There will be a pizza dinner next Sunday (July 21) after the service. If you would like to bring a fruit or vegetable finger food (we won't be having utensils) please do so! Pizza and drinks provided. Bring a few dollars to contribute toward the cost.

Hello friends! Please don't text the church, as we dont have a texting plan :) Calling or email works best. Thank you!!

Check out Terry Shaw's News-Sentinel article on the community mural project at the I-40 underpass near Glenwood ave. The article features the winsome words of our own Steve Loy, and is a wonderful picture of communities coming together to bring beauty and unity to an otherwise dingy area of Knoxville. Well done, guys!

Update on Chelsea Tolliver: Surgery went well, and Chelsea is in Maryland with her parents recuperating. She'll have blood work on Friday and have staples removed on Monday. Thank you all for the prayers and correspondence.

Please pray for Paul Hassell this weekend as he climbs Mt. Rainier with Climb for Captives. Getting to the summit of Mt. Rainier is an enormous feat, but he is also banding together with a group of guys to raise money and awareness to rescue women and children from slavery. For each climb they partner with a non-profit that is working to bring freedom to victims of human trafficking and they give them 100% of the money we raise so that they can rescue as many as possible. Please pray for our boy; for his heart, mind, body and spirit, and for protection. So proud of Paul.

Check out more info on Climb for Captives

Please continue to pray for the Emerald Youth Foundation Swim Team, as they have had some difficulties this season, and of course the tragic loss of the mother of four of the kids on the swim team. Several members of our congregation are involved with the team. Thank you so much!

NEWS FROM THE SHEPHERDING TEAM

Two years ago we took a step of faith as a congregation and decided to give 10% of our annual budget to ministries in the city.  A year later, you gave so generously that we had enough to accomplish this tithe to the City with some one-time funds left over.  The Shepherding Team has spent quite a bit of time this year praying about and discussing how God might want us to use these extra funds as good stewards of His grace.

We considered having another congregational discernment process like we did with 10 to the City last Fall, but since we had just finished one and since these were one time funds we did not think that was the right direction to take. As we prayed, it became clear to us that "our core business is family".  So we asked ourselves, how can we use the extra funds to strengthen what matters most to us?

Our first step was to send a team of six members of our Congregation to the School for Spiritual Direction in North Carolina.   The members that went were Jill Branson, Susanne Hassel, Rebecca Loy, Buddy and Kathie Odom, and Doug Banister. We were particularly interested in this one week training program because it has been developed and is led by nationally respected author and teacher, Dr. Larry Crabb. The purpose of the School is perfectly aligned with what we mean when we say family as summed up in this Larry Crabb quote:

"A real Church aims toward spiritual community, where souls connect, where shame weakens, where sin surfaces, where failure meets grace, where irritation softens, where holy desire grows."

As a next step in strengthening this family, the Shepherding Team decided to contract with Buddy Odom of Echo Resources for the next 5 months to scout out ways within the Congregation that we can connect in a more intentional and relational way.  Buddy is uniquely qualified for this short term assignment - for 10 years through Echo Resources, Buddy has been providing spiritual direction, mentoring, coaching, and leadership development for Knoxville-area pastors and Church leaders.    He is in close relationship with, and has received a great deal of training and mentoring over the years from Dr. Crabb.

As a third investment in strengthening our family, we plan to send even more of our members to the School for Spiritual Direction starting next Spring.

We believe that these short term investments will help serve as a catalyst toward building a more mature and connected culture of Christ-centered community.   For those of you wanting to know more about the background of our approach or the specifics of the engagement with Buddy, we urge you to talk with Laurens Tullock or any other member of the Shepherding Team or review the following documents that are linked to the Newsletter this week:

1.      Minutes of the June 4, 2013 Shepherding Team Meeting, particularly focusing on the attachment entitled "Proposed Community Catalyst Contract" which summarizes two months of Shepherding Team discernment leading up to the June 4 Shepherding Team meeting with Buddy Odom.

Invitation to the Worship Design Team Meeting
I invite you to join our new Worship Design Team to discuss our services. It celebrates, shapes, and designs how liturgy, music, and art interplay with our busy lives to try to rejuvenate us toward love and good works. The discussions are both philosophical (what are we trying to achieve on a Sunday night?) and practical (is the temperature too low?). It's open to you if you would like to design sacred space.
This month, we meet on Wednesday, July 17, from 6:30-8:30pm in the 3rd floor Chapel at 4 Market Square. --Jesse (jesse@allsoulsknoxville.com)

Please keep Chelsea Tolliver in your prayers, as she travels with her parents, Johnny and Janey to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Maryland where she will have brain surgery on July 5th.

Seasoned Gentlemen - The Friday lunch is BACK ON on July 12th after a brief respite.

Mary Baldridge will be offering a course which will examine both pilgrimage and mysticism and will take the participant on a mystical and physical pilgrimage - body, soul, and spirit - toward a closer connection with God, through reading, walking, prayer and contemplation. The pilgrimage component will consist of a virtual pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago.  Participants will be encouraged to walk daily (and intentionally) and to complete certain virtual "stages" of the Camino de Santiago by achieving certain distance goals.  By the end of the course, participants who have stayed on target will receive a virtual "Compostela" (certificate acknowledging that they have completed their virtual Camino). However, the journey does not stop with the physical because pilgrimage is not primarily a physical journey.  The pilgrim/mystic will also learn about mysticism, from its origins and history in Christianity to the methods that have been used by mystics to open themselves to connection with God.  The ultimate goal will be for participants to take a contemplative pilgrimage, through prayer and meditation, toward a closer connection with God and with the Holy Spirit that resides in him/her as a Christian.  Those who are interested should contact Mary at:
mbaldridge@cn.edu.
Dates:  every Thursday night, July 11-August 15, 6:30-8:00 p.m.
Location: 4 Market Square on the 3rd floor (Room is to be Determined)
