed by the federal government, they earn less money on average than other workers, the report found.

"While the federal government continues to be a leader in workforce diversity, further progress is needed for it to become a model workplace for all employees," said Carlton Hadden, director of the EEOC's Office of Federal Operations. "Agencies should pay particular attention to increasing diversity among the senior executive service and at the highest grade levels, as well as enhancing recruitment and retention of people with targeted disabilities."

questionCommunity Feedback: Question of the Month

We need your input! Here's an easy way for your voice to be heard!

As part of our on-going efforts to make our communities accessible, we're asking our readers questions each month. We'll use your answers, your suggestions, and your opinions as a basis for determining what we can do, in terms of services and advocacy, to build fully inclusive communities.

September 2014 Question:

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) has been in place for several months. Now that it's provisions are taking effect, do you feel your healthcare needs are being met? If yes, how has your situation improved since before passage of the ACA? If no, what challenges with respect to healthcare do you continue to face?

Click here to submit your answer(s) to the question.  Your responses will be anonymous and we will not share your name or email information with any third party.

STATEMENT OF ACCESSIBILITY

DNMM advocates for the removal of barriers to independence and full inclusion of people with disabilities throughout the Mid-Michigan area. DNMM pledges to ensure accessibility. Each year, DNMM conducts a review of its own architectural, environmental, attitudinal, employment, communication, transportation, and other barriers that may exist which prohibit full access to our services.

If you have any issues of concern regarding the accessibility of DNMM services and facilities, we encourage you to share that information with us.
