We have two wonderful girls, Allie Eber and Carolyn Carpenter, who are in a terrible living situation with their home in Old North Knoxville. There is a rat infestation and other dangerous conditions and they are now being forced to pay rent twice just so they can have a safe place to live. If there is anyone who has had experience with this or has a connection with legal services relating to these matters, please email them at clcarpenter92@yahoo.com. Thank you!

Ladies group: After a wonderful summer and potlucks and visits, we will be moving into our fall semester routine at Cathy Gonzales's house (1317 Hannah Ave. Knoxville Tn 37921 in Mechanicsville). We will meet from 6:30-8:30 on Tuesdays throughout the fall. We will be using the time to press deeper into spiritual disciplines and prayer for one another this semester. Our time each week will begin with our usual snacks and visiting, and then we will move into our more structured time. On September 17th, we will talk about some group business,  set the tone for our fall, and close out with prayer. I am really looking forward to seeing everyone again. Please begin praying for our group and our time as you are led. We cannot have enough prayer coverage as we seek each other's hearts and His will.

Kyle Adem

House Show:  KYLE ADEM

The SHAREhouse (just behind 1640 Jefferson Ave. in the Historic Parkridge neighborhood)

Alternative Folk Artist based out of Knoxville.
$5-10 suggested min. donation per person.
100% goes to the artist.

Kyle Adem is a tireless storyteller with a whole lot of questions. His approach to music is not only a passionate homage to the pain/confusion/beauty of life, but also a deliberate communal experience for everyone to enjoy. Drawing from diverse legends like Johnny Cash and Lou Reed, as well as modern indie rockers The Mountain Goats, Adem marries his own blend of orchestral and reflective folk, with a punk edginess.

(from Kenny Woodhull) Many good things are going on in the area of missional arts through the work of New City Resources in Knoxville.  For now, I'd like to highlight a partnership and some special offerings that promise to uniquely engage and inspire at the intersection of art, faith, and culture.

Where our partnership with the Square Room at Cafe4 (www.squareroom.com) is concerned, we are pleased to announce an eclectic menu of musical and theatrical programming.  In October, for example, we will host hometown musical favorites Elenowen(aka Josh Johnson and wife, Nicole) in an appearance with Green River Ordinance (October 11), three-time Grammy Winner (and Bearden High School Graduate),  Ashley Cleveland (October 18), and critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Pierce Pettis (October 24), a songwriter whose credits include material covered by Joan Baez.

In terms of drama in the Square Room in October, we will present a scene from The WordPlayers' production of "Doubt" (October 9), an exceptionally thought-provoking work that explores human trust and religious faith within the challenging framework of child abuse.  As well, in the context of a lunch-time speaker series that includes Sam Venable (September) and Jack Neely (November),  TV-Radio personality Hallerin Hilton Hill will bring to the Square Room "Words of Wisdom" (October 16), a program of music and musings based on the teachings of King Solomon.

Ashley Addair's work will appear in Ossuary at the UT Downtown Gallery until October 26th

EXHIBITION DATES

October 4 - October 26, 2013

Three hundred artists have contributed to this Ossuary. Their work, in many media, includes single bones, clusters of bones, and art works inspired by, using, or playing with the idea of bones. These bones are political statements and personal elegies, memorials to individuals and statements about mortality. They represent connections to our ancestors and/or to our descendants. Some works are serious and some use bones in a completely playful manner.

Ossuary was developed in response to the repositories of bones that have accured in countries like Cambodia and Rwanda, but Ossuary is not a project about those traumas. Rather, Ossuary offers a poignant counter-image to mass violence. it is a project about the hope that art brings.

Images and statements for all the bone works from this iteration can be found online atwww.ossuaries.net.

The UT Downtown Gallery is located at 106 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville and open from 11am to 6pm, Wednesdays through Friday and 10am to 3pm on Saturdays.
