Upcoming Events

Marilyn, Cory, Quinn Jorgensen, Doug Banister

A roundtable on the politics of inequality will be held at 7pm on October 15, at the Baker Center's Toyota Auditorium on the UT campus. The roundtable will include four speakers: Nate Kelly, University of Tennessee; Nita Rudra, University of Pittsburgh; Fred Solt, University of Iowa; and Joe Soss, University of Minnesota. Jana Morgan will be moderating the discussion. Each of the speakers is a leading scholar whose research examines a different facet of inequality and politics, which allows for multiple perspectives from experts. We will begin the roundtable with each speaker discussing different aspects of inequality in the United States and around the world. Some of the topics they will touch upon include: the evolution of inequality over time in the US, the political causes of inequality, the interplay between inequality and poverty, the impact of inequality on public opinion around the world, and the relationship between trade and inequality in the global market. These topics are interdisciplinary in nature and should be of interest to many. Once the speakers make their initial presentations, we will open the floor up to questions or comments from those in attendance, which we believe will provoke excellent opportunities for discussion between the presenters themselves and the audience members. Given the increasing attention being paid to inequality within political and social dialogue in the US and our recent discussions at All Souls about peace in our city, these are important and relevant issues.

Kate and Will M.

I (Susanne Hassell) am forming a team for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Light The Night Walk, and I hope you will join me. I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma 15 months ago and many from All Souls prayed and supported me in countless ways. And once again I need your help! Please consider walking on my team or helping to raise funds.

After chemotherapy last fall and a successful stem cell transplant in December, I am back at work and very grateful to be in full remission. While reading the psalms, I learned that thank offerings, "todah," are tangible ways of giving thanks to God. "...sacrifice thank offerings and tell of God's works with songs of joy." (Ps.107:22)

Team Green Hope is my "todah" expression of gratitude. This verse carried me through many difficult days: "May the God ofgreen hope fill you up with joy, fill you up with peace, so that your believing lives, filled with the life-giving energy of the Holy Spirit, will brim over with hope!" (Rom. 15:13, Message)

Festivities and a short walk with lighted balloons will be Thursday, Oct. 25, 6pm at Circle Park on the UT campus.

One on One Amachi Fundraising Event October 18th.

The Orangery Restaurant 5412 Kingston Pike, 37919. Special guest Cuonzo Martin. Go to KLF.org for tickets. People of faith mentoring children of promise!

Amachi is a Nigerian word meaning "Who knows but what God has brought us through this child?"

There are over 800 children in Knox County with one or both parents in prison. Statistically, without intervention these children of promise have a 70% chance of becoming incarcerated as adults. We've got to stop the cycle. Children with mentors do better in school, get along better with their families and are less likely to abuse drugs or alcohol than their peers. Having a mentor is great for any child, but for a child whose parents are locked up, it's a lifeline. A mentor shows the child by example that there is a better way. Mentors teach these children life skills that can literally save their lives.

Daylight is starting to wane, which means it must be time for Knox County Public Library's Movies on Market Square! On September 7, the 9th season of fido-friendly outdoor movies launches its fall line-up. Every Friday night from September 7-October 12 (7-10pm), the public and their beloved four-pawed companions are invited to a free, family movie presented by PetSafe. The public gets to pick the flicks. Voting for the 2012 movie series runs from August 8 - 27 at www.knoxlib.org/movies.

There are many more events in the city....check them out on our calendar here!
