Government R&D hit by disproportionate cuts
| |
A new investigation by CaSE has found that Whitehall departments have cut their research and development (R&D) budgets disproportionately - despite suggestions that such spending would be protected.
Our analysis received exclusive coverage in the Financial Times. |

Party Conferences: The science round-up
With the last of the three main party conferences coming to a close this week, CaSE has put together a summary of the big news for science and engineering.
Ahead of the conference, our Director Imran Khan wrote an article comparing the science policies of the Conservatives, Labour, and the Liberal Democrats.
And looking back, CaSE analysed the speeches of the main figures at each conference, to see if our political elite are at least talking science - there were mixed results. |
Conservatives
Chancellor George Osborne used his conference speech to announce an additional £200m for the Research Partnership Investment Fund.
While welcoming the announcement, CaSE responded by arguing that more needs to be done to offset the cuts made to the UK's research base in 2010.
Liberal Democrats
At their party conference, the Liberal Democrats passed a policy motion urging the Government to increase investment in science and research across the UK.
The passing of this motion follows the publication of the Liberal Democrats' new science policy paper , which we've compiled selected highlights of. CaSE had previously sent the Liberal Democrats a science policy wishlist.
Labour
In his conference speech, Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls called for the upcoming 4G auction windfall to fund housing and stamp duty breaks. CaSE has argued that the money could be put to better use by investing in science and engineering, and later this month we will be releasing a joint report with Nesta to outline this argument further.
The Labour Shadow Science and Innovation Minister Chi Onwurah also trailed Labour's five-point plan for its new science policy, at a conference fringe event hosted by the Science Council. We also featured a guest article by Bryony King - a Labour Party delegate and full-time science enthusiast, who gave a speech at conference on the value of funding science.
