Dear Perspectives Friends and Family,
What a spring it has been! I would like to begin by extending gratitude to those who contributed to the recent success of our Annual Benefit. A special thank you to our co-chairs Eric Johnson, Joe Perillo and Eric Whitaker, in addition to our mistress of ceremonies, Fox News anchor Robin Robinson. Thank you also to our dear friend Tony Anderson, who was the recipient of our first A Disciplined LifeŽ Award, and to those who supported Perspectives by attending the event, serving as Table Ambassadors, or donating to our record-setting live auction. On to more good news!
All of us at Perspectives are extremely proud to announce that we have reached a new milestone as an incredible 98% of our graduating seniors have been accepted to college and been awarded over $10.1 million in scholarships! There will be PCS alumni attending some of our nation's finest institutions including The University of Chicago, University of Illinois, Babson College, Trinity College and Denison University.
There is excitement in the air as staff and students are getting ready for graduation. We have assembled an incredible roster of keynote speakers including Lehigh University professor and MSNBC contributor Dr. James Peterson, former NFL player and educational speaker Cecil Martin, and best-selling author and Walgreens vice president Steve Pemberton.
We are proud of all our scholars and look forward to hearing of their continued success in college and beyond.

Perspectives Annual Benefit:
15 years of A Disciplined LifeŽ
Our Most Successful Event Ever!
|
|
Perspectives Charter Schools celebrated 15 years of A Disciplined LifeŽ at our Annual Benefit on May 9th at the Westin River North in downtown Chicago. We were honored to host more than 400 guests, including many distinguished corporate and civic leaders. This year, we had staff and students serve as Table Ambassadors, mingling with guests and leading lively dinner conversations about which principle of A Disciplined LifeŽ resonated with them the most.

Tony Anderson, an ardent Perspectives supporter and Vice Chair and Midwest Managing Partner of Ernst & Young LLP, was the recipient of our first-ever A Disciplined LifeŽ Award for embodying our 26 ethical principles. In addition to Mr. Anderson's award presentation, highlights of the evening included sharing a letter from President Barack Obama congratulating us on 15 years of excellence, the debut of a ground-breaking video produced by Leo Burnett which exemplified the Perspectives difference, and presentations by Perspectives students and leaders. We were thrilled to see old friends and make many new ones as it truly was a night to remember. To view photos from the event please visit Perspectives 2012 Benefit.

Perspectives Charter Schools' Auburn Gresham campus was honored to host Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, who made an appearance at the school for National Diabetes Screening Week. More than 100 Perspectives students identified as at risk for diabetes were screened in school by volunteer health care providers. The event was a partnership between the Jay Cutler Foundation, Perspectives, the Greater Auburn-Gresham Development Corporation, CVS MinuteClinic, and the University of Illinois Chicago Medical Center.
Mr. Cutler addressed students in the school auditorium, sharing his personal story of living with diabetes and emphasizing the importance of early detection, proper nutrition and exercise. The screenings and an impromptu press conference quickly went viral, with stories appearing everywhere from local newscasts to ESPN. When Mr. Cutler heard that a student had tested positive for diabetes, he voiced his confidence in Perspectives, saying that the student will be fine as the school community is behind him and understands the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. This student and any others who were identified as having diabetes or pre-diabetes will receive follow-up care at no charge from the support of Mr. Cutler's foundation.

In April, our Rodney D. Joslin Campus held Perspectives on Peace Movement 2012: Saving Lives, Encouraging Futures. This "Peace Week" was created in partnership with the parents of Jeff Maldonado, a 2008 Joslin graduate who was shot and killed in the summer of 2009 in a case of mistaken identity. The goal of Peace Week was to give students leadership and conflict resolution skills so that they can become "peace ambassadors" in their own communities. Peace Week activities culminated with a Peace March through the South Loop and a Peace Jam where students shared music and poetry they had written about peace. Students also unveiled a dramatic art installation called "The Fallen". The students created this piece in honor of Jeff and the 258 youth between the ages of one and 19 who have been counted among Chicago's homicide victims since his tragic death. Across our network, in our hallways and in our classrooms we teach our students to be thinking, action-driven scholars who are agents of change. Peace Week was a remarkable example of this work!
