Stephen Ministry Training Coming Up
Are you unsure of how to talk with people who are going through tough times? Have you ever wondered if perhaps you ought to be a counselor of some sort? Do you find people approaching you for help with their life problems or situations? Do you find yourself giving great advice that is never taken? If you have a heart to care for people and if you answer "yes" to any of these questions, consider taking the upcoming Stephen Ministry training, a 50 hour training class that will equip you to walk with someone who finds his or herself in a place ofconfusion, change, loss or grief.
There is a $50 training fee for materials. Scholarships are available needed. For a more complete picture of Stephen Ministries, go to http://www.stephenministries.org/
Training will begin next month, so please contact Dan Frye at danfrye39@mac.com or Rebecca Loy at loy.rebecca@gmail.com
for more information if you are interested or would like more information.
 | | David & Debbie Gayk | Knoxville is one of 20 finalists!Knoxville's Idea: Knoxville will create a culture of healthy eating and eliminate food deserts by stimulating connections in the urban food cycle between land, farming jobs, food processing, distribution, sale, and composting.
You can read more about Knoxville's idea and view the 2 minute video here: http://huff.to/13b6S0A.
Please cast your vote for Knoxville here: http://huff.to/XpwcJj. Then ask your friends, neighbors, and colleagues to join us in supporting Knoxville!
The city will receive $50K if the video gets the popular vote, regardless if the idea wins the $1 million prize. Each computer can only record one vote, so please help us spread the word to as many people as possible. Thanks for your support! Three-time Volunteer Opportunity The Girl Scouts are seeking a volunteer to facilitate a packaged program to middle school girls at Norwood Middle School in Oliver Springs, right outside of Oak Ridge. It would be held March 19, April 16 and May 7, and could be in the morning (8-11:30 a.m.) or afternoon (11:30 a.m. -3 p.m.) depending on the volunteer's availability. There are a few prerequisites including becoming a registered adult Girl Scout for $12, completing a Volunteer Application, a short online training and a short in-person training. This could also be a team effort, if there are people who would like to lead together. Also, if you can't make the March date due to time, but are still interested-we can make that work. Email Melissa Trimble at mtrimble@girlscoutcsa.org for more info. Ashley Addair will be painting for the Art on Tap fundraiser for KMA, April 30. CITY EVENTS
New City Resources/ Square Room Events:
On Saturday, March 9th, Knoxville natives, Eleanor and Rebekah Angel bring their original music to the Square Room in the form of Ten Bartram, a fun and mesmerizing folk fusion band with water-tight harmonies, mandolin, guitar, ukulele, upright bass, and cello. That same night, we'll have the honor of having one of Ed Cash's emerging artists, Hannah Rhyne, open the evening for us. For those of you who heard her at Old North Abbey in December you know that she may very well steal the show. It should be a great evening with some young and exceptionally talented musical artists.
Tony Sabota and Michael Williams have just installed some of their original artwork in the Square Room at Cafe4--and it will blow you away! By combining elements of orthodox iconography and progressive portraiture these unique works have a unique way of engaging and capturing. The exhibit will be up for a little more than a month. When you come, be prepared to linger, giving yourself an opportunity to both lose and then maybe find yourself in them. The show officially launches Friday, March 8th, the same night of a special three band concert in the Square Room, featuring Cereus Bright, Hill and Wood, and Songs of Water.
Singer-Songwriter night launches Thursday, February 28 at 8pm in the Square Room at Cafe4 but goes every week! While in ten years of booking New City Cafe we hosted a boat-load of regional and national artists, looking back now I think one of the most important things we ever did was cultivate a constructive community in which local singer-songwriters could consistently gather, perform, encourage, critique and--as relationships developed--even collaborate with each other. With the Singer-Songwriter night in the Square Room now launching, I'm jazzed about what new thing may emerge as original song-craft is given an opportunity to grow in the chrysalis of intentional community. I hope to see you there Thursday night--or any other Thursday night at 8pm starting the last day of February. Contact Kenny Woodhull for more info: kenny@newcityresources.org Sign up today for Introduction to Compassion Ministry taught by Grant Standefer, the Executive Director of Compassion Coalition! This 4-week course equips you with practical ways to reach hurting people in our city and includes the scriptural foundation of compassionate service, ideas on discerning where to serve, resources, and important lessons to know as you and your church engage the community. The classes will be held Tuesday evenings beginning February 26, 6-8 pm at Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church (February 26, March, 12 & 19) and West Park Baptist (March 5); the fee is $30 to cover the cost of required books and materials. Partial scholarships are available. Registration required: contact Rebecca at Rebecca@compassioncoalition.org or 251.1591 x1.
Rhythm N' Blooms (April 5-7!) celebrates Tennessee's role in American Roots music -
including but not limited to country, jazz, blues, bluegrass, and rock - by featuring musical performances by locally-revered and nationally renowned artists. They aren't all from Tennessee; and some of them aren't even from the United States, but their music has been undeniably influenced by those styles popularized right in our back yard.
The 2013 lineup is one you won't want to miss!
