As we strive to address community challenges through service, we hope the funding opportunities below will allow you to engage additional volunteers and ultimately improve the services you are able to provide.

 The following funding opportunities are currently accepting applications. The Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC) compiles these opportunities - offered by outside organizations - and presents the relevant information to you. Robert Wood Johnson Foundation: Roadmaps to Health Prize

  

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Roadmaps to Health Prize honors outstanding community efforts and partnerships across the United States that are helping people live healthier lives. Up to six winning communities will each receive a $25,000 cash prize and have their success stories celebrated and shared broadly with the goal of raising awareness and inspiring locally-driven change across the country. For the purposes of this prize, "a community" is defined as one of the following: town, city, county, tribe or tribal community, or region (such as contiguous towns, cities, or counties).

Dollar General Youth Literacy Grants

 

Dollar General Literacy Foundation Youth Literacy grants provide funding to schools, public libraries, and nonprofit organizations to help students who are below grade level or experiencing difficulty reading. Grant funding is provided to assist in the following areas:

  • Implementing new or expanding existing literacy programs
  • Purchasing new technology or equipment to support literacy initiatives
  • Purchasing books, materials or software for literacy programs

Housing & Urban Development Choice Neighborhoods Planning Grants

 

The Department of Housing and Urban Development Choice Neighborhoods Planning Grants program provides support to improve severely distressed public or multi-family housing that is located in distressed neighborhoods. Planning grants support the development of comprehensive neighborhood revitalization plans which, when implemented, will be expected to achieve the following three core goals: housing, people, and neighborhood.

Refugee Microenterprise Development Projects

 

The Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) within the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) is pleased to announce the availability of funds for the Refugee Microenterprise Development Project. The broad goals of this program are to: 1) Assist refugees in becoming economically self-sufficient by owning and managing a small business; 2) Provide seed money to refugee serving organizations to start and develop microenterprise program that will serve refugees at sustained and expanded levels; and 3) Help mainstream organizations develop the experience of serving refugee populations. In order to achieve these objectives, award recipients under this announcement will provide pre-business and post-business technical assistance as well as capital to refugee entrepreneurs.

Diligent Recruitment of Families for Children in the Foster Care System

 

The Administration for Children and Families with the Department of Health and Human Services is currently soliciting applications for grants that will develop programs to recruit resource families for children in foster care. Successful applications will: implement comprehensive, diligent recruitment programs for resource families, including kinship, foster, concurrent, and adoptive families for children and youth served by public child welfare agencies; and effectively identify, engage and support resource families as a means of improving permanency outcomes and building lasting connections for children in foster care. 2013 Second Chance Act Juvenile Reentry Program

 

The Second Chance Act of 2007 (Pub. L. 110-199) provides a comprehensive response to the increasing number of incarcerated adults and juveniles who are released from prison, jail, and juvenile residential facilities and are returning to their communities. The Second Chance Act Juvenile Reentry Program helps ensure the transition youth make from secure confinement facilities to the community is successful and promotes public safety. Eligible juveniles must have been confined under juvenile court jurisdiction. This program is authorized by the Second Chance Act, Pub. L. 110-199, (42 U.S.C. § 3797w)

Champion Creatively Alive Children Creative Leadership Grants 2013

 

Champion Creatively Alive Children (R) grant opportunity program provides grants for innovative, creative leadership team building within elementary schools. Apply now for the opportunity to receive a grant for your school. Each grant-winning school (up to 20 grants awarded) receives $2,500 and Crayola products valued at $1,000.

State Farm ® Good Neighbor YOUth In The Driver Seat Grants

 

Learning to drive is one of the most exciting milestones in a teen's life. To support teens and their teachers in this rite of passage, Youth Service America and State Farm® are offering YOUth in the Driver Seat, a service and learning program that includes training, ongoing support and consultation, and a $1,500 grant to implement a 14 week project that encourages safe driving habits, service to the community, and student achievement. This grant is open to teachers and students in public high schools in all 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and in the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Ontario and New Brunswick.

Tony Hawk Foundation Skatepark Grants

 

The Tony Hawk Foundation seeks to foster lasting improvements in society, with an emphasis on supporting and empowering youth. The principal focus of foundation grants will be to encourage and facilitate the design, development, construction, and operation of new quality skateboard parks and facilities, located in low-income communities in the United States.

Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation Grants

   

The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) Foundation is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association and provides a number of grant programs in Michigan. BCBSM Foundation grant programs are conducted in Michigan, by Michigan researchers and non-profit community organizations to increase access, address critical public health issues, improve the quality of care, and enhance efficiency. Through the Community Health Matching Program, we encourage community-based nonprofit organizations to develop, test or validate new approaches that address community health problems.

SCHOLARSHIP/AWARD OPPORTUNITIES  
   

Liberty Mutual-Responsible Sports Community Grant

 

The Liberty Mutual Insurance Responsible Sports Community Grant program rewards youth sports teams, clubs, associations and schools who demonstrate their commitment to a Responsible Sports environment. The Community Grant is a free, competition-based fundraising program for youth sports organizations. Teams, clubs and schools from around the country register to participate. Once approved to compete, organizations rally their adult supporters to take a Responsible Sport Parenting or Responsible Coaching quiz and credit the point to the organization. At the end of the three month grant period, the organizations with the most points earn the $2,500 grants.

Amway's Who Cares Challenge: Youth Leadership Contest

 

Amway will honor 10 youth change-makers in the United States and Canada. The contest is open to youth ages 13 - 22. Applicants will be narrowed down through public voting to a group of 100 entries. Charity partner Free The Children will then select 10 winners to receive $10,000 each to give to the nonprofit organization of their choice. Five grand prize winners from among those 10 will also receive a trip for themselves and a companion to Free The Children's next We Day youth empowerment event in Minnesota on October 8, 2013.

National Child Awareness Month Ambassador Program 


The National Child Awareness Month Youth Ambassador Program, a project of Youth Service America (YSA) and Festival of Children Foundation, is looking for youth ages 16-22 to serve as part of a year-long Ambassadorship to help combat critical issues facing young people today. The Youth Ambassadors Program will kick off this September during National Child Awareness Month. With funding, training, and ongoing project-planning guidance from service-experts at YSA, the Youth Ambassadors will serve as community leaders, raising public awareness and affecting change around their issue area. Fifty-one Youth Ambassadors will be selected - one per state & D.C. - creating a powerful national network of young people who raise their collective voice in service to other youth.

Everyday Young Heroes Award

  

The Everyday Young Hero program highlights one outstanding youth a week that are making extraordinary contributions and commitments to service. Nominations must come from a parent, teacher, or other adult mentor; supporting material is recommended. The Everyday Young Hero award is open to those between the ages of 5-25. Winners receive an announcement in Youth Service America's (YSA) weekly National Serving e-Briefing, a certificate and letter from YSA's President and CEO, a customized press release, local market media coverage, and publicity on the YSA's website, Twitter, and Facebook accounts.
