Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest Winners

Essays written by Alexis Mangus and Jalen Houston, students in Leslie Hunsucker's fifth grade class, were recently selected as first and third place winners, respectively, by two independent panels of judges.

The contest, sponsored by the VA Medical Center, was held to honor the memory of Martin Luther King, and elementary students were asked to write 100-125 word essays entitled, "The Meaning of Martin's Dream." Alexis shares her first place win with Kayla Young from Sacred Heart, and Jalen shares third place with Nichol Warren from Cleveland Elementary and Liberty Koontz from Morgan Elementary. The students were invited to read their essays in front of family and friends at a ceremony on January 14, 2013 held at the W.G. (Bill) Hefner VA Medical Center.

NHCS 7th Graders Selected by Duke TIP Talent Search for Academically Gifted Students

Ten North Hills Christian School seventh graders were selected and recognized by the Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP).

The students were selected as part of a national talent search of academically gifted students based on their performance on grade-level standardized tests for scoring at or above the 95th percentile. The following North Hills Christian School seventh grade students were selected:  Caroline Cody, Chloe Corley, Avery Frank, James Houghton, Mary Kaufmann, Camantha-Rae Lyerly, Breanna Miller, Richard Parker, and Shelby Turman.

Through the talent search, the students are invited to take the ACT or SAT alongside college-bound eleventh and twelfth grade students. Duke TIP Seventh Grade Talent Search Coordinator, Julie Bennington, says about this year's talent search, "Qualifying for the talent search is commendable and an honor. We're pleased to welcome a new class of seventh grade Talent Search participants and look forward to inspiring these students to reach their full academic potential in middle school and beyond." The Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP) is a non-profit educational organization that is recognized as a leader in identifying and serving the educational needs of academically gifted youth.

Avery McGrail Helps Out NHCS Through Eagle Scout Project

This past December, eighth grade NHCS student Avery McGrail decided to benefit both the North Hills community and the community of Salisbury through choosing to base his Eagle Scout Project on the NHCS campus.  McGrail and other volunteers planted a line of over sixty crepe myrtle trees along the edge of the North Hills soccer field bordering West Innes Street.

McGrail says he was inspired to take this on as his Scout project after witnessing a car accident caused by a driver who had become distracted by a soccer game.  He said he hopes the trees will grow, creating a natural scenic barrier between the players and the busy road.  Over fifty volunteers showed up to support his vision, among them members of North Hills' own Cub Scout troop.

Avery McGrail has been a Boy Scout with Troop 443 based at St. John's Lutheran Church for three years.  We congratulate him on his achievement of becoming Eagle Scout, and we thank him for his civic contributions!

Junior Civitans Make a Difference

During an induction ceremony on Tuesday, January 29, twelve new members joined the NHCS High School Chapter of Junior Civitan: Sara Lynn Carlton, Brittney Hogan, Savanna Li, Becca Loflin, Brittany Lyerly, Candace-Craig Lyerly, Jordan Moore, Mariah Murdock, Jo Park, Camyron Pressley, Jordan Smith, and Maddie Sweitzer.

The North Hills Christian School Junior Civitan has been making an impact on their community in many ways through the years.  This month, we asked the club's leader, Mrs. Constance McGrail, what the work of Junior Civitan means to her and to the city of Salisbury.

Q: What's been your favorite event/fundraiser to take part in with the Junior Civitan members?

I loved doing the Special Olympics last year, and I also really enjoyed working on Habitat for Humanity houses this year.  Both were new opportunities, and everyone loved working on both.

Q: What is the mission of Junior Civitan?

It's still "impacting the world for Christ", we just do it through actively serving others.  I'd say it's a continuation of our school's mission.

Q: Do you think on the whole, Junior Civitan clubs make a difference?

The clubs nationwide are very active in so many different aspects of their communities.  It's a new world for me, but I keep hearing about all the different things that they do... I do think ours has made a difference, as well.

Q: What's the best part of working with the NHCS Junior Civitan?

The students are just great to work with.  I feel so proud of all of them, and I love working alongside them.  They always represent our club well!

A Note from the Head of School Search Committee

January 30, 2013

Dear North Hills Friends and Families,

We know that many of you have been eager to learn more about the ongoing Head of School search process, and you have been praying for this important activity in the life of NHCS. The following will hopefully provide some information regarding the current status of the process.

