Welcome to the Volunteer MICHIGAN Funding Alert! Volunteer MICHIGAN is the newest program of the Michigan Community Service Commission and encompasses a family of complimentary volunteer initiatives. As we strive to address community challenges through service, we hope the funding opportunities below will allow you to engage additional volunteers and ultimately improve the services you are able to provide.

 

The following funding opportunities are currently accepting applications. The Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC) compiles these opportunities - offered by outside organizations - and presents the relevant information to you. The MCSC is not offering these funding opportunities directly.   

                           
 

GRANT OPPORTUNITIES 

 

Jamba Juice "It's All About the Fruit & Veggies Grant Program

  

Since 2010, Jamba Juice has provided more than 100 school and community gardens with grants to start and support health and nutrition education. The "All About the Fruits and Veggies" grant program provides youth garden initiatives with $500 in gardening supplies, curriculum, soil amendments and plants to help create engaging nutrition and gardening experiences. Recipients will be selected based on plans to promote nutrition education, ideas for incorporating fruit and vegetable activities into the curriculum, and ability to sustain the program over multiple years. It's All About the Fruit and Veggies Grant program is open to schools, community organizations, and non-profit programs in the United States gardening with at least 15 children between the ages of 3 and 18.

Taco Bell Foundation for Teens

 

The Taco Bell Foundation for Teens supports nonprofit organizations that provide teens with career, community, and education experiences that inspire them to stay in school and graduate. The Foundation provides grants through the following categories: Graduate to Go College Experience, Graduate to Go Career Experience, and Graduate to Go General Experience.  College Experience grants focus on programs that allow teens to explore opportunities at local universities, community colleges, and/or technical schools, and also learn about the college application process. Career Experience Grants promote programs that offer teens the opportunity to find out about various career options through job shadow days, professional mentorship programs, etc. General Experience Grants support unique teen programs/experiences that fall outside of the other category criteria.

Captain Planet Foundation Grants

 

The mission of the Captain Planet Foundation is to promote and support high-quality educational programs that enable children and youth to understand and appreciate our world through learning experiences that engage them in active, hands-on projects to improve the environment in their schools and communities. The Captain Planet Foundation primarily makes grants to U.S.-based schools and organizations with an annual operating budget of less than $3 million. Grants from the Captain Planet Foundation are intended to serve as a catalyst to getting environment-based education in schools and inspire youth and communities to participate in community service through environmental stewardship activities.

Walmart Foundation

 

The Walmart Foundation seeks to supported underserved populations across the country who need help through their three grant programs: Local Giving, State Giving, and National Giving. Whether it's a small grant to a local school or a large grant to a hunger relief organization working across several states, the Walmart Foundation engages in opportunities that align with their focus areas: Hunger Relief & Healthy Eating, Sustainability, Women's Economic Empowerment and Career Opportunity. The Walmart Foundation is currently seeking applications for its State Giving Program, which awards grants valued at $25,000 to $250,000. Eligible nonprofit organizations must operate on a regional/state level or be affiliates/chapters of larger organizations that operate on the regional/state level.

Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge

  

The Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge at the elementary school level is designed to help students work together to solve an environmental problem in their classroom or school community. The Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge offers students the opportunity to use science, math, and reading/language arts concepts and skills to create sustainable, reproducible environmental improvements. This scholarship is open to all elementary school classes in grades K-5 with a class advisor/mentor, who must be a full-time or part-time school employee.

The McCarthey Dressman Education Foundation Academic Enrichment Grant

 

The McCarthey Dressman Education Foundation is seeking proposals through their Academic Enrichment Grant Program that foster understanding, deepen students' knowledge, and provide opportunities to expand awareness of the world around them. The Academic Enrichment Grants provide funding for programs that nurture the intellectual, artistic and creative abilities of children from low-income households through in-class and extra-curricular programs that improve student learning. Grants in amounts up to $10,000 per year are available for a maximum of three years provided the eligibility requirements continue to be met.

The McCarthey Dressman Education Foundation Teacher Development Grant

 

The McCarthey Dressman Education Foundation believes that continuous, insightful and innovative professional training and growth is crucial to the effectiveness of educators. As such, the Foundation is seeking proposals in their Teacher Development Grant program that provide funding to individuals or small teams of teachers for the formation and implementation of groundbreaking K-12 classroom instruction. The Foundation awards grants in amounts up to $10,000 per year for a maximum of three years, provided the eligibility requirements continue to be met.

