If you would like to put an announcement in the newsletter, whether it's yours or an event that you'd like to share in the city (that takes place downtown), please type up announcements with a few (3-5) sentences that include ALL necessary information (including your contact) in an announcement that I can copy and paste into the newsletter and send to katie@allsoulsknoxville.com. Thanks so much!

Glad you're taking over, my friend. Congratulations Jill Branson,
how blessed we are to have you.

The Shepherding Team empowered the Personnel Committee to begin a process of hiring a new office manager/financial coordinator for the church.  After a thorough application and interview process led by Ray Kielarowski, with the support of the Shepherding Team, the Personnel Team has hired Jill Branson to serve this role.  She will be handling the church administrative and organizational responsibilities, play an essential supportive role for the Shepherding Team and Senior Pastor, and serve as a communications "switchboard" for the church body.  We are excited about this hire and happy to have Jill on board.

Spiritual Disciplines Teachings

All Souls cherishes the ancient practices of the church. In an effort to catalogue and teach many of these practices, we hope to make the teachings easily available in bite-sized chunks. The first of these efforts was our Psalm Writing discipline during Lent (Susanne Hassell and Doug Banister taught on it on March 9, 2014. Listen here ). The entire Psalms of Lament series continued to develop how the Hebrew writers used this practice that we can use today. Our second effort centers on breath prayers, aligning the routine of our breathing with prayers to our Loving God.

This summer in Sunday School the children will be studying the Lord's Prayer.  We will learn the Lord's Prayer song from the Rain for Roots Cd called "The Kingdom of Heaven is Like This".  We will also learn a couple of other songs from this cd over the coming months, so if you would like to order or download it for your family, it can be found at rainforroots.bandcamp.com.

Check out the newest adventure from the Kelly family in Spain.

Happy Birthday Mary Baldridge!

Starting June 1st, the baby nursery will be moving next door to the current nursery. Email Melanie Leach for questions at keepingheart@gmail.com

Do you have an opportunity that a small fund will advance your efforts to seek the peace in the city?  Perhaps an All Souls grant, up to $500, could help.  Download Application here and submit to Marie Alcorn.

knoxvillecommunityCommunity Involvement

All Souls does not take formal positions on doctrinal or ethical positions outside of the Creed. We do, however, support our people as they, under the authority of scripture, in prayer and through community, discern the way of Christ in our world. Following Augustine, we believe in essentials, unity, in non-essentials, charity and in all things love.  We celebrate all the diverse ways our members  follow Christ in the world, even when we disagree with one another. Announcements in the update reflect the many ways our people are serving God in our community. They do not reflect All Souls' endorsement of a particular issue, doctrinal position, or cause.

Happy Birthday Meghan Davis!

All Souls offers several classes for children during our Sunday evening service on the third floor.  There is a nursery for babies under the age of one and a class for 1 to 2-year olds that meets during the whole service on the third floor. Children between the ages of 3 and 11 stay for the first part of the service and then come upstairs for a time of Bible stories, songs and fun. Contact Melanie Leach at 865-705-9482 or keepingheart@gmail.com.

The Soul Mammas: If you are a mom with a young baby interested in hanging out with other moms and their babies you should come hang with the Soul Mammas.
We meet Mondays at noon at varying locations.  We talk about mom stuff, spiritual stuff, and have a desire to grow in prayer together.  Please email/text Sarah Whisman at yankeevol82@ gmail.com or 865-385-1482 if interested!

If you are a guy over 50 (or close to) and attend All Souls, we'd love for you to come to lunch with us at Fridays in the library at 4 Market Square on the 3rd Floor. Bring your own sack lunch. Email Doug at doug@allsoulsknoxville.com if you can come.

If you are a mom/dad with a crying or rambunctious child, we now have a TV in the prayer chapel that streams the service so you don't have to miss anything. If you are a dad, you can do the same as long as no one is nursing.

If you would like for the church to send you out with prayer during the worship service if you're moving or going on a mission trip contact Jesse at jesse@allsoulsknoxville.com.

Summer

is great for vacations, a time to rest and refresh, usually in an environment or setting different from our work-a-day world. At their best, these times carry elements of sabbatical and reflection.

The Tennessee Smokies Baseball team markets their games as "a nine inning vacation," a chance to kick back and enjoy the best game on the planet played with exceptional skill by professionals-some of whom will be Major League stars in a few years.    Yes, I'm unashamedly biased toward baseball!

In a similar vein, a lot of the entertainment we bring to the Square Room at Cafe4 is purposed to provide a mini-vacation of sorts, a respite in which to enjoy both emerging and accomplished artists and also push pause and get recalibrated at the intersection of art and life.

Sometimes the recharge happens as we get lost in the metaphors and melodies of a master singer-songwriter like David Wilcox (www.davidwilcox.com) an experienced pro who will weave narrative and music through the course of an evening like no other on May 22.

Sometimes re-orientation occurs in the Square Room through a provocative work like Princess Cut, a locally written theatrical production that premiers May 30, and will tell the disturbing yet hopeful story of a girl once enslaved in a sex traffic ring here in Knoxville.

Or perhaps that moment of clarity will come in the context of an up-close and personal performance of a favorite song from a homegrown talent like Dave Barnes on July 24 (www.davebarnes.com) or the soulful execution of a Grammy winning artist like Knoxville's own Ashley Cleveland (www.ashleycleveland.com
) on August 28.

Or maybe, that new found sense of perspective will accrue to you over a meal in the Square Room's 'dinner theatre' production of Neil Simon's classic "Barefoot in the Park," on August 7-8.

Whatever it is and wherever it might be, my hope is that one way or another you'd find a way-and the arts are a great way-to slow yourself down this summer and be reminded of what is most important. For a full calendar of events in the Square Room at Cafe4, please visit www.thesquareroom.com.And don't forget to hit the refresh button.
