 Christ-Centered Classical Curriculum

Now Enrolling for 2014-2015

Junior Kindergarten - 12th Grade

March 2014
 A Note from Mrs. Lowder

Greetings NHCS families,

Spring is here and we are all feeling energized with the warmer temperatures around the corner!  We have had a few glimpses of spring on campus and we are taking every advantage of enjoying it outside when we can.

Thank you all for continuing to share our mission, "equipping the hearts and minds of students to impact the world for Christ" with others.  Because of YOU, we had our largest Shadow Day ever on March 13th with 26 students attending.    We have our final Shadow Day for this school year scheduled for May 1st.  Please be sure to share this with any families that may have missed out previously.

Many of you were on campus celebrating "Swing into Spring" this past Saturday, March 22nd.  This was a fun-filled day for families to enjoy kickball and flag football.  We even had the Salisbury Fire Department join us in the festivities.   The Booster Club sold hamburgers and hot dogs and were instrumental in helping make the event a success.   That evening we held the final Revive event for the year for our youth.  This has been a wonderful time of celebration and fellowship for middle and high school students.

I'm so proud of our basketball teams' success this season and a special congratulations to our varsity girls for their conference and tournament championships!  Our spring sports are off to a great start with baseball, volleyball and flag football already beginning.  Please be sure to get a schedule of games and don't forget to come support our Eagles!

I look forward to seeing all of you on April 3rd at 6:30 p.m. in the Helen Kelley Smith Gymnasium for "A Night with Josh McDowell".  There are a few seats remaining and you don't want to miss this opportunity.  Come help us welcome prospective families and many guests from our local community to our school next week.

Mr. McDowell will also be with us on April 4th sharing topics with our middle and high school students on "What is Truth", "Bible - Fact, Fiction or Fallacy" and "Why True Love Waits".   He will also be sharing an impactful message on "The Perfect Storm" for our pastor appreciation luncheon from 12:30 - 2:30 p.m.  Please be sure to invite your pastor to this and have them RSVP to Nikki Eagle by Monday, March 31st.

God is doing amazing things at North Hills Christian School!  I appreciate all your continued support and prayers.

Blessings,

Maria Lowder,

Executive Director, NHCS

Helping the Community, One Box at a Time
By Brittany Hogan & Avery McGrail- Honors Academy

The High School Jr Civitan Club from North Hills Christian School went to the warehouse of Rowan Helping Ministries to pack food boxes. This was not the first time that NHCS has served.  Two years ago, the NHCS basketball team packed food boxes in RHM's old warehouse. Also, last April, a group of eight seniors cooked and served the noon meal at the RHM kitchen.  The 11 students found the experience to be enjoyable and amazing. Sophomore, Sarah Lynn Carlton said, "It (serving at RHM) was a wonderful opportunity that I was honored to participate in."  The food which the students packed included milk, oats, green beans, applesauce, black-eyed peas, sweet peas, and peanut butter. The amount of food that is donated to fill the boxes amounts to roughly 50,000 pounds a month, and on average, boxes are given out to 55 households a day, Five days a week. The Junior Civitan Club was able to put together the almost 300 boxes needed for just one week.  Rowan Helping Ministries is adding a new facility, which will become the new food kitchen. This new kitchen will be able to host 400, as compared to the current facility which can hold approximately 60. The clothing area and food pantry are staying where they are, but they will be renovated to make more room. The NHCS Jr. Civitan club's feelings are best summed up in the words of its Vice President, Mariah Murdock, "To serve the community, is to serve God."

5th Grade Students Build Log Cabins

Students in the 5th grade classes of Leslie Hunsucker and Prabu Gupta recently read The Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare. It is a story about a boy and his dad who move to Maine and together they build a log cabin. In order to bring the story to life and allow the students some creative expression, each child was asked to build their own log cabin replica. Students were given parameters and a few specific requirements, but beyond that, they could use their imagination to complete the project.

Thirty versions of the log cabin came in and students shared their projects with their classmates. The students had six weeks to put their cabins together and many employed creative techniques. Melanie Long used flour and tea to make the chinking, or filler, that goes between the logs. Her fireplace and chimney were constructed using small stones. To create the landscaping around her cabin, Ashley Mays used moss from her own backyard. Aydan Patterson used Swedish fish in his play-doh river, and Elisabeth Houghton made her river out of blue hair gel. Each student's individuality came through in this project.
The cabins were on display at the main branch of the Rowan Public library.