ING Unsung Heroes

 

Are you an educator with a class project that is short on funding but long on potential? Do you know a teacher looking for grant dollars? ING Unsung HeroesŪ could help you turn great ideas into reality for students. For more than 15 years, and with nearly $3.8 million in awarded grants, ING Unsung Heroes has proven to be an A+ program with educators. The program's "alumni" have inspired success in the classroom and impacted countless numbers of students. Each year, 100 educators are selected to receive $2,000 to help fund their innovative class projects. Three of those are chosen to receive the top awards of an additional $5,000, $10,000 and $25,000. All K-12 education professionals, whether or not they are clients of ING, are eligible.

J-Serve International Day of Jewish Youth Service Grants


J-Serve is the International Day of Jewish Youth Service and has been part of Youth Service America's Global Youth Service Day since 2005. In 2013, J-Serve will be held on April 28. A limited number of J-Serve micro-grants of up to $500 will be awarded to community projects committed to creating service opportunities that bring Jewish teens together to participate in a J-Serve project. Projects that are creative and innovative, especially those that will be first-time events in a community, as well as projects conceived and planned by teen project leaders will receive preferential reviews.

The Dollar General School Library Relief Fund

 

Dollar General, in collaboration with the American Library Association (ALA), the American Association of School Librarians (AASL), and the National Education Association (NEA), is sponsoring a school library disaster relief fund for public school libraries in the states served by Dollar General. The fund will provide grants to public schools whose school library program has been affected by a disaster and can be used to replace or supplement books, media and/or library equipment in the school library setting. Grants will be awarded to public school libraries that have incurred substantial damage or hardship due to a natural disaster (tornado, earthquake, hurricane, flood, avalanche, and mudslide), fire or an act recognized by the federal government as terrorism. The impact can be through direct loss or through an increase in enrollment due to displaced/evacuee students.

Waystohelp.org Grants

 

Waystohelp.org exists to engage, inspire and enable high school students to make a positive difference in the world. The organization does this by making it easy for them to learn about, and take action against, 16 of today's most pressing social issues. In addition to providing these resources, waystohelp.org also offers grants to support youth-led projects where the applicants are passionate about their issue, show creativity, and have a big impact.

SCHOLARSHIP/AWARD OPPORTUNITIES  

      

GenerationOn Hasbro Community Action Hero Award

 

GenerationOn is now accepting nominations for the Hasbro Community Action Hero Award. This award recognizes outstanding young volunteers who show that you are never too young to make a difference in your local or global community. Hasbro Children's Fund and generationOn will celebrate five young people between the ages of 5 and 18 for their extraordinary community service and volunteer activities at a special recognition event in New York City and award each winner a $1,000 educational scholarship.

World of Children Youth Award

 

The World of Children Award, the only global recognition and funding nonprofit that recognizes individuals who are changing the lives of children worldwide, is searching for selfless individuals serving vulnerable children. The 2013 World of Children Youth Award carries a minimum grant of $25,000 and recognizes a young person under the age of 21 who is making extraordinary contributions to the lives of other children. This person must have been doing this work for three years and have created a sustainable program they plan to continue to lead. Recipients of the 2013 World of Children Award will be officially announced and celebrated in New York City on November 7, 2013.

Peace First Prize  

 

Are you a young person who's taken action to make your school or community more peaceful? Do you know a young person who's taken personal risks to stand up for their beliefs? Who's rallied others to make a difference? Now is your chance to celebrate the powerful contributions of peacemakers by nominating them for the Peace First Prize. The Prize will recognize young people between the ages of 8-22 for their compassion, courage and ability to create collaborative change. Through a two-year $50,000 Peace First Fellowship, the Peace First Prize will invest in their leadership as peacemakers and share their stories with the nation.

Do Something Awards

  

DoSomething.org is the country's largest nonprofit for young people and social change. Since 1996, they have been honoring the nation's best young world-changers, 25 and under. Do Something Award nominees and winners represent the pivotal "do-ers" in their field, cause, or issue. In 2013 five finalists will appear on the Do Something Awards on Vh1 and be rewarded with a community grant, media coverage and continued support from DoSomething.org. The grand prize winner will receive $100,000 during the broadcast.
