Welcome to the Volunteer MICHIGAN Funding Alert! Volunteer MICHIGAN is the newest program of the Michigan Community Service Commission and encompasses a family of complimentary volunteer initiatives. As we strive to address community challenges through service, we hope the funding opportunities below will allow you to engage additional volunteers and ultimately improve the services you are able to provide.

 

The following funding opportunities are currently accepting applications. The Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC) compiles these opportunities - offered by outside organizations - and presents the relevant information to you. Continuum of Care Program Competition

 

The Continuum of Care (CoC) Program is designed to promote a community-wide commitment to ending homelessness; to provide funding for efforts by nonprofit providers, states, and local governments to quickly re-house homeless individuals and families while minimizing the trauma and dislocation caused to homeless individuals, families, and communities by homelessness; to promote access to and effective utilization of mainstream programs by homeless individuals and families; and to optimize self-sufficiency among individuals and families experiencing homelessness.

National Endowment for the Arts "Our Town" Grant

 

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) works to improve the lives of America's citizens in many ways. Communities across the nation are leveraging the arts and engaging design to make their communities more livable with enhanced quality of life, increased creative activity, a distinct sense of place, and vibrant local economies that together capitalize on their existing assets. Through the Our Town Grant, the NEA will provide a limited number of grants, ranging from $25,000 to $200,000, for creative placemaking projects that contribute toward the livability of communities and help transform them into lively, beautiful, and sustainable places with the arts at their core. Our Town will invest in creative and innovative projects in which communities, together with their arts and design organizations and artists, seek to improve their quality of life, encourage greater creative activity, foster stronger community identity and a sense of place, and revitalize economic development.

Mid-MI Program for Greater Sustainability- Community Reinvestment Fund Grants

 

The Mid-Michigan Program for Greater Sustainability is a regional initiative designed to expand and improve the planning process for housing, transportation, green infrastructure, energy efficiency, environmental issues, economic development, education, and more. The Community Reinvestment Fund was established to ensure that traditionally underserved and marginalized populations have the opportunity to become involved in these planning processes at all levels of government. The fund is currently seeking unique approaches to reaching these unrepresented and underrepresented communities and groups that will result in these populations becoming involved in the planning process. This involvement may include serving on planning boards, councils, and commissions, or participating in community planning forums. Successful applicants will submit proposals that actively, creatively, and measurably engage traditionally underserved and marginalized populations in the planning process at all levels of government.

Sodexo Foundation Youth Grants

 

Youth Service America (YSA) and the Sodexo Foundation invite young people to "take hunger personally" and join the fight to end childhood hunger for the 16 million children in food insecure homes. Sodexo Foundation Youth Grants of $500 are available for youth-led service projects that bring together young people, families, Sodexo employees, and other community members to address childhood hunger in the U.S. Young people, ages 5-25, are eligible to apply. Projects must take place on or around Global Youth Service Day, April 26-28, 2013.

Saginaw Community Foundation     

  

The Saginaw Community Foundation provides support for a wide variety of programs and purposes benefiting the citizens and communities of Saginaw County. They are currently accepting applications for their Unrestricted Grants Program and the YWCA Fund for Women and Girls Program. The Unrestricted Grants Program is an all-purpose grants program, providing funding for various projects that meet basic eligibility requirements. Areas of interest include: arts, education, health, civic improvement, human services, environment, and youth. Organizations applying for this grant may request up to $10,000 per application. The YWCA grant program focuses on the physical, mental and educational needs or women and girls in the community. The YMCA Fund for Women & Girls Program provides funding that benefits women and children physically, educationally, emotionally, socially, and spiritually.

Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Joint Venture Habitat Restoration and Protection

 

The goal of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative is to target the most significant environmental problems in the Great Lakes ecosystem by funding and implementing federal projects that address these problems. As part of this initiative, the two bird habitat joint ventures that are in the Great Lakes watershed: the Upper Mississippi and Great Lakes Region Joint Venture and the Atlantic Coast Joint Venture will be working with the Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration programs in the Midwest and Northeast Regions of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to competitively fund state and other partner projects for long-term habitat restoration, enhancement, or protection, for the conservation of native Great Lakes fish and wildlife populations, particularly migratory birds.

VA Supportive Services for Veteran Families Program  

  

Veteran Affairs (VA) has been authorized to offer community-based grants through the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) Program. These grants will provide supportive services to very low-income Veteran families in or transitioning to permanent housing. Under the SSVF program, VA awards grants to private non-profit organizations and consumer cooperatives who can provide supportive services to very low-income Veteran families living in or transitioning to permanent housing. Grantees provide eligible Veteran families with outreach, case management, and assistance in obtaining VA and other benefits, which may include: health care services, daily living services, personal financial planning services, transportation services, fiduciary and payee services, legal services, child care services, and housing counseling services.

Big Read

 

The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts, designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture and to encourage citizens to read for pleasure and enlightenment. The Big Read supports organizations in developing community-wide programs that encourage reading and participation by diverse audiences. Grants from $2,500 to $20,000 are available.

Air Force Association - Air Force Junior ROTC Grants

 

The Air Force Association (AFA) is a non-profit, independent, professional military and aerospace education association promoting public understanding of aerospace power and the pivotal role it plays in the security of the nation. It sponsors professional development seminars and recognizes excellence in the education and aerospace fields through national awards programs. In addition to presenting scholarships and grants to Air Force active duty, Air National Guard, and Air Force Reserve members and their dependents, AFA also awards educator grants to promote science and math education at the elementary and secondary school level. The Air Force Junior ROTC Grant was established to promote aerospace education throughout classrooms and units. Funds may be used for any aerospace education related activity from purchasing textbooks or videotapes, to going on a field trip to an aerospace museum, Air Force base, or other aerospace facility.

