World Vets Volunteers Impact Animal Lives in Peru: Trixie the street dog
World Vets volunteer, Dr. Marian Boden, who performed the surgery, lies with Trixie following the operation

Trixie was a street dog with a badly wounded right front leg. Luckily she had been taken in by a local woman and her family. When Trixie was brought to our team, during World Vets recent campaign in Cusco, it appeared that she had been hit by a car.

The family had been cleaning her leg wound, which healed overtime, though the leg kept dragging. The wound would also constantly break open and get infected. They sought veterinary care, to have the leg amputated, but it was too expensive and they could not afford it. So, they continued to care for her on their own, putting a sock over the leg and wound to protect it.

With help from our local partners, the family was able to bring Trixie to World Vets field clinic in Cusco. There our team, specifically Dr. Marian Boden and Dr. Teri Weronko, were able to lessen her pain and increase her comfort by providing the much needed operation (free of charge). We are happy to report that Trixie has had a great recovery and is now smiling!

World Vets Latin America Veterinary Training Center Starts Pilot Internship Program
Nicaraguan interns (from left to right) Mariel Calero, Julie Alfaro,  Mariela Garcia

Established in 2011, World Vets Latin America Veterinary Training Center provides free surgical instruction and training to Latin American veterinarians and upper level veterinary students. Up until recently, the center has only provided, weekly, condensed surgical courses. However, new to the program's portfolio is an internship program for Latin American professionals. With this program we strive to create a positive and low-stress learning environment that will advance the veterinary career of interns as well as their ability to better care for their patients.

As part of this pilot program, we recently welcomed three Nicaraguan interns (pictured) for a 6 month intensive internship. They will participate and receive high quality instruction in surgical techniques, anesthesia, patient safety and comfort as well as pain management.

World Vets volunteer, Dr. Laurie Clauss, donates a veterinary textbook to Peruvian veterinary professionals on a recent campaign

This past year World Vets undertook a veterinary textbook drive to benefit veterinary professionals abroad. We`d like to thank everyone who supported this endeavor by donating books.

To date textbooks have been delivered to World Vets Latin America Veterinary Training Center, located in Granada, Nicaragua. Our bookshelf is now fully stocked with a great resource of knowledge to benefit the veterinarians and upper level veterinary students who take part in our free surgical training and instruction course at the center.

Textbooks were also distributed to recipients as part of our collaboration with the US Navy`s `Pacific Partnership` humanitarian aid mission. Island nation recipients include Marshall Islands, Solomon Islands and Kiribati.

And most recently, World Vets was able to facilitate veterinary textbooks to Bahri University in the Sudan. We`d like to extend a  special thanks to Dr. Rasha Nouman who personally delivered the textbooks. She`s reported that these books have been a great addition to the university's small library.

Our aim in providing recently published veterinary textbooks and materials abroad is to strengthen veterinary knowledge and facilitate a better understanding of safe and effective veterinary practices. We believe this will in turn promote healthier, happier and sustainable animal populations.

We received an overwhelming number of textbooks and still have many more to deliver and distribute! At this time we are collecting monetary donations to contribute to the shipping costs involved in sending veterinary textbooks to beneficiaries. If you would like to contribute, please do so here
