Global SEEDS Work Day Saturday July 27
A few weeks ago many of you heard Dan Butler give an update about 10 to the City and how we, as a body, are helping Global SEEDS in their work with refugees in the city. Here is an opportunity to be more involved with Global SEEDS. On Saturday July 27, we are having a work day at 617 Deery Street, the Global SEEDS office. There will be various carpentry projects and some handyman type projects. We need skilled workers, helpers, encouragers and others who want to pitch in. We have other things going on too. We will get started about 9 and go to 3ish. Come all day or for a little while.
Contact Roy Payne at 423-316-0439 with questions or email him at rpayne@globalseeds.org

| Paul Hassell with the Climb for Captives |
Praise God for a wonderful and successful journey to the top of Mount Rainier for Paul Hassell and the Climb for Captives team. Here is an update from Paul:
Amazing! We put 9 of 14 of our team on the summit. It was the clearest and best climbing day of the entire season on Rainier. All returned to the bottom together and in good health. On the fundraising end, folks contributed beyond our goal, so we set a new goal, and then even that goal ($75k) was exceeded. Super thankful! There will be much to share. But the team went into recoop and reconnect with families mode. As for Nora and I, we are capitalizing on being on the Pacific coast. Not returning home till July 23rd.
NEWS FROM THE SHEPHERDING TEAM
Two years ago we took a step of faith as a congregation and decided to give 10% of our annual budget to ministries in the city. A year later, you gave so generously that we had enough to accomplish this tithe to the City with some one-time funds left over. The Shepherding Team has spent quite a bit of time this year praying about and discussing how God might want us to use these extra funds as good stewards of His grace.
We considered having another congregational discernment process like we did with 10 to the City last Fall, but since we had just finished one and since these were one time funds we did not think that was the right direction to take. As we prayed, it became clear to us that "our core business is family". So we asked ourselves, how can we use the extra funds to strengthen what matters most to us?
Our first step was to send a team of six members of our Congregation to the School for Spiritual Direction in North Carolina. The members that went were Jill Branson, Susanne Hassel, Rebecca Loy, Buddy and Kathie Odom, and Doug Banister. We were particularly interested in this one week training program because it has been developed and is led by nationally respected author and teacher, Dr. Larry Crabb. The purpose of the School is perfectly aligned with what we mean when we say family as summed up in this Larry Crabb quote:
"A real Church aims toward spiritual community, where souls connect, where shame weakens, where sin surfaces, where failure meets grace, where irritation softens, where holy desire grows."
As a next step in strengthening this family, the Shepherding Team decided to contract with Buddy Odom of Echo Resources for the next 5 months to scout out ways within the Congregation that we can connect in a more intentional and relational way. Buddy is uniquely qualified for this short term assignment - for 10 years through Echo Resources, Buddy has been providing spiritual direction, mentoring, coaching, and leadership development for Knoxville-area pastors and Church leaders. He is in close relationship with, and has received a great deal of training and mentoring over the years from Dr. Crabb.
As a third investment in strengthening our family, we plan to send even more of our members to the School for Spiritual Direction starting next Spring.
We believe that these short term investments will help serve as a catalyst toward building a more mature and connected culture of Christ-centered community. For those of you wanting to know more about the background of our approach or the specifics of the engagement with Buddy, we urge you to talk with Laurens Tullock or any other member of the Shepherding Team or review the following documents that are linked to the Newsletter this week:
