Migration experts back CaSE on sunset clause
Last month CaSE wrote to the Government, warning that its proposals to introduce a 'sunset clause' for the Shortage Occupation List (SOL) could damage the science and engineering sector.  The letter was supported by twenty-two senior individuals and  institutions from CaSE's membership and across the wider sector.

Now a new report published by the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) - the Home Office's independent advisory group on immigration - has agreed with our concerns and  advised against the introduction of a 'sunset clause'. We hope that the Government will follow these recommendations.
CaSE Cross-Party Science and Engineering Debate
New Chief Scientist appointed at the Foreign Office
CaSE has welcomed the appointment of Professor Robert Grimes as the new Chief Scientific Adviser (CSA) to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, but urged the department to improve the oversight and support mechanisms surrounding to the role.

CaSE recently compiled a scorecard to rate the suitability of each departmental CSA across six key criteria - the FCO only scored positively in two.  We have recommended that the department create a Scientific Advisory Committee to support the work of the CSA, and that the CSA position is given a seat on the departmental board and control over the department's research budget.
Acting Director
As of the 8th March, our Director Imran Khan will have left the organisation. He will be taking over as Chief Executive of the British Science Association in April.

We will be announcing our new Director shortly. In the meantime Beck Smith will be taking over Acting Director.
