Welcome to the Volunteer MICHIGAN Funding Alert! Volunteer MICHIGAN is the newest program of the Michigan Community Service Commission and encompasses a family of complimentary volunteer initiatives. As we strive to address community challenges through service, we hope the funding opportunities below will allow you to engage additional volunteers and ultimately improve the services you are able to provide.

 

The following funding opportunities are currently accepting applications. The Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC) compiles these opportunities - offered by outside organizations - and presents the relevant information to you. The MCSC is not offering these funding opportunities directly.   

                           

Environmental Education Regional Grants

 

The Environmental Protection Agency is seeking grant proposals from eligible applicants to support environmental education projects that promote environmental stewardship and help develop knowledgeable and responsible students, teachers, and citizens. This grant program provides financial support for projects that design, demonstrate, and/or disseminate environmental education practices, methods, or techniques, and that will serve as models that can be replicated in a variety of settings.

Great Lakes Fish and Wildlife Restoration Act

 

The Great Lakes Fish and Wildlife Restoration Act (GLFWRA) provides assistance to states, Indian tribes, and other interested entities to encourage cooperative conservation, restoration, and management of the fish and wildlife resources, as well as their habitats, in the Great Lakes Basin. Regional projects are authorized activities of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that are related to fish and wildlife resource protection, restoration, maintenance, and enhancement impacting the resources of multiple states or Indian tribes with fish and wildlife management authority in the Great Lakes Basin. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will be responsible for accomplishing regional projects on behalf of the state and/or tribal agencies submitting the regional project proposal.

National Science Foundation-Cyber Learning Transforming Education

 

The National Science Foundation (NSF) seeks to integrate advances in technology with how people learn to better understand how people learn with technology and how technology can be used productively to help people learn. It is expected that Cyberlearning research will shed light on how technology can enable new forms of educational practice and that broad implementation of its findings will result in a more actively-engaged and productive citizenry and workforce. Cyberlearning awards will be made in three research categories.

Environmental Justice Activities Small Grants Program

 

The Environmental Justice Small Grants Program supports and empowers communities working on solutions to local environmental and public health issues. The program assists recipients in building collaborative partnerships to help them understand and address environmental and public health issues in their communities. Successful collaborative partnerships involve not only well-designed strategic plans to build, maintain and sustain the partnerships, but also working towards addressing the local environmental and public health issues.

Continuum of Care Program Competition

 

The Continuum of Care (CoC) Program is designed to promote a community-wide commitment to ending homelessness; to provide funding for efforts by nonprofit providers, states, and local governments to quickly re-house homeless individuals and families while minimizing the trauma and dislocation caused to homeless individuals, families, and communities by homelessness; to promote access to and effective utilization of mainstream programs by homeless individuals and families; and to optimize self-sufficiency among individuals and families experiencing homelessness.

Sodexo Foundation Youth Grants

 

Youth Service America (YSA) and the Sodexo Foundation invite young people to "take hunger personally" and join the fight to end childhood hunger for the 16 million children in food insecure homes. Sodexo Foundation Youth Grants of $500 are available for youth-led service projects that bring together young people, families, Sodexo employees, and other community members to address childhood hunger in the U.S. Young people, ages 5-25, are eligible to apply. Projects must take place on or around Global Youth Service Day, April 26-28, 2013.

Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Joint Venture Habitat Restoration and Protection

 

The goal of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative is to target the most significant environmental problems in the Great Lakes ecosystem by funding and implementing federal projects that address these problems. As part of this initiative, the two bird habitat joint ventures that are in the Great Lakes watershed: the Upper Mississippi and Great Lakes Region Joint Venture and the Atlantic Coast Joint Venture will be working with the Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration programs in the Midwest and Northeast Regions of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to competitively fund state and other partner projects for long-term habitat restoration, enhancement, or protection, for the conservation of native Great Lakes fish and wildlife populations, particularly migratory birds.

National Endowment for the Arts "Our Town" Grant

 

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) works to improve the lives of America's citizens in many ways. Communities across the nation are leveraging the arts and engaging design to make their communities more livable with enhanced quality of life, increased creative activity, a distinct sense of place, and vibrant local economies that together capitalize on their existing assets. Through the Our Town Grant, the NEA will provide a limited number of grants, ranging from $25,000 to $200,000, for creative placemaking projects that contribute toward the livability of communities and help transform them into lively, beautiful, and sustainable places with the arts at their core. Our Town will invest in creative and innovative projects in which communities, together with their arts and design organizations and artists, seek to improve their quality of life, encourage greater creative activity, foster stronger community identity and a sense of place, and revitalize economic development.

