'4Growth' Campaign - Event and Updates
| | Following the launch of the 4Growth campaign - which calls on the Government to reinvest the proceeds from the forthcoming 4G spectrum auction into science and engineering - CaSE and Nesta will be holding a high-profile debate at the IET in London next Tuesday 11th December. See here for further details and to register.
The 4Growth report details how the government could make our proposals a reality. Speaking at the CBI Conference last month, Business Secretary Vince Cable praised the work of the campaign.
Please sign our petition, joining leading figures such as Prof Brian Cox, Lord Martin Rees, Lord William Waldegrave, Andre Geim, and Ben Goldacre - and circulate the details to your colleagues and friends, so that MPs are forced to debate our calls. You can find out more about the campaign here. |

Lord Heseltine delivers Annual Lecture 2012
| | Lord Heseltine, the former Deputy Prime Minister, used the 2012 CaSE Annual Lecture to call for science to help drive the UK's economic growth. He also said that CaSE and Nesta's 4Growth report is "an important and illuminating contribution to the debate on industrial strategy".
The full text of the lecture is available here, and a video recording will be online shortly. The event was hosted at the Science Museum, and kindly sponsored by Airbus and EADS.
This year's lecture was the second time Heseltine spoke for CaSE, with the first being in 1989 when he discussed "Paying for Science" with Save British Science, as we were then known. You can read the text of the 1989 speech here.

Chancellor's support for science
| | CaSE welcomed the Chancellor George Osborne's speech at the Royal Society, in which he highlighted the critical role of science in ensuring economic growth and social wellbeing. The Chancellor also announced an additional £60 million over five years for the UK's commitment to the European Space Agency.
Although welcome, CaSE has warned that such additional spending if set against the backdrop of the £1.7 billion cut in science funding in 2010 and the cuts to capital spending.

Science advice to MPs spared budget cut
| | CaSE organised a recent letter, signed by leading figures from the science and engineering policy community, warning that potential budget cuts to the Parliamentary Office for Science and Technology (POST) threaten the quality of scientific advice in Westminster.
It was feared that POST was facing a cut in its budget of almost a quarter by 2014/15. At a time when many Government departments are making disproportionate cuts to their R&D budgets, the work of POST is more important than ever.
Further to the letter being sent, we have welcomed the news that POST's budget is now secure until 2015.
