News from the Shepherding Team

At the October Shepherding Team meeting, the highlight was the approval of a plan to renovate the All Souls Chapel using funds designated for that purpose and given as a memorial for Mary Tarwater. Interior designer Molly Bland, a close friend of Mary's, volunteered her services to oversee the Chapel redesign project, and a team consisting of Jennifer Wood (who focused on gathering input from user groups), Katie Norrell (photo project), Bobby Whisman (construction of "ancient" prayer corner elements), and Jesse Watkins (sound system) have been assisting. Furniture and accessories are currently being ordered and work should begin before the end of the year. Because the Chapel serves as both an All Souls "family" meeting and community room, and as a group and private prayer Chapel, the approved design blends elements of each.

Happy 60th Birthday Laurens Tullock!

In the business portion of the meeting, the Shepherding Team recognized the tremendous work provided over the years by Lynn Charles in leading the Children's Ministry at All Souls. Now that Lynn is stepping back, a process to fill a part time position of Director of Christian Education has moved forward and the Personnel Committee has recommended and the Shepherding Team has approved Melanie Leach for that position. Melanie and Lynn are currently transitioning the responsibilities. The Nominations Committee continues their work toward nominating at least three positions for new three year terms to the Shepherding Team starting in 2014.

Ministry actions included a decision to reconvene the 10 to the City Committee to review the impact of the ministry gifts made for 2013 out of the All Souls' tithe to the City, and to determine the process for making decisions on ministry gifts for 2014. In addition, approval was given to Ron Wollard to start a Crown Financial Ministry class at All Souls to teach financial planning from a Biblical model (any needed scholarships for the class will be approved out of the benevolence fund).

The major discussion item for the month concerned ongoing confusion about how our adherence to a doctrine of consensual orthodoxy impacts decisions on how to deal with known sin in the body; and impacts decisions on various requests we get to take positions on sin in the world, to sanction ministry initiatives, and to provide

Happy (almost but not quite 60th) Birthday Doug!

Church generated communications that have the potential to affect how we are perceived in the community we are trying to reach. Since this has been an area of debate and ad hoc decision making within every Shepherding Team since All Souls' founding, the decision was made to secure a professional neutral facilitator for a process to help the Shepherds develop an agreed upon written statement on how to address such issues in the future. The process will be timed to coincide with the orientation of new Shepherding Team members so that they are also included in the ultimate decision on how to address these issues.

Alternative Folk Artist based out of Knoxville.

Kyle Adem is a tireless storyteller with a whole lot of questions. His approach to music is not only a passionate homage to the pain/confusion/beauty of life, but also a deliberate communal experience for everyone to enjoy. Drawing from diverse legends like Johnny Cash and Lou Reed, as well as modern indie rockers The Mountain Goats, Adem marries his own blend of orchestral and reflective folk, with a punk edginess.

Bill Lee Clay

(from Kenny Woodhull) Many good things are going on in the area of missional arts through the work of New City Resources in Knoxville.  For now, I'd like to highlight a partnership and some special offerings that promise to uniquely engage and inspire at the intersection of art, faith, and culture.

Where our partnership with the Square Room at Cafe4 (www.squareroom.com) is concerned, we are pleased to announce an eclectic menu of musical and theatrical programming.  In October, for example, we will host hometown musical favorites Elenowen(aka Josh Johnson and wife, Nicole) in an appearance with Green River Ordinance (October 11), three-time Grammy Winner (and Bearden High School Graduate),  Ashley Cleveland (October 18), and critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Pierce Pettis (October 24), a songwriter whose credits include material covered by Joan Baez.

In terms of drama in the Square Room in October, we will present a scene from The WordPlayers' production of "Doubt" (October 9), an exceptionally thought-provoking work that explores human trust and religious faith within the challenging framework of child abuse.  As well, in the context of a lunch-time speaker series that includes Sam Venable (September) and Jack Neely (November),  TV-Radio personality Hallerin Hilton Hill will bring to the Square Room "Words of Wisdom" (October 16), a program of music and musings based on the teachings of King Solomon.