Katie's Krops Grants

 

The mission of Katie's Krops is to start and maintain vegetable gardens of all sizes and donate the harvest to help feed people in need, as well as to assist and inspire others to do the same. The grant winners will receive materials to start a vegetable garden to feed people in need in their community. The winner will be awarded a gift card to a garden center in their area for $400, support from Katie's Krops, and a digital camera to document the garden and the harvest. Applications for all types of vegetable gardens, such as a container garden if you live in a city, or a vegetable garden in your neighborhood or at your school, will be considered.

Captain Planet Foundation Grants

 

The mission of the Captain Planet Foundation is to promote and support high-quality educational programs that enable children and youth to understand and appreciate our world through learning experiences that engage them in active, hands-on projects to improve the environment in their schools and communities. The Captain Planet Foundation primarily makes grants to U.S.-based schools and organizations with an annual operating budget of less than $3 million. Grants from the Captain Planet Foundation are intended to serve as a catalyst to getting environment-based education in schools and inspire youth and communities to participate in community service through environmental stewardship activities.

J-Serve International Day of Jewish Youth Service Grants


J-Serve is the International Day of Jewish Youth Service and has been part of Youth Service America's Global Youth Service Day since 2005. In 2013, J-Serve will be held on April 28. A limited number of J-Serve micro-grants of up to $500 will be awarded to community projects committed to creating service opportunities that bring Jewish teens together to participate in a J-Serve project. Projects that are creative and innovative, especially those that will be first-time events in a community, as well as projects conceived and planned by teen project leaders will receive preferential reviews.

The Dollar General School Library Relief Fund

 

Dollar General, in collaboration with the American Library Association (ALA), the American Association of School Librarians (AASL), and the National Education Association (NEA), is sponsoring a school library disaster relief fund for public school libraries in the states served by Dollar General. The fund will provide grants to public schools whose school library program has been affected by a disaster and can be used to replace or supplement books, media and/or library equipment in the school library setting. Grants will be awarded to public school libraries that have incurred substantial damage or hardship due to a natural disaster (tornado, earthquake, hurricane, flood, avalanche, and mudslide), fire or an act recognized by the federal government as terrorism. The impact can be through direct loss or through an increase in enrollment due to displaced/evacuee students.

Do Something Seed Grants

 

Do Something Seed Grants of $500 are given out every week to help young people who are working to start community action projects and programs. These grants can be used towards project ideas and programs that are just getting started, or to help bring ideas into realization. These grants can also be used towards projects that are already developed and sustainable to help expand projects and grow their impact.

KaBOOM! Spruce Project Grants

 

The Dr. Pepper Snapple Group will be distributing $750 grants to 100 different playground spruce-up projects. Organize your friends, clean up a playground, and you can become eligible for a $750 grant. Don't think you can organize in time? The grant is part of the Let's Play initiative to get kids and families active nationwide.

SCHOLARSHIP/AWARD OPPORTUNITIES 

  

  

C-SPAN StudentCam Competition  

 

C-SPAN's StudentCam is an annual national video documentary competition that encourages students to think seriously about issues that affect our communities and our nation. Students are asked to create a short (5-8 minute) video documentary on a topic related to the theme "Message to the President." The video should reflect what the student thinks is the most important issue the president should consider in 2013. Students make compete as individuals or in groups of up to three. Two categories will judged, grades 6-8 and 9-12, with a maximum award of $5,000, plus $1,000 in digital equipment for the students' school.

Christopher Columbus Awards 

 

The Christopher Columbus Awards is a national, community-based science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) program for middle school students. The program challenges students to work in teams of three to four, with an adult coach, to identify a problem in their community and apply the scientific method to create an innovative solution to that problem. Eight finalist teams and their coaches will receive an all-expense-paid trip to Walt Disney World to attend National Championship Week. During the week, they will have the ability to compete for cash prizes and the $25,000 Columbus Foundation Community Grant, plus a $200 development grant to further refine their idea.

2013 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Awards

  

Applications are now being accepted for the 2013 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Awards. The National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award honors out-of-school arts and humanities programs that celebrate the creativity of America's young people, particularly those from underserved communities. This award recognizes and supports excellence in programs that open new pathways to learning, self-discovery, and achievement. Twelve award-winning programs will receive the award this year, as well as a $10,000 prize. After-school and out-of-school time arts and humanities programs sponsored by museums, libraries, performing arts organizations; educational institutions (e.g., preschools; elementary, middle, and high schools; universities; and colleges), arts centers, community service organizations, businesses, and eligible government entities are encouraged to consider submitting an application.

Everyday Young Heroes

  

The Everyday Young Hero program highlights one outstanding young person a week that is making extraordinary contributions and commitments to service. Nominations must come from a parent, teacher, or other adult mentor; supporting material is recommended. The Everyday Young Hero award is open to those between the ages of 5-25. Winners receive an announcement in Youth Service America's (YSA) weekly National Serving e-Briefing, a certificate and letter from YSA's President and CEO, a customized press release, local market media coverage, and publicity on the YSA's website, Twitter and Facebook accounts.
