CaSE 2014 Annual Lecture - 'NASA's Journey to Mars'
On 14th November, the NASA Chief Scientist, Dr Ellen Stofan,  gave the 2014 CaSE Annual Distinguished Lecture.

In front of a sell-out audience at the Science Museum IMAX, Dr Stofan set out the advances and challenges driven by NASA's journey to Mars.

Afterwards there was a reception event among the museum exhibits. The event was kindly sponsored by the Royal Astronomical Society, the Science and Technology Facilities Council, and University College London.

CaSE Intern Nancy Williams has written a summary of the event here. You can also listen to an audio recording of the lecture and view photos of the event.
CaSE Announces new Chair and Board of Directors
CaSE is pleased to announce the election of its new Chair of the Board of Directors, Professor Graeme Reid. Professor Reid is Chair of Science and Research Policy at University College London and was previously Head of Research Funding at the Department of Business Innovation and Skills.

We also welcome Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock MBE, Professor Jim Al-Khalili OBE, Nida Broughton, Conor McKechnie, and John Misselbrook, as new members of the CaSE Board.

Chaired by Professor Reid, the Board will meet several times a year to discuss CaSE's work in campaigning for the interests of UK science and engineering.

We also say goodbye to Yvonne Baker, Professor Ian Haines, Dr Richard Davis, Dr Norma Morris, Professor Sandy Steacy, and the former Chair, Professor Hugh Griffiths, who are stepping down, and we thank them for all their hard work over the years.
CaSE Election 2015 Letter in The Times
Ahead of the 2015 General Election, CaSE has written to the leader of every political party with at least one MP, asking them to set out their manifesto commitments that are relevant to the science and engineering sector.

A copy of the letter has been published in The Times.

Also sent with the letters were three election briefings which detail feasible and practical actions that could be taken in the next term of Parliament. The briefings are:

The responses to the letters will be analysed by CaSE and made publicly available on the CaSE website.

European Scientific Adviser Role Abolished
CaSE is extremely disappointed to hear that the position of Chief Scientific Adviser (CSA) to the European Commission President is to be abolished.

A new European Political Strategy Centre is being set-up to replace the current arrangement, however there are currently no plans to retain the CSA role.

CaSE signed a Sense About Science letter on this issue earlier in the year and we urge the European Commission to create a permanent home for independent scientific advice.
