DR DUBEC

From the Desk of Dr. Dubec

Our last final Board of Education Awards Meeting highlighting student achievement was held Tuesday evening at West. Parents, families, and friends filled our gyms at each award night. Thank you to everyone who came out to these events to support our students.

This is a very exciting time of the school year.   On June 5, 224 eighth graders will walk across the graduation stage, and move on to high school.  Our students are such beacons of promise.   There are so many intangibles that contribute to a child's life success and graduation.  I appreciate most,  the one important ingredient that all of our students take with them; Love.  Parents, family, friends, teachers, support staff, administrators, and board members are all the bonding glue of love.  Over the past 9 years teachers and support staff administrators and board members have worked hard to provide our graduates with opportunity and guidance.  Parents have given untold hours of what can only be described as a parent's love to their child.  Everyone that is part of the Palos 118 family can take pride at graduation.   We are seeing the importance of caring about kids and a desire to help them succeed.  As adults I think we all come to realize that this glue is what makes us as a community special and important.   The excellence of Palos 118 would be impossible without it.

Again, congratulations to our graduates and their families.  Enjoy a safe and relaxing summer, and please encourage your children to put away the electronic devices once a day and read.

Sincerely,

Joseph M. Dubec, Ed.D., J.D.

Superintendent of Schools

New Principal Posts for 2014-15
stu

The Board of Education appointed Stuart  Wrzesinski the new South Middle School Principal to succeed Dr. Ron Cozza who is moving to the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum  position in the Central Administrative Office.   Mr Wrzesinski  is the current principal at Palos West Elementary School.  Mr. Wrzesinski assumed the West post this year and has been tapped for the South Middle School principalship because of his past middle school experience as a teacher and his background as a school administrator.   In his short time at West, Mr. Wrzesinski has demonstrated his caring for children and has become an important part of the Palos 118 family.  Mr. Wrzesinski is looking forward to this new assignment.  "I enjoy working in the Palos 118 community and am excited to be going to South. "

Assuming the principalship at West will be Jennifer Biel. Mrs. Biel is perhaps better recognized  as Jennifer Peloquin long time West teacher and most recently the West Assistant Principal.  Mrs. Biel is eager to return to West in a full time capacity as principal.   Mrs. Biel interrupted her career to get married. She and her husband built a new house and spent time establishing new family life with her son and his children.  She has always had a passion for working with children and Palos West.   "I am so glad that this opportunity presented itself for me to return to the Palos 118 community and the West school that I love"

The new assignments will begin on July 1, 2014, although Mr. Wrzesinski and Mrs. Biel are already beginning the transition.

Palos West takes their tweets to Tech 2014 in Springfield

Palos West Elementary School was among approximately 60 schools statewide that took part in the annual TECH 2014 "Students for the Information Age" event on May 8 at the Illinois State Capitol Building in Springfield.

Students demonstrated to the public, elected members of the Illinois State Senate, and the House of Representatives how technology is being used in the classroom to improve student achievement.  Computer workstations were set up in the Capitol Building Rotunda so students could show how technology has helped them with their schoolwork.

Representing Palos West in the demonstration was Yazeed Haleem, Michael Jeffers, Julia Kotas, and teacher Ms. Toni Hotzfield.  Their presentation, "Terrific Tweets!" demonstrated how Twitter is incorporated into their classroom on a daily basis.

"Their performance was outstanding," said proud teacher Toni Hotzfield.  "The students were able to capture the tasks associated with Twitter, and share with our legislators and other visitors how we are able to use this social media in our classroom.  They also showcased other forms of technology that we utilize in school such as Book Creator, Genius Hour, and Edmodo."

It was an enjoyable first trip to the state capitol for all three Palos West students and their families.  "We were taken on a behind-the-scenes tour of the Capitol by Senator Cunningham," said Mrs. Haleem.  After their presentation, "the kids were able to see how the voting process worked and hear stories about the sculptures and artwork in the building. They were all very excited."

TECH 2014's purpose is to raise awareness of the critical role technology plays in preparing students to succeed in today's world, and to show the need for increased funding for classroom technology.  TECH 2014 is a not-for-profit initiative presented by Illinois Computing Educators (ICE), and is supported by education and business organizations.
