Advent is a quiet time of waiting and keeping vigil.  It is also one of the busiest times of the year, the time for endless hours of shopping and planning the Christmas festivities.  There is great contrast between the two, therefore Christians who wish to take Advent and Christmas to heart are called to make serious choices.  Instead of wandering around the mall, from shop to shop, the Christian is asked to take time for quiet reflection and reading, and to remain watchful in prayer, eagerly awaiting the coming of the Savior.  Humbly but earnestly, filled with faith and confidence, we await the coming of Christ.  Deep within us, we hold on to the conviction that his arrival shall bring true peace to the world, the sort of peace that surpasses all human understanding."  (page 27 from "A Monastery Journey to Christmas)
Come quiet your heart and keep vigil with us, as we wait for Christ's coming.  Advent Vigil Services will be held every Sunday in December leading up to Christmas, at 8 p.m.in the chapel starting THIS Sunday, december 1st.

Please keep Laurens Tullock and family in your prayers as his mother, Helen Tullock, suffered a massive stroke Friday morning. They ask for prayers for faith and trust in God's will and in feeling His presence, wisdom to make the right decisions, and for family members staying with Mrs. Tullock in the hospital. Many thanks.

"Waiting on God" Advent Retreat

Saturday, Dec. 7, 9am-3pm, 8420 Nubbin Ridge Rd

"I wait for GOD, my soul waits, and in God's word I hope..." (Ps. 130:5)

Advent is a time of waiting, of preparation for the coming of the Messiah. We are all called to wait for God on our faith journey, experiencing these

Gifts of Waiting: Patience, Gratitude, Compassion, Humility, Trust in God, Loss of control, Living in the present.

There will be times of worship with reflective Bible reading, music, and small group sharing, but most of the day is reserved for you to spend alone in directed meditation exploring "What does it mean that Jesus Emmanuel is 'with me'?" and "How can I wait for and experience Jesus' presence during Advent in practical ways?"

The Holiday Store is a unique program through The Volunteer Ministry Center for individuals who are living in poverty to do community service work in order to  earn points which can be used to purchase gifts for their families. This approach leaves the parent knowing that they worked for the gift and allows the feelings of guilt or shame of being a poor provider (that often come along with charity giving), to be avoided. This approach allows folks to give their families gifts while maintaining their dignity.

VMC is collecting new items (no used) to stock the store for the holiday season. The holiday store will open on December 2nd and will be open until the 22nd. I'm attaching the list of items requested and it is also posted here on VMC's facebook page. Donations can be dropped off at VMC M-F from 8-5 or can be given to Caroline Smith at church and she will take them to VMC.
