From the Desk of Dr. Dubec
I was very proud at the Board of Education meeting Tuesday night held at Palos South, where our district's dedication to excellence was mirrored by the awards we were privileged to present. Presidential Academic Fitness Awards were given to 135 eighth graders for academic excellence. South students were also recognized for their achievements in the National Geographic Geography Bee, You Be the Chemist, and Palos South's Young Authors Contests.
These past few months, many parent volunteers have been planning major events for our school district. All who attended the PFA's Sham Rock N' Roll event March 9 had a wonderful time, and enjoyed great music and bidding on unique raffle items. The Foundation is preparing to host a Trivia Night at Trio Restaurant on April 13, so be sure to visit the Foundation's webpage for more information on what is sure to be a fun event.
Palos 118 is committed to learning, and it shows in the consistently high Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISATS) scores our students continue to earn. I would like to take this opportunity to thank parents for preparing students for the standardized test earlier this month by sending them to school each morning well rested and properly nourished. Thank you to our district staff for their efforts during ISATS and every school day throughout the year.
Please note that because an emergency weather day was used on Tuesday, March 5, school will be in session on Monday, April 1. This will enable school to end on Friday, May 31, and not require everyone to return on Monday, June 3. Although this was noted on our calendar, we realize some parents may have anticipated April 1 as a non-attendance day, and may be traveling for spring break and the Easter holiday. Parents may call their child's absence in on our absence phone line, and in such an instance, the absence will be considered excused.
Finally, I would like to wish everyone an enjoyable, safe, and well-deserved spring break. I look forward to the last few months of the school year filled with many fun activities and events, with a renewed spirit for learning.
Sincerely,
Joseph M. Dubec, Ed.D., J.D.

Over 220 Palos 118 students, parents, and staff participated in the second annual Family Trivia Night at Palos South on March 13. For seven rounds of facts and fun, participants enjoyed their own snacks, with other concessions provided by the Palos East Student Council.
