Mt. Zion Baptist Choir

Doug will be preaching at Mt. Zion Baptist Church for the 22nd anniversary of the Pastor, Dr. Johnnie Skinner, on June 23rd at 10:30am.
The church is located at 2714 Brooks Avenue, Knoxville, TN 37914. Dr. Skinner invites All Souls to come and worship and celebrate with Mt. Zion on the 23rd. Mount Zion is Knoxville's oldest African-American church, and has been open since 1860.  Dr. Skinner came with an inward drive to promote the qualities of self-esteem, self-worth, pride, and love for the black family. Among the many programs and activities he has promoted are the Male Mentorship Program for young African-American males; the ordination and installation of the first African-American female Associate Minister of Mount Zion; and all African American Sunday, when all African-Americans are given an opportunity to rekindle their African heritage by coming to worship service in ethnic, African clothing, and church retreats.

Mary Baldridge will be offering a course which will examine both pilgrimage and mysticism and will take the participant on a mystical and physical pilgrimage - body, soul, and spirit
- toward a closer connection with God, through reading, walking, prayer and contemplation.
The pilgrimage component will consist of a virtual pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago.  Participants will be encouraged to walk daily (and intentionally) and to complete certain virtual "stages" of the Camino de Santiago by achieving certain distance goals.  By the end of the course, participants who have stayed on target will receive a virtual "Compostela" (certificate acknowledging that they have completed their virtual Camino). However, the journey does not stop with the physical because pilgrimage is not primarily a physical journey.  The pilgrim/mystic will also learn about mysticism, from its origins and history in Christianity to the methods that have been used by mystics to open themselves to connection with God.  The ultimate goal will be for participants to take a contemplative pilgrimage, through prayer and meditation, toward a closer connection with God and with the Holy Spirit that resides in him/her as a Christian.  Those who are interested should contact Mary at:
mbaldridge@cn.edu.

Dates:  every Thursday night, July 11-August 15, 6:30-8:00 p.m.
Location: 4 Market Square on the 3rd floor (Room is to be Determined)

Please keep in your prayers:
Mark, Kelly, and Joshua Bryant, as Joshua is recovering from surgery.
From Kelly:

Our little man is doing super well adjusting into the Bryant family and getting into the swing of life in America.  We are amazed how well he has bonded with us and how resilient he is.  We definitely feel the steepness of the learning curve with parenting and have never been so tired in our lives, but Joshua is our delight and joy!

Attached are a few recent photos. He makes us smile!

Mark and I would be most grateful for your prayers this coming week.  Tuesday (6/11) early morning, Joshua will have surgery to sew together his cleft palate (3 layers of muscle/tissue/skin).  This is his second surgery (his first was his cleft lip repair done in China) in a series of approximately 5 total that he will undergo during his childhood.  He will have another one next summer at age 3, and then a bone graft around age 9, and once his face reaches maturity, he will have his final repair/revision around 16-18 yrs of age.     Here is a page that describes the surgery and cleft related issues  http://kidshealth.org/parent/medical/ears/cleft_lip_palate.html#  if you would like to know more.  We have a great Children's Hospital here in Knoxville, and also an excellent surgeon who actually adopted a Chinese boy with cleft several years ago...isn't God's detailed care of us just amazing?!?

Update: Joshua's Surgery went well and he is at home with the Bryants resting.

Small Group Grants Available

$6000 was designated for small grants through the 10-to-the-City program. At this time the maximum amount of each grant is $500. To date we have had two requests. The criteria are that the funded effort should create incentives for servant leadership and/or result in community impact.

Some suggested ways to apply the funds would be to cover the expenses of

  • An Amachi mentee going to CCDA (Christian Community Development Association)
  • Youth to a summer experience such as a music camp or leadership training (not necessarily Christian-based)
  • Home-schooling parents or students for an enrichment experience
  • Prayer training

We ask you to put these funds to good work. The application is on the homepage of the website, www.allsoulsknoxville.com Approved expenses will be reimbursed upon submission of receipts.