VA Supportive Services for Veteran Families Program  

 

Veteran Affairs (VA) has been authorized to offer community-based grants through the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) Program. These grants will provide supportive services to very low-income Veteran families in or transitioning to permanent housing. Under the SSVF program, VA awards grants to private non-profit organizations and consumer cooperatives who can provide supportive services to very low-income Veteran families living in or transitioning to permanent housing. Grantees provide eligible Veteran families with outreach, case management, and assistance in obtaining VA and other benefits, which may include: health care services, daily living services, personal financial planning services, transportation services, fiduciary and payee services, legal services, child care services, and housing counseling services.

Christopher Columbus Awards

 

The Christopher Columbus Awards is a national, community-based science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) program for middle school students. The program challenges students to work in teams of three to four, with an adult coach, to identify a problem in their community and apply the scientific method to create an innovative solution to that problem. Eight finalist teams and their coaches will receive an all-expense-paid trip to Walt Disney World to attend National Championship Week. During the week, they will have the ability to compete for cash prizes and the $25,000 Columbus Foundation Community Grant, plus a $200 development grant to further refine their idea.

Katie's Krops Grants

 

The mission of Katie's Krops is to start and maintain vegetable gardens of all sizes and donate the harvest to help feed people in need, as well as to assist and inspire others to do the same. The grant winners will receive materials to start a vegetable garden to feed people in need in their community. The winner will be awarded a gift card to a garden center in their area for $400, support from Katie's Krops, and a digital camera to document the garden and the harvest. Applications for all types of vegetable gardens, such as a container garden if you live in a city, or a vegetable garden in your neighborhood or at your school, will be considered.

Healthy and Sustainable School Food Journalism Awards

 

The Healthy and Sustainable School Food Journalism Competition is designed to bring the hard facts about school food to entire school communities - in the students' own words. Articles submitted for consideration must be about the need for healthy, sustainable school food and must have been published in a school newspaper. U.S. high school students ages 13 to 18 can enter. Prizes include: $1,500 for first prize, $1,000 for second prize, $500 for third prize, and $300 for fourth prize. Winners will also receive $200 for their journalism class and the opportunity to have their work publicized on Earth Day's website.

Captain Planet Foundation Grants

 

The mission of the Captain Planet Foundation is to promote and support high-quality educational programs that enable children and youth to understand and appreciate our world through learning experiences that engage them in active, hands-on projects to improve the environment in their schools and communities. The Captain Planet Foundation primarily makes grants to U.S.-based schools and organizations with an annual operating budget of less than $3 million. Grants from the Captain Planet Foundation are intended to serve as a catalyst to getting environment-based education in schools and inspire youth and communities to participate in community service through environmental stewardship activities.

Do Something Seed Grants

 

Do Something Seed Grants of $500 are given out every week to help young people who are working to start community action projects and programs. These grants can be used towards project ideas and programs that are just getting started, or to help bring ideas into realization. These grants can also be used towards projects that are already developed and sustainable to help expand projects and grow their impact.

KaBOOM! Spruce Project Grants

 

The Dr. Pepper Snapple Group will be distributing $750 grants to 100 different playground spruce-up projects. Organize your friends, clean up a playground, and you can become eligible for a $750 grant. Don't think you can organize in time? The grant is part of the Let's Play initiative to get kids and families active nationwide.

The CHS Foundation funds effort to improve the future of rural America, agriculture, and cooperative business through education and leadership development. Citi Foundation Grants Support Affordable Housing, High School Success

 

The Citi Foundation supports affordable housing efforts, neighborhood revitalization, and programs to help high schoolers find a college or career path. The foundation also supports microfinance institutions and other nonprofit organizations seeking to increase the supply of asset building financial products and services. As part of this effort, the foundation seeks to identify innovative efforts that enhance an institution's ability to achieve scale and financial sustainability and support consumer's asset building goals. Grants will be awarded up to $1.5 million each.
