On September 13th we will have our first 10-to-the-City congregational meeting after church. For those new to All Souls, 10-to-the-City is the program in which our church tithes 10% of our annual budget to local community partners. Those community partners are chosen by you - members of All Souls. That meeting will last approximately 30 minutes, and the service itself will be shorter than usual. Parents, we really desire your participation in this conversation. Our childcare volunteers will be keeping the children an extra 30 minutes longer and will plan for you to pick up your children at the conclusion of the meeting, instead of before Eucharist.
To prepare for this meeting, we ask that All Souls members prayerfully consider which community service organizations seek the peace of Knoxville through their work in the following categories (organized around the elements of God's vision of a perfect city set forth in Isaiah 65:17-25): - Youth, Families, and Education (Isaiah 65:23) - Leadership Development (Isaiah 65:17-25) - Housing and Care for the Homeless (Isaiah 65:21) - Justice, Reconciliation, Response to Crisis (Isaiah 65:25) - Public Celebrations, the Arts, Hospitality (Isaiah 65:18-19) - Food (Isaiah 65:22) - Spiritual Renewal (Isaiah 65:24) - Economic Self-Sufficiency and Jobs (Isaiah 65:22-23) At this meeting, each of these categories will have a designated space in the Square Room. Church members will have two blocks of 15 minutes each to go to the top 2 categories that most closely meet their interests and give input into which community partners working in those areas they feel we should support. The After Church Discussion Group for college age and up has been postponed to September 20 due to Labor Day Weekend and Boomsday. PLEASE FORGIVE THE BROKEN LINK that was sent out the last two weeks for Dan Frye's great story on Danny Bullington, and read it here.
Thank you to those of you who serve in our children's ministry! It is a joy to be with our little ones and help them learn about Jesus and his love for them, to hear them sing, and watch them play together. We are in need of just a few more teacher assistants. The commitment is one Sunday a month. Specifically, we need onehelper in the toddler nursery. If you are willing to serve our tiniest members, as an assistant, a teacher, or a substitute helper, please contact Melanie Leach at keepingheart@gmail.com.
August Shepherding Team News:
-
In applying Consensual Orthodoxy, the Shepherding Team realizes that it would be of great benefit to provide tools and methods to the congregation to learn how to disagree well, and the discussion continues on how to do this.
-
Shepherding Team Member Dan Holbrook, a practicing attorney, shared a document on "Legal Hotspots for Churches." One action step that came from that is the development of a Safety Task Force to ensure that we have safeguards in place for our body as we meet together for worship..
- We are optimistic about the upcoming decision process to determine what community ministries should receive monies through our annual tithe, known as 10-to-the-City. Realizing that the process served us well in the first application, the congregation will not be asked to start with a blank slate as before but build on the positive process that has brought us to where we are.

10 to the City
Emerald Youth Foundation is proud to host the national CEO of The Christian Community Development Association (CCDA), Noel Castellanos, for an event to introduce local leaders to church-based community development. This event, including a prayer breakfast and worship service, will be September 19 from 8:30 am - 11:30 am at Emerald Avenue United Methodist Church, 1620 N. Central Street.