Daughter of Uniqua Brown

Diapers Needed for the family of the young woman who was shot in Mechanicsville

The young mother, Uniqua Brown, who was shot in Mechanicsville this past week was a member of Overcoming Believer's Church who meets in the Old City. She left behind four little ones, and their grandmother could really use some help during this difficult time.  The church's pastor, Daryl Arnold, hopes to "flood the alter with diapers" this Sunday, but they will take donations past then as the need will be ongoing.
Here is a note from their church:

The babies are 4yrs (girl). 2 yrs (boy). And the twins (girls) are 7 days old. If possible please don't only get newborn things for the twins because they will grow very fast. The 2yrs old is in pull ups and very CHUNKY (LOL) size 4. Anything will help this grandmother.

Our H.E.L.P.S committee at church is spearheading this on behalf of Uniqua Brown's Family.

Mother Ann Upton is over the H.E.L.P.S and collecting for the family.

Because we are in a Multi-Church Facility that has a Daycare Center everything is being taken to the House of Mother Ann to avoid any confusion and she is delivering. There is a Box outside of her home to drop things in.

 Her address is:

2401 Brooks Ave

Knoxville, TN 37914

Or her number is 865-207-5697 and she will be glad pick it up herself.

If you want to bring them to me (Bryden Banister) I can also get them to my coworker who attends their church. My email is brydenbanister@gmail.com Thank you for your help!

Be an Amachi Mentor with Knoxville Leadership Foundation!

"More than a program, [Amachi] is the passionate response to the needs of children with one or both parents in prison. These children are invisible to most of us. There are few viable programs to address the specific needs of the 'invisible' children. The Amachi program is designed to address these needs and later the potential negative direction of these children's lives. Through Amachi, mentoring matches are made and support is offered by Amachi partners and participating Amachi congregataions."

New City Events this Summer!

Thanks to you, our missional work through the Arts continues.  In fact, because of your support and patronage-especially where the Square Room (www.thesquareroom.com) at Cafe4 is concerned-our capacity to creatively engage Knoxville culture for redemptive purposes is growing.

In June, the Square Room will cultivate a host of gifted local artists and organizations in the Jazz Lunch (June 6), a sneak peek of The WordPlayer's theatrical production, You're A Good Man Charlie Brown www.wordplayers.org (June 12), a much anticipated CD Release concert by local Jazz phenom, Wendel Werner (wendelwerner@fb, June 14),  and an evening featuring the talents of Greg Adkins (www.gregadkinsonline.com), Adam Whipple (www.adamwhipple.com), and Bill Wolf (June 28)-indeed, come and be amazed as these three swap original songs and countless instruments during the evening.   A final concert in June features Caleb, www.calebmusic.com (June 29), a progressive band that is quickly making a name for themselves in the region as impeccable musicians and songwriters-that they grew up under the tutelage of their father, Steven Curtis Chapman, helps set their musical maturity in context.

Adam Whipple

In July and August, UK transplant David Clifton (www.littleroom.com) and the class of the local acoustic scene in Joey English will team up July 5.  On July 13, International TV celebrity and outdoorsman Les Stroud of SurvivorMan (www.lesstroud.ca) fame will be with us.  John Mark McMillan (www.johnmarkmcmillan.com), best known for his anthem "How He Loves," will bring his progressive sound to the Square Room July 17, followed a few days later by two gifted and well-liked local songwriters, Ben Bannister and Ethan Norman (panwild@fb).  High summer programming concludes with one of the finest guitarists in the world, Phil Keaggy (August 9, www.philkeaggy.com) and Grammy nominee, Jennifer Knapp (August 16, www.jenniferknapp.com).

The Arts are a gift from God, and many of those we are working with this summer understand that.  In their stewardship, the Arts reflect a demanding and joyful discipline.  In their expression, they represent an invitation for all of us to explore truth and beauty-love and loss-in the deep places of our hearts and minds.

It's a privilege and responsibility to give evidence of God's kingdom in this way to artists and their audiences.   I deeply appreciate your willingness to join us in this journey.  Hope to see you over the summer in the Square Room at Café4.
