If you would like to put an announcement in the newsletter, whether it's yours or an event that you'd like to share in the city (that takes place downtown), please type up announcements with a few (3-5) sentences that include ALL necessary information (including your contact) in an announcement that I can copy and paste into the newsletter and send to katie@allsoulsknoxville.com. Thanks so much.
A big hooray for Kate Mclean who placed in both the backstroke and the freestyle in the Smoky Mountain Invitational this weekend and will swim in the finals with the Emerald Youth Swim Team...a HUGE win for her and the team.
AND its her Birthday!! Happy 9th birthday to
this bright light and cherished child.

DONT FORGET ABOUT THE CHICKENS! Do you want to raise chickens? Danny Bullington will hold an informational meeting after church on Sunday, August 3rd to answer questions about anything related to raising chickens. He will have material to hand out. If you have any questions, please email Danny at dbulling@utk.edu.

Happy Birthday to this great athlete, coach, encourager, big sister and friend. She has a great story, is a huge fighter, and has an enormous passion to love and empower the children of this city in Emerald Youth and beyond. So glad you were born, Bryden Banister.
Keep on shining.

I really like this experience of Deb Scaperoth's with women at KARM last week that she allowed me to share:

Last Friday four women friends and I took a trolley from Knox Area Rescue Ministries to Subway on market square.

"So?", you may be asking yourself.

Well, what was remarkable is that the women, who are clients and residents at the shelter, formed a tight, vigilant circle around me as we walked beneath the underpass to get to the trolley. (That underpass is marred with graffiti and gang symbols and is often populated by more dangerous members of the homeless community.)  I was perplexed by their actions, and asked them about it, and they turned and said, "Well, we don't want you to get hurt, Deb".

Their sheltering actions towards me in that one experience
in one of the more threatening areas of Knoxville has to rank up there with one of the kindest things anyone has ever done. I wasn't afraid. They just took it on themselves to protect me, acting on what they know from being on the streets. I was deeply touched.

I got to hang out a bit last week with Pierce Lamacchia, who owns KBrew, a popular neighborhood coffee shop on the corner of Broadway and Glenwood. They are celebrating their nine month opening, and are already wildly successful. They are adding more food to their inventory and have recently come out with New York Style bagels, baked fresh from Hot Bagel. Check out their clever stories and photos on Facebook, or just head on down there for an everything bagel and an Almond Latte, and you'll probably see somebody you know. I like Pierce's vision because he has a passion for great business, but he can't go long without talking about how he wants to use this business to improve the community around him and bring people together for good. Go Pierce. ALSO! Look at how great his teeth are!! He and his lady friend (Carrie Jo Pinckard) are the most dentally-compatible couple I've ever seen!!

The All Souls Medical Fund will be accepting application for this quarter from now through August 15. If you have medical, behavioral, or dental needs not covered by insurance or you have no insurance you can apply. This is a matching fund and the details are attached in the link below. Turn in or email applications to Brad Carter (bradcart@lycos.com), Ginger Kielarowski (kfam502@comcast.net), or to Jill (jill@allsoulsknoxville.com) in the church office this quarter. We ask that you submit supporting documents such as bills, payments and insurance coverage statements with the application.

I can't say enough good things about the Wordplayer's production of the Secret Garden at the Bijou last weekend. Noelle Harb was incredible, playing the character of the Ayah (an Indian nursemaid) but had a role that was much more indicative of a creative personification of the Holy Spirit, and it was quite powerful. This story is a great illustration of the healing power of God's natural beauty as well the deep curative benefits of family and forgiveness. If you've not had a chance to read Frances Hodgson Burnett's marvelous story, it's worth your time. I sat down recently with Melanie Leach and talked the gift of story in our spiritual lives and what her experience was with being on the team of directors that made this story come to life. She has unique perspective on using narratives such as these to understand God's movements in our lives, and again, she is an excellent one to connect with.
Thank you for the wonderful journey, Wordplayers.

I always know if I am looking for grace, Mary Butler is a tender soul that communicates this so well. I love the thoughts she shared from Richard Rohr on surrender:

To Western or comfortable people, surrender and letting go sounds like losing. But it's actually accessing a deeper, broader sense of the self, which is already whole, already filled with abundant life. This is the part of you that had always loved God and said 'yes' to God. It's the part of you that is Love, and all we have to do is let go and fall into it. It's already there. --Richard Rohr

All of these three ladies either have been or are currently involved at All Souls in women's groups and in the prayer community particularly relating to Recovery and 12-Step work, and have mentored many young women in our community. My experiences with these women and with people who have walked with me in Recovery have been absolutely life-changing. It was a privilege and joy to be present today as Lynn Castle got her 20 year sobriety chip.
Thank you, Judy Pate, Lynn Castle and Janie Howard.

A great place to serve! The medical fund team is needing one or two new members for the team. If you know a member in our body who we should consider or would like to be considered yourself, let any of the medical fund team members know. The team meets quarterly to review applications and policy. The work involves review of paperwork, making phone calls, and followup contact work. We are looking for people in the body who have a calling for outreach to our own body and are willing spend time in prayerful consideration on medial funding decisions in a confidential manner. Email Brad Carter (bradcart@lycos.com) or Ginger Kielarowski (kfam502@comcast.net).

From Mary Butler: "Shiloh and Jaden Janowick, our grandkids, are now home safely with their Mama in Knoxville. We made lifetime memories with them, and they have truly become world citizens, loving and embracing diverse peoples and cultures of the world."
Here are Mary and Jaden, after just getting beautiful henna painted on their hands in their trip to Morocco.

