BRAC's Monthly e-Newsletter

October
 2013

Greetings!

Welcome to October and Fall Proper!

September was insane.  Our thoughts and energy remain with those affected by the worst flooding in Colorado's recorded history.  We have seen a tremendous response to this disaster, and wish to extend our most sincere gratitude to first responders, local heroes, caring neighbors, and all those involved in the massive clean-up efforts.  Thank you from all of us at BRAC.

On the racing front, we had an action packed September - Collegiate Track Nationals in the Springs, the final season of the Bear Creek Lake Time Trial Series, and cross racing in both 99 degree heat and chilly slopped-out mud in the dark.  Many thanks to our event directors, who juggled dates, re-routed courses and re-scheduled events to deal with the Flood.  Your efforts are much appreciated by the racing community.

October brings us a tremendous lineup of cross racing  The nation's best racers will descend on us for the Colorado Cross Classic and Boulder Cup weekend.  Look for October races in Frisco, Lakewood, Boulder, Golden, Loveland, Longmont and Parker.  We have the full spectrum of cross racing - from big production events to midweek silliness.  There is something great happening at a cross race near you!

Here's to a safe, healthy and fun October,

Chris

More than 125 junior campers enjoyed a massively successful BRAC Junior Cross Camp over the last weekend of September.  Held at the Rocky Mountain
Easter Seals in Empire, the Camp was directed by Deirdre Moynihan, coached by Marty Albe, managed by Clint Bickmore, and featured great sponsors, incredible volunteers and brilliant sunshine.  "Thank you to the kids for your efforts and enthusiasm - you bring out the best in all of us," said Clint Bickmore, BRAC Board President.  "And a huge shout to Adam from Alpha Bicycle Co for tuning 125+ bikes to perfection!"

We have a huge photo album from Camp posted on our Facebook Page - check it out!

Life Saver:

BRAC Member Tim Crossen

Saves Fellow Racer at Bear Creek

Joe Turek.  Photo by Megan Hottman.

On Thursday, September 19, 2013, BRAC member and Bear Creek Lake Time Trial racer Joe Turek suffered a heart attack as he finished his race.   Joe was immediately attended to by fellow racer Front Ranger Tim Crossen, a spin instructor who has Red Cross first aid and resuscitation training.  Tim immediately applied compressions to Joe's chest until the on-site EMT arrived, followed quickly by West Metro Rescue.  Tim's efforts literally saved Joe's life and Joe was even able to attend the next week's time trial (as a spectator!).  Everyone at BRAC wishes Joe a speedy recovery, and we offer our most sincere gratitude to Tim and the medical professionals who accomplished a miracle to save Joe's life.

The commitment shown by these schools and athletes is extraordinary, and we offer HUGE congratulations to the coaches, directors, athletic programs, and athletes who earned these titles.

2014 Cyclo-Cross National Championships

Update and Volunteer Opportunities

BRAC is a proud Community Partner of the 2014 Cyclo-Cross National Championships to be held at Valmont Bike Park in Boulder.  As a dedicated partner, one of our biggest roles is to help gather the hundreds of volunteers required to host a successful six-day event.  BRAC members will have the fantastic opportunity to be the first group to sign-up for volunteer slots for the event.  Please see the Boulder CX 14 Home Page for complete information, including lodging for out-of-state friends, links to volunteer shifts and sign-ups (up soon), and training (including tips training for alcohol) for volunteers through the City of Boulder.  We're closing in on 100 days til Cross Nats - it's time to get ready for a spectacular week of racing as we welcome the country's best to Colorado.
