CaSE responds to Budget 2016
CaSE has responded to the Chancellor's budget, published earlier this week.

Announcements on maths education, big data and part-time science degrees are welcome. CaSE pointed to variable evidence behind the proposal to convert all primary and secondary schools to Academies and questioned the impact the policy would have on science teaching.

Amidst warnings by the Office for Budget Responsibility of low productivity growth globally, CaSE reminds the Chancellor that science and engineering are one of the few government investments that actually drive productivity upwards, delivering a rise in private sector productivity by 20p per year in perpetuity for every 1 government spends on R&D.
NAO takes BIS to task over capital awards for science facilities
Ahead of the Budget, the National Audit Office (NAO)  published a report on BIS's capital investments in science projects. The report found that BIS "has not used good quality information to decide which science capital projects to invest in to optimise scientific and economic benefits".

You can read CaSE's response to the report here.
Anti-lobbying clause in government grants
CaSE has raised concerns with the Cabinet Office over plans to introduce a new anti-lobbying clause in government grants.

We've written a joint letter to the Cabinet Minister, with the Campaign for Social Science, and had an article published in The Observer, warning that the plans may have negative consequences for publicly-funded research.

CaSE is working with officials in the Cabinet Office and the wider scientific community to help resolve the situation and enable the use of research findings in government policy-making.
Science, engineering, and the EU Referendum
With the EU Referendum announced for 23rd June 2016, CaSE is seeking to raise the profile of science and engineering in the EU debate.

CaSE has published a joint report with the Engineering Professors' Council, examining the role of EU membership in UK science and engineering research.

You can also get involved in the discussion by attending the following events over the next few months:
New CaSE member
CaSE welcomes the Institute of Acoustics as new members of CaSE. We look forward to working with them, and all our members, to ensure the views of the whole science and engineering sector are being heard.

To discuss CaSE membership for your organisation get in touch with our Membership Engagement and Development Manager Sharleni Inbanathan.
Making Britain a world leader in digital skills
CaSE and University Alliance organised a roundtable discussion last week, to inform the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee and its inquiry into digital skills.

The meeting was hosted by Google and chaired by Nicola Blackwood, Chair of the Science and Technology Committee, and involved representatives from universities, sector bodies and business.

You can read the Digital Skills roundtable summary outlining the main discussion points and recommendations that emerged from the event.
Watch the Annual Lecture with the Science Minister
You can now watch the CaSE 30th Anniversary Annual Lecture, given by the Universities and Science Minister Jo Johnson, and hosted by the Royal Institution earlier this year.

The Minister took the opportunity in his speech to highlight the importance of the UK's international research partnerships and the strength of ties with European research partners. The lecture was followed by a Q&A session with CaSE Director Dr Sarah Main (from 33 mins).

The video was kindly sponsored by the Institute of Physics.
