Government Reshuffle for Science and Engineering
Last week's reshuffle by the Government has seen changes across ministerial responsibilities for universities, science, education and skills:
  • Minister of State for Universities, Science and Cities, Dr Greg Clark
  • Secretary of State for Education, The Rt Hon Nicky Morgan
  • Minister of State for Skills and Enterprise, Nick Boles
  • Minister for Life Sciences, George Freeman

In this widespread reshuffle we've seen multiple changes to people and portfolios, and CaSE has set out what this might mean for science and engineering. CaSE has also said goodbye to David Willetts, who has stepped down as Science and Universities Minister, after four years.

We look forward to continuing close and productive relationships with the new Ministers on behalf of the science and engineering community.

Research Funding - CaSE Responds
BIS Capital Consultation
CaSE has submitted a joint response with the Science Council to the BIS Capital Consultation, calling on the Department to set out principles for investment, including tying capital to resource.

CaSE has also written directly to the Science Minister setting out our views.

Priorities for Scientific Research
CaSE Director Dr Sarah Main appeared before the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee earlier this month, as part of their inquiry into priorities for scientific research.
CaSE responds to the SET stats
CaSE has responded to the Government Expenditure on Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) for 2012-13, published by the Office for National Statistics last week.

Previously published by BIS and known as the 'SET stats', the release provides the opportunity to look at the expenditure on SET across Government and any changes year on year.

At the moment, when compared historically and internationally, Government investment in science, engineering and technology could be in better shape. You can read CaSE's full analysis here.
Labour Science Policy
CaSE has been working with the Labour Shadow Science Team over the last month as they develop their science and innovation green paper.

As part of this work CaSE organised three roundtable events with the Shadow Science Minister Liam Byrne; two for CaSE members to feed in their views and one to discuss the Economic Significance of the UK Science Base with the report authors.
Scientific Advice in Policy-Making
CaSE organised an Opinion Forum last month, hosted by the British Library, bringing together key figures from across government, parliament and the scientific community, to discuss scientific evidence in policy-making.

Along with CaSE member survey responses, the discussion from the roundtable will help inform manifesto recommendations for the 2015 election.
