Old Staff and New at the Staff retreat

(PLEASE NOTE NEW DATE - OCTOBER 18TH - ON ROUNDTABLE EVENT. IT WAS PRINTED INCORRECTLY LAST WEEK)

A roundtable on the politics of inequality will be held at 7pm TOMORROW October 18, at the Baker Center's Toyota Auditorium on the UT campus. The roundtable will include four speakers: Nate Kelly, University of Tennessee; Nita Rudra, University of Pittsburgh; Fred Solt, University of Iowa; and Joe Soss, University of Minnesota. Jana Morgan will be moderating the discussion. Each of the speakers is a leading scholar whose research examines a different facet of inequality and politics, which allows for multiple perspectives from experts. We will begin the roundtable with each speaker discussing different aspects of inequality in the United States and around the world. Some of the topics they will touch upon include: the evolution of inequality over time in the US, the political causes of inequality, the interplay between inequality and poverty, the impact of inequality on public opinion around the world, and the relationship between trade and inequality in the global market. These topics are interdisciplinary in nature and should be of interest to many. Once the speakers make their initial presentations, we will open the floor up to questions or comments from those in attendance, which we believe will provoke excellent opportunities for discussion between the presenters themselves and the audience members. Given the increasing attention being paid to inequality within political and social dialogue in the US and our recent discussions at All Souls about peace in our city, these are important and relevant issues.

10 to the City Update THIS week

The next important step in determining the best use of 10% of the All Souls budget to make the greatest difference in seeking the peace and prosperity of the City of Knoxville will occur this Sunday directly after Church.   The purpose of this phase of the process is to refine the options and make sure they are clear and understandable leading up to our final meeting on November 18 when we will vote on the options.

Similar ideas proposed at our brainstorming session on September 16 have been combined and researched, and a list of the resulting options have been divided into 9 different categories: 1) Arts and hospitality, 2) healthcare and elderly, 3) housing and homeless, 4) food for all, 5) economic self-sufficiency/good jobs, 6) youth and education, 7) spiritual renewal, 8) justice and reconciliation, and 9) leadership development/other.   On Sunday, you will be asked to participate in a small facilitated group helping to refine the resulting options in the category of your choice.

Ebullient Levi P. at the Sneedville Camping Trip
I (Susanne Hassell) am forming a team for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Light The Night Walk, and I hope you will join me. I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma 15 months ago and many from All Souls prayed and supported me in countless ways. And once again I need your help! Please consider walking on my team or helping to raise funds.

After chemotherapy last fall and a successful stem cell transplant in December, I am back at work and very grateful to be in full remission. While reading the psalms, I learned that thank offerings, "todah," are tangible ways of giving thanks to God. "...sa

crifice thank offerings and tell of God's works with songs of joy." (Ps.107:22)

Team Green Hope is my "todah" expression of gratitude. This verse carried me through many difficult days: "May the God ofgreen hope fill you up with joy, fill you up with peace, so that your believing lives, filled with the life-giving energy of the Holy Spirit, will brim over with hope!" (Rom. 15:13, Message)

Festivities and a short walk with lighted balloons will be Thursday, Oct. 25, 6pm at Circle Park on the UT campus.

SEEK THE PEACE OF OUR YARDS - CALL DANIEL AISENBREY
"Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce." - Jer. 29:5

While you no longer have to worry about neighbors ding-dong-ditching zucchini on your front porch, the gardening season is far from over in East Tennessee! Fall is the perfect time to grow delicious veggies while leaving behind the sweltering heat and aggravating insects of summer. It's also a great time to give your soil a boost for next spring with a healthy dose of compost or organic fertilizer, or maybe even build a raised bed or two that will be ready and waiting come spring.

Whether you want to break ground on your first garden or expand on a self-sustaining urban homestead, I want to help! Services include, but are not limited to: custom raised beds/planters, drip irrigation, rain barrels, compost systems, season-extension, and general garden maintenance.

Contact Daniel Aisenbrey at 423-200-6363, or dcaisenbrey@gmail.com for a free consultation. Let's seek the peace of our yards, neighborhoods, and city!
