World Vets Develops New Animal Rescue and Disaster Relief Training

After responding to international disasters, World Vets is launching animal rescue training in addition to other educational opportunities.  The first training program will be held this November in Nicaragua and will take place over 8 days/7 nights.  Two sessions will be offered.

Rescue expert Kim Little will teach the technical animal rescue component of the course and Dr. Sarah Seitz will cover issues specific to disaster relief.  She will cover topics such as strategies to minimize disease transmission, first aid under field conditions and diseases not commonly seen in the United States.

World Vets is currently creating a database of potential disaster relief volunteers that can be deployed in the event of an international disaster.  If you would like to be considered as a volunteer for disaster relief, you will be required to have completed this course.

Upon completion of the course, participants will receive a certification in Technical Animal Rescue through Rescue 3 International and will receive an official certificate and patch.

World Vets Launches New Latin America Website and Facebook Page

Last December, the World Vets Surgical Training Center opened in Granada, Nicaragua with the support of the Fondation Brigitte Bardot.  The center provides free surgical instruction and training for Latin American veterinarians and upper level veterinary students.  The center is also the base of operations for the International Veterinary Medicine Program that are offered at select times throughout the year.

The center offers regularly scheduled training sessions and has launched a website to promote the center and all the educational opportunities,  www.worldvetslatinamerica.org.  In addition, a Facebook page has also been created and will provide fans with updates and success stories.

The center provides free veterinary care, including sterilization, to street animals in need.

World Vets Commemorates World Animal Day in Mauritius

World Animal Day started in 1931 and is celebrated every year on October 4. This date represents the Feast Day of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.   With the support of Fondation Brigitte Bardot, World Vets sent a team to Mauritius where they worked in collaboration with local animal welfare organization PAWS Mauritius. Together we raised awareness about the need to improve animal health on the island and provided free veterinary care, including spay/neuter services.

World Vets Team Celebrated World Rabies Day In Ecuador

According to the World Health Organization, rabies claims 55,000 human lives on average every year.  World Rabies Day was September 28 and World Vets volunteers were in Ecuador providing free rabies vaccinations in addition to operating a spay/neuter and preventative health clinic in and around Otavalo, Ecuador.

Thank you to the Fondation Brigitte Bardot, PAE Ibarra, local municipalities and our dedicated World Vets volunteers for your support for the World Vets project in Otavalo.

World Vets Offers Four Spring International Veterinary Medicine Programs

The World Vets International Veterinary Medicine Program's spring sessions will be held in Granada, Nicaragua at our surgical training center for veterinary, pre-veterinary and technician students who wish to gain clinical and practical veterinary experience.   In addition to surgical instruction, students and instructors will participate in a multi-disciplinary veterinary program and cultural experience that not only will enhance their education, but will also provide a broader understanding of international veterinary medicine.

Veterinary students will perform spay and neuter surgeries in a low stress environment with one-on-one instruction with an experienced veterinary instructor.  Our goal is for veterinary students to be competent at performing uncomplicated spay and neuter surgeries by the end of the program.

Pre-veterinary and technician students will work under the guidance of licensed technician and veterinary instructors.  They will learn how to prepare patients for surgery, such as performing complete physical exams, administering pre-anesthetic medications, catheter and endotracheal tube placement, bladder expression, anesthetic induction, and monitoring of patients while under anesthesia.  Veterinarians will provide instruction to all students throughout the program.

In addition, students will participate in a rural equine and small animal clinic.  World Vets veterinarians and students will provide care to animals who do not have access to veterinary services.  For more information, click here.
