From the Desk of
Dr. Dubec

The Palos 118 School District staff and administration are happy to welcome you to the 2013-14 school year. During the summer, we have been working on a number of cleaning and maintenance projects, and our schools will soon be ready for students and a new year. The board and administration are proud to again present a balanced budget for this coming school year. The board has been working diligently to ensure that Palos 118 remains financially viable, especially during these difficult economic times. The annual budget for the 2013-14 school year will be available for review on our website beginning August 14, 2013. The 2013-14 budget will be approved at the September 17, 2013 Board of Education meeting.

First Day of School

The first day of school is Wednesday, August 21, 2013. This is a full day of pupil attendance. Class and bus assignments will be online. You will receive a separate letter explaining how you can go to the Palos website to see your child's class and bus assignment beginning on August 14, 2013 at 8:00 a.m. Watch for your letter with access information.

NEW

Our parent and student calendar/ handbook has been expanded and is available online at www.palos118.org. Please use the parent drop down button to view. Parents will receive a print copy of the calendar/handbook the first week of school. Please note that the print copy is an abridged version of the online copy. Also, the most up to date calendar can be found online.

Our schools remain excellent because of the support and help we receive from parents and our community. If you have volunteered in the past, thank you. We need your help, so please consider continuing or becoming a volunteer this school year. Parents can volunteer to help in the classroom, at school, and/or to support band or chorus events. Another way to get involved is with our Parent Faculty Association. The PFA does so much to help our schools and is always in need of volunteers. You can also support your school(s) by attending special events hosted by the Palos 118 Educational Foundation. This year at all of our schools, parents will have the opportunity to sign up to volunteer during our September curriculum nights.

Our curriculum nights at Palos West (Tuesday, September 3), Palos South (Wednesday, September 4), and Palos East (Thursday, September 5), will begin with a general parent meeting in the school gym at 6:30 p.m.

Parents are encouraged not to bring children on these nights. The general meeting will include staff introductions and information about the new school year. Parents will then have the opportunity to visit individual classrooms where teachers will provide additional information about their classroom programs and activities. Prior to the general meeting in the gym, the PFA will be available from 6:00-6:30 p.m. to meet parents and explain the many opportunities available for parents to become involved with our schools.

Back to School Picnic

Our annual Back to School Picnic will be held on Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at Palos South from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m., rain or shine. Everyone is welcome to attend. Shuttle buses will run from St. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Church parking lot throughout the event.

We are looking forward to another successful year. Thank you for your continued support of District 118.

Sincerely,

Joseph M. Dubec, Ed.D., J.D.

Superintendent of Schools

This summer was a special one for my family. The most memorable part was spending time with family from out of state at a reunion in Tennessee. I truly enjoyed watching my kids reconnect with their cousins by the swimming pool. Being new to Palos South, I am looking forward to everything.  I can't wait to work with the students, staff, and parents. The event I am looking forward to the most though, would have to be graduation.  I've known most of the 8th grade class since they were in kindergarten at West, and will be honored to lead them across the stage in June 2014.

Summer Reading: "The Fred Factor" by Mark Sanborn.  It is an inspirational book about a dedicated mail carrier who makes a difference in the lives of those he serves.

The highlight of my summer was visiting northern California. I spent two days in San Francisco and a couple days in Sonoma County. Both were beautiful, and I look forward to going back in the future. I am looking forward to hosting the District 118 ELL night in September. This is a great way to reach out to our growing school community and highlight how important we feel parent involvement is at all levels. Another community event, the Cardinal Chase, is something we would like our entire school community to be involved in; including the Recess Relays and some school-wide health initiatives. I'm also eager to work with teachers and students to meet our instructional goals using the new reading series. As a staff, we are thrilled to have McGraw Hill and the components of this comprehensive program to enhance our student learning!

Summer Reading: "Gone Girl" by Gillian Flynn. Although it has been on the NY Times best seller list for a while, I was excited to finally sit down and read it this summer, and have loved every minute of it.

This summer, we vacationed in Florida, spending most of our time in Orlando.  The greatest part of that trip was seeing my two daughters react when they saw certain Disney characters.  We are also eagerly awaiting a new addition to our family, which should join us near the beginning of the school year.  I am excited to build relationships and become acclimated with students, parents, and staff members.  I have run in multiple races this year, so I am very excited for the Cardinal Chase on October 6th.  With the new Wonders Reading Series, I look forward to witnessing the benefits it has to offer our students in 118.

Summer Reading: "Born to Run" by Christopher McDougall, an inspirational book on running to help me along while I train for races.
