North Hills, New for 2013:
"You'll Wish You Could Go Back to School"
What's happening over at North Hills? This year, our school has been abuzz with private tours and open houses, to the point that students are no longer surprised to see strangers being led through our halls - they just smile and wave. So, what's got the community coming in for a closer look?
Additional Classical Curriculum Implementaton in 2013-2014
During the 2012-2013 school year, North Hills has been adjusting its curriculum from modern to classical. Classical schooling was the method of education practiced for decades, up until the shift to modern "socialized" schooling. This year, our school has sought to return to the classical learning system, which centers on teaching students not just how to memorize and socialize, but how to think and articulate. The shift has already begun in the lower grade levels, starting with the history curriculum. Changes that will soon be made in the upper school program include the introduction of a senior philosophy course for high school, logic courses for ninth grade, and rhetoric courses for eleventh and twelfth grades.
Renovations and Growth
In addition to this incredible shift, the school's Capital Campaign has provided funds for expansion and renovations that are taking place all over campus. The school has already opened its doors wide to the community for several open houses and similar events, eager to share its growth with all in search of a one-of-a-kind education experience.

Members of the senior and junior classes prepare the boxed chicken lunches for the Habitat for Humanity fundraiser. | Community Service Day
On Tuesday, March 19th, North Hills continued the school's annual tradition of becoming more than just a body of Christian students. Classes were canceled for the day, and middle and high schoolers were sent out into various locations in the community to offer themselves not only as Christian students, but as Christian servers. Locations visited by North Hills students on Service Day included the Salisbury Civic Center, Salisbury Police Department, the Pregnancy Support Center, Main Street Mission, and others.
"This is one of the many things I'll really miss about North Hills," says Kat Paul, a senior who will be graduating with the class of 2013 this May. "Service Day makes me feel so fulfilled, because I believe strongly in something that my school believes strongly in as well - enough to let all of us take a day to go and serve others. It's amazing how much fun we have and how much we get done." Kat Paul spent Service Day at the Salisbury Civic Center, packing lunches for the Habitat for Humanity fundraiser. "I love it. I've looked forward to it every year, ever since I first came to North Hills."

North Hills Teaches New Ways to Improve Learning Abilities
A new brain-training program at North Hills Christian School (NHCS) is challenging the notion that intelligence is fixed and cannot be improved. NHCS teachers Doris Plummer and Shanon Vickers are heading "Train Your Brain" after-school sessions for students in fourth grade and above. Both women received training to become therapists using Feuerstein's Instrumental Enrichment (FIE) at the Southeastern Center for the Enhancement of Learning in Alpharetta, Georgia, last June. The FIE program used by North Hills provides therapies that train the brain to function more fully and consistently. The program targets cognitive struggles of students and teaches new ways to approach problems as well as the most effective ways to solve them. Read the full story here!

First Graders Hold Greek Festival to Celebrate Ancient Greece
In light of North Hills' switch to classical curriculum, first grade teacher Katie Campbell decided to make learning about the history of Ancient Greece an unforgettable experience for her young students. During early stages of learning - such as in Mrs. Campbell's first grade class - the classical curriculum focuses on making the learning experience as interactive and engaging as it should be for learners of such a young age. With this in mind, Mrs. Campbell's answer to teaching Greek culture to a class full of six-year-olds seemed obvious: throw a Greek festival!
The students' "Greek Day" was held in March, and included six "stations" of Greek activities for the children to enjoy, including "discus" (frisbee) throwing; an Olypmian obstacle course; Greek storytelling with English teacher Kay Madden; "Pictures by the Parthenon" (pictured left); and a Greek feast of hummus, pita chips, zucchini, and baklava.
"It was a memorable experience for all, and the kids are STILL talking about it," says Mrs. Campbell. "It really shows how these kids latch onto history, especially compared to our previous Social Studies curriculum." |
