ARTS PROFILE: Recology Artist in Residence Program
By Mary Alice Bowie Twenty three years ago, Jo Hanson, a Bay Area environmental artist and activist, had the vision and foresight to suggest an artist in residence program at the "dump" in San Francisco. This groundbreaking idea has been very successful, with over one hundred Recology Artist in Residence alumni! Recology educates and inspires people to think more about overconsumption, and recycling, and is helping raise conciousness about waste, and creativity through re-purposing. Artists are given a stipend, studio space on site at the San Francisco Recology transfer and recycling center, and access to discarded items which can be used and transformed, and made into art! Read more about the program and upcoming events at Recology.

Inspired by Earth Day - Using Re-purposed Materials
Last fall, PAC received a generous donation of fabrics and wool from Fibre Arts Design of Palo Alto. We shared the resources with: Canada College Fashi on Dept., Community School of Music and Arts, Little House, coastal weavers and spinners and Laurel School of Menlo Park. In the spirit of Earth Day, here are the results of how these groups put the materials to use.
Second grade students at Laurel School used the large bolt of canvas to create ocean wall murals and bioluminescent artwork for their annual Art and Science Fair on April 18, 2013. The annual event involves almost 200 parent volunteers who teach hands-on art and science-themed workshops for small groups of kids.
Montara fiber artist Nancy Wilder works with wool and fleece to felt different items. This light fixture is an example of some of her work created from raw wool. More on Nancy Wilder.
