Youth Meet and Greet April 14th
Youth and parents 6th - 12th grade, come and meet the new Youth leader, Shawn Mauer, after church for pizza and drinks and learn about his plans for developing the youth program.

Please remember Doug Banister, Rebecca Loy, Jill Branson, Susanne Hassell, and Buddy and Kathy Odom in prayer as they are attending Larry Crabb's School of Spiritual Direction Conference this week.

There will be a new class, Rethinking Spiritual Warfare, starting Monday, April 29th for six weeks in the Conference Room on the third floor. Taught by Mark Pate and Doug Banister, it will reframe spiritual warfare and base it around the concept of Word and Power and the ability of faith and order to transform you. Come and gain a new understanding of your authority in the spiritual realm. The class will last from 6-7:30 with a powerful prayer time afterward.

It's finished! Doug's new book came back from the designer earlier this month, and it looks fantastic. Last year, Doug preached a ten-part sermon series on Jeremiah 29:4-7 that explored how our All Souls family can invite God's kingdom to come more fully in Knoxville. Seek the Peace of the City: Ten Ways to Bless the Place Where You Live builds on those sermons. We'll be using the book in Pilgrimage classes in the future. To download Seek the Peace, click here.

Ron Wollard will be gone from April 20th - May 15th to have surgery in Los Angeles, and needs help getting meals to Daniel in Minvilla Housing. He is hoping to find groups of people to provide groceries and meals. If you can help in any way, please contact him at rdw57ord@gmail.com. Thank you!

Carolyn Carpenter and Allie Eber are looking for places to live in Old North Knoxville or the 4th and Gill area.
They are hoping to be in that area in order to remain close to school and close to Western Heights which is where they both volunteer. If you know of any homes available or occupied places that need new roommates, please let them know.

Emily Brewer looking for a roommate. Male or female, preferably in their 20's-30's. I live in Mechanicsville close to the interstate in an old 1800's house with a lot of character that has been kept up nicely over the years. The house is two stories, with one bathroom. My bedroom is downstairs and the room being rented would be upstairs. I am looking for someone who is relatively quiet, doesn't stay up into the wee hours of the night, and doesn't have alot of people over to the house. No pets, either, as I have a fairly anti-social cat that would not welcome other animals. The monthly rent cost would include internet & all KUB bills. The total is $465 per month. I would have the renter added onto the lease that I am currently on - the landlord is very nice and lives about a block away, and this is his only rental house. The lease I am on ends in October 2013. Email me at emilyjbrewer@me.com.

13th annual Vestival: South Knoxville's Art & Heritage Festival May 11th 11am-7pm Vestival is an annual music festival sponsored by the Candoro Arts and Cultural Center held in south Knoxville at the original office building for the Candoro Marble Company. The purpose of Vestival is to provide a diverse cultural and artistic event to the general public. Particular emphasis is placed on serving the citizens of the Vestal community, a community that was once a vibrant industrial community when the Vestal Lumber Company and the Candoro Marble Works were major industrial organizations. After these two companies closed, Vestal went into economic decline. It is part of the City of Knoxville empowerment zone due to its poverty level, unemployment rate, poor housing conditions and low educational levels. Vestal is a community with both rural and urban characteristics and celebrates its own history with the Knoxville community

through Vestival.

Dogwood Arts Festival is here! In 1947, New York newspaper reporter John  Gunther, came into town, checked out the area, then returned to New York and wrote "Knoxville is the ugliest city I ever saw in America... Its main street is called Gay Street; this seemed to me to be a misnomer."  Thus, in 1955, members of the Knoxville Garden Club, along with a group of concerned citizens with a vision began a civic beautification project... the Dogwood Trails. Dogwood Arts is a 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to promote and celebrate our region's arts, culture, and natural beauty. The Festival which goes through April has trails, exhibitions, art fairs and bus tours. Check out the full calendar here.

Calling All Photographers! Knox Heritage's popular Art & Architecture Tour returns in 2013 with another contest for local photographers. The featured area this year is the University of Tennessee campus. In addition to historic buildings (>50 years old), the 2013 contest pays tribute to noted architect Bruce McCarty and includes five structures designed by McCarty. Photographers are invited to submit photos of structures on the list. Submissions that meet all requirements will be reviewed by a jury panel, and the winners' works will be the basis of the tour.
On Friday, June 14, a reception and gallery exhibition for the winning photographers and event attendees will be held at the McClung Museum. Following the reception, a guided walking tour based on the winning photographs will be led on campus by author and historian Jack Neely. In July, winning images will be displayed at the Emporium in downtown Knoxville.
Knox Heritage will accept entries to the photography contest until 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, 2013. Tickets for the June 14 reception and tour will be available beginning May 1.

New City Events, from Kenny Woodhull
We are well on our way toward a very good month in the Square Room at Cafe4, and I want to make sure everyone is aware of what is going on--that is to say, before its come and gone and you are kicking yourself for not coming out.  Consistent with the eclectic nature of our programming this Spring, I feel we've got something compelling for nearly everyone.

This week, on Wednesday (April 10) during the lunch hour, for example,  we are hosting bite-size ballet with a special program offered by theAppalachian Ballet (11:30am-1pm).  On Thursday night, April 11, Nashville musician, Steve Moakler, will be with us as featured guest during our weekly singer-songwriter night.  Steve is a gifted artist who will set a high standard for our local community.

Finishing out the week on Friday, April 12, Andrew Peterson, with the band Caleb, will be playing through his most recent album, Light for the Lost Boy, in its entirety.  If you are familiar with Andrew's music then you need little encouragement to enjoy him in the intimate environment of the Square Room.  If you are new to Andrew and his prolific career, come and find out why a music critic with USA Today called "Light for the Lost Boy" one of the 10 best albums of the year!  At a time in his career when he might blunt a creative edge, Andrew taps into deep themes and provides some very fresh music that both kicks and connects.  For what it's worth, I consider "Keep to the Old Roads" one of the most beguiling coming of age songs ever written.

Next week, our Wednesday lunch series continues with special vocal performances from graduate level music students at UT.  Four students will peform snippets of their recitals on Wednesday, April 17.  On Thursday, April 18, with the world-class talents of UK transplant extrordinaire, David Clifton, the Square Room community will offer part one (April 18) of a three part (April 25, May 16) workshop series on the art and science of song-writing.  On Friday, April 19, former front man for Caedmon's Call, Derek Webb, will bring his characteristic sound to the Square Room in a special 10 year anniversary of his project, "She Shall and Must Be Free."

Derek Webb

And lastly, on Saturday, April 27, we'll have a bit of a shoot out among some very fine emerging local bands in the form of the Monday Movement, Parke Avery, and Cereus Bright.  If you've not seen Cereus' Tyler Anthony and bandmates perform live you're missing something special: finely crafted lyrics well delivered in a way that musically captures the spirit of the coming generation.

Artists are a gift to any community.  And missional artists--like some of these who are part of the Square Room community in April--give us the special gift to see with new eyes and feel from places in our hearts we thought had hardened over.  Hope you'll come join us some time soon--and with friends!   For more information about these and other art-based projects served by New City Resources, visit us at www.newcityresources.org or www.thesquareroom.com.