Our search committee (most of whom are or have been parents of NHCS students) consists of five faculty members, representing all areas of our academic program. In addition, there are non-faculty parents along with board member co-chairs, Bill Adams and Tim Norris.

Through opportunity listings with ACSI, Southern Teachers Agency, other agencies, several colleges, as well as word of mouth; we have received close to sixty resumes from various candidates. This has been a national search, and we are reviewing candidates from as far away as Hawaii, California, Oregon, Montana, and Texas, and many other states. The opportunity has been public for a little more than month and a half, so we feel very encouraged by the level of interest that has been shown.

We are also excited by the potential candidates that we have identified thus far as well as by the progress that has been made to narrow the field. At this writing, we have selected six impressive individuals with whom we will begin an active interview process. We also have five other candidates in whom we are very much interested, and we will keep open contact with these individuals, as well. We are resolved as a committee to find a spiritually mature man or woman with a distinctly biblical worldview and the vision, leadership, and experience to lead NHCS for years to come.

The committee welcomes engagement and interest from the NHCS community in the search for the next Head of School at North Hills Christian. If you would like to review the public opportunity profile for the school, you may  CLICK HERE. Inquiries and resumes may be submitted via e-mail to [email protected]

We urge your prayers for NHCS during this search, as well as for the committee as and candidates being considered.  We will continue to provide updates as the search progresses.

Sincerely in Christ's Service,

Bill Adams and Tim Norris, Co-chair of Head of Search Committee

Committee members: Keith Beck, Susan Colosanti, Mike Duncan, Jeannie Ogg, Doris Plummer, and Shanon Vickers (an additional non-faculty parent will soon be added)

Save the Date: State of School Meeting

Be sure to mark your calendars for our annual State of the School/Reenrollment meeting on Monday, February 4th at 7:00 p.m. This event is an important "touch point" among the school board, administration, faculty, and parents, and allows us the opportunity to provide you with an update regarding many recent developments: our search for a new head of school, the school's financial position, renovation projects, and other plans for the 2013-2014 school year. There will also be improvements to the way we structure our tuition/tuition deposit, daycare charges, and how we handle applications for tuition assistance. We urge you to attend this important meeting in order to learn more.

Teacher Highlight: Coach Charissa Duncan

Charissa Duncan has been promoted to Athletic Director for North Hills Christian School. Last year, she served as assistant athletic director and as instructional assistant for the school's gifted and special services program. In addition, she coached a number of sports for NHCS: middle school cross country, JV volleyball, elementary girls' basketball, and softball. Duncan is a graduate of Guilford College, where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Sports Medicine and Health Science. She is pursuing a Masters in Professional Counseling from Liberty University. At Guilford, Duncan played softball and competed in cross country; she currently holds several team and career records. She received honorable mention conference honors, and was awarded the Guilford College Best Female Athlete and the Richard Joyce Most Improved Athlete awards.  Our newsletter staff sat down with Coach Duncan to learn a little about what it's like to teach at North Hills.

Q. How did you end up at North Hills?

I had to move back home after Guilford, and I didn't know what to do with my life.  I was stuck with dad [Mr. Michael Duncan, Latin and Bible instructor at NHCS] and he mentioned that they needed a PE teacher at North Hills.  I didn't get that job, but the school also needed a new AIM instructor.  It was basically God opening up doors.

Q. What's your favorite part of your job?

Working with the students, definitely.  It's awesome to see how kids change and how God is working through them here, and also how He's working to reach them through the athletics program.

Q. What are your plans after NHCS?

This is kind of a dream job - not that I'd ever have thought of being an athletic director, but sports are my passion.  After North Hills, I'd love to maybe coach college softball...otherwise, I'd love to be a missionary.  I'm also working on my master's in counseling, so I could also enjoy ending up working with people who are addicted to drugs or alcohol.

Q. Is there anything about your experience as a staff member at NHCS that you feel stands out, or anything you feel you definitely wouldn't get at another school?

Sure... NHCS is like a family, and when I came here, it was so amazing to see how close-knit the community here is.  I immediately felt very accepted.  You can't get that just anywhere.

Welcome, Baby Macon!

Macon Spence Childress, son of NHCS science instructor Kerrie Childress, was born on January 7.  Macon was 7 pounds, 7 ounces, and 20.25 inches tall.  Congratulations to the new mommy and daddy!