I love this photo and the recent update Jana Morgan shared about Arwen:
Today baby girl tripped and fell (while chasing a puppy, of course). After a good cry and with blood still gushing down her face, she jumped up and ran toward the
playground like nothing had happened. Brave and independent.
(She is now sleeping with a giant bandaid across her forehead.)

Meghan Davis and I took a glorious road trip this week to Atlanta to check out the National Center for Civil and Human Rights. The center, nine years in the making, was incredibly well done. It had a strong emphasis on the American Civil Rights movement, but also had large and powerful displays on global issues, as well as a look at how injustice is perpetuated in our culture and ideas for how we can use technology and social media to take a stand for dignity and human rights. Tickets are $15 unless you're a student, but it's in a great part of town and is a fairly easy drive. With our focus on Social Justice and the many opportunities that surround us in this city, its a fun and very relevant way to spend a day, learn a lot, and come back charged up. Meghan Davis is an excellent museum buddy and friend, and is one of the funniest people I know. We can also talk to you for hours about the social paradox that is Beyonce, but you will probably
hate us at the end.

Taylor and Allison Yoakley have housing available, Please contact Taylor at 865-719-0364 or tyoakley@sharptop.younglife.org. Thank you!!

Louie needs a home!  Louie is a 10 year old male Shih Tzu who thinks he is a human.  He is happy when he is around "his people".  He has been with our family since he was 6 weeks old and sadly, due to moves and lifestyle changes, he must now go to live with someone else who will love him well.  If you love canine companionship and have a spot in your heart and home for Louie, please contact Linda Hamilton through email at lmrhamilton@gmail.com or cell phone at 865-223-1773. Thank you!

Another one from the #AudaciousToddler series:
Josiah York tearing it up at Jump Jam. Brave, limber little man.
Lauren Wolford is a member of All Souls, and is looking to Nanny for a family starting in the middle or end of August. She is available Monday-Friday during the day. She had several years experience working with children. She can be reached at 276-620-6885 or laurenwolford@gmail.com. Thank you!

knoxvillecommunityCommunity Involvement

All Souls does not take formal positions on doctrinal or ethical positions outside of the Creed. We do, however, support our people as they, under the authority of scripture, in prayer and through community, discern the way of Christ in our world. Following Augustine, we believe in essentials, unity, in non-essentials, charity and in all things love.  We celebrate all the diverse ways our members  follow Christ in the world, even when we disagree with one another. Announcements in the update reflect the many ways our people are serving God in our community. They do not reflect All Souls' endorsement of a particular issue, doctrinal position, or cause.

Emerald Youth Swim Team makes it to the finals for the FIRST TIME as a team and knocked it out of the park at the Smoky Mountain Invitational this weekend! Congratulations to all these
swimming stars and their terrific coaches!!

The Emerald Youth Foundation is looking to fill AmeriCorp positions for the 2014-2015 school year!

These AmeriCorp would serve in an urban neighborhood part-time in support of a structured after-school or evening program with elementary, middle or high school age young people. A living allowance will be received while you serve and an education award given after you successfully complete the term.

You can contact Sam Gosey, a member of our Body who works for Emerald, if you have questions about this opportunity! (samgosey@gmail.com) Or go here for more information or to apply.

Got to share some Mexican food this weekend with Michael and Jennifer Wood, some of my most favorite humans. I learn from them all the time and they cheer me on and they show me how to follow God in ways that take me to entirely new places. If you don't know these people, they are wonderful. Come to prayer on Monday nights at 6 to soak in the teaching or wednesday mornings at 8:30 in the chapel, and one of them will probably be there. Mark and Danny and Tim are still doing great teaching on Exodus on Monday nights.
Come and learn how to be still and watch God fight for you.

All Souls offers several classes for children during our Sunday evening service on the third floor.  There is a nursery for babies under the age of one and two classes for 1 to 2-year olds that meets during the whole service on the third floor. Children between the ages of 3 and 11 stay for the first part of the service and then come upstairs for a time of Bible stories, songs and fun. Contact Melanie Leach at 865-705-9482 or keepingheart@gmail.com.

The Soul Mammas: If you are a mom with a young baby interested in hanging out with other moms and their babies you should come hang with the Soul Mammas.
We meet Mondays at noon at varying locations.  We talk about mom stuff, spiritual stuff, and have a desire to grow in prayer together.  Please email/text Sarah Whisman at yankeevol82@ gmail.com or 865-385-1482 if interested!

Adam Brimer is one of my favorite photographers. He took this photo of the storm tonight and earlier this month also had one of his photos appear on the CNN 50 States/ 50 Spots page (which is beautiful). Click on "Tennessee" in the drop down link and see Adam's lovely shot of Cade's Cove. This is a visually stunning page that really celebrates God's natural beauty and makes me think of the Secret Garden message and the vitality that comes from enjoying the gift of His creation. The description on the CNN page reads "As the United States goes on vacation, CNN is showcasing a natural wonder in each of the 50 states. Some are world-renowned and undeniably spectacular, while others are less-discovered gems. Each of our favorite spots, in its way, helps define its home state." Check out Adam's work here, and see God's majestic handiwork all over the country.

If you are a guy over 50 (or close to) and attend All Souls, we'd love for you to come to lunch with us at Fridays in the library at 4 Market Square on the 3rd Floor. Bring your own sack lunch. Email Doug at doug@allsoulsknoxville.com if you can come.
If you are a mom/dad with a crying or rambunctious child, we now have a TV in the prayer chapel that streams the service so you don't have to miss anything. If you are a dad, you can do the same as long as no one is nursing.

If you would like for the church to send you out with prayer during the worship service if you're moving or going on a mission trip contact Jesse at jesse@allsoulsknoxville.com.
