Welcome to the Volunteer MICHIGAN Funding Alert! Volunteer MICHIGAN is the newest program of the Michigan Community Service Commission and encompasses a family of complimentary volunteer initiatives. As we strive to address community challenges through service, we hope the funding opportunities below will allow you to engage additional volunteers and ultimately improve the services you are able to provide.

 

The following funding opportunities are currently accepting applications. The Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC) compiles these opportunities - offered by outside organizations - and presents the relevant information to you. Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities Program

 

The purpose of this grant is to invite proposals for funding from public or private Institutions interested in obtaining administrative funding to further build their capacity to market and promote their existing EBV Program to post 9/11 service-disabled veterans and to expand their existing consortium of world-class, 4-year colleges and universities that offer entrepreneurship training to service-disabled veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Community Foods Projects Competitive Grant Program

 

The Community Food Projects competitive grants program supports projects designed to meet the food needs of low-income people; increase the self-reliance of communities in providing for their own food needs; promote comprehensive responses to local food, farm, and nutrition issues; and meet specific state, local, or neighborhood food and agriculture needs.

Annual Technology Educator Awards
 

Vernier Software & Technology and the National Science Teachers' Association (NSTA) are currently accepting applications for the annual Vernier/NSTA Technology Awards. The 2013 awards program will recognize up to seven STEM educators - including one elementary teacher, two middle school teachers, three high school teachers, as well as one college-level educator - who promote the innovative use of data-collection technology using a computer, graphing calculator, or other handheld in the science classroom. Prizes for the winning educators include $1,000 in cash, $3,000 in Vernier products, and up to $1,500 toward expenses to attend the 2013 NSTA National Conference in San Antonio, Texas.

The Streisand Foundation

 

The Streisand Foundation primarily provides support to U.S.-based nonprofit organizations that are working on a national level. The Foundation's current national grantmaking interests include the preservation of the environment; women's issues, including reproductive choice and health-related concerns; civil liberties and democratic values; civil rights and race relations; and civic engagement. Grants generally range from $5,000 to $15,000.

Environmental Education Regional Grants

 

The Environmental Protection Agency is seeking grant proposals from eligible applicants to support environmental education projects that promote environmental stewardship and help develop knowledgeable and responsible students, teachers, and citizens. This grant program provides financial support for projects that design, demonstrate, and/or disseminate environmental education practices, methods, or techniques, and that will serve as models that can be replicated in a variety of settings.

Great Lakes Fish and Wildlife Restoration Act

 

The Great Lakes Fish and Wildlife Restoration Act (GLFWRA) provides assistance to states, Indian tribes, and other interested entities to encourage cooperative conservation, restoration, and management of the fish and wildlife resources, as well as their habitats, in the Great Lakes Basin. Regional projects are authorized activities of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that are related to fish and wildlife resource protection, restoration, maintenance, and enhancement impacting the resources of multiple states or Indian tribes with fish and wildlife management authority in the Great Lakes Basin. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will be responsible for accomplishing regional projects on behalf of the state and/or tribal agencies submitting the regional project proposal.

National Science Foundation-Cyber Learning Transforming Education

 

The National Science Foundation (NSF) seeks to integrate advances in technology with how people learn to better understand how people learn with technology and how technology can be used productively to help people learn. It is expected that Cyberlearning research will shed light on how technology can enable new forms of educational practice and that broad implementation of its findings will result in a more actively-engaged and productive citizenry and workforce. Cyberlearning awards will be made in three research categories.

Environmental Justice Activities Small Grants Program

 

The Environmental Justice Small Grants Program supports and empowers communities working on solutions to local environmental and public health issues. The program assists recipients in building collaborative partnerships to help them understand and address environmental and public health issues in their communities. Successful collaborative partnerships involve not only well-designed strategic plans to build, maintain and sustain the partnerships, but also working towards addressing the local environmental and public health issues.

Sodexo Foundation Youth Grants

 

Youth Service America (YSA) and the Sodexo Foundation invite young people to "take hunger personally" and join the fight to end childhood hunger for the 16 million children in food insecure homes. Sodexo Foundation Youth Grants of $500 are available for youth-led service projects that bring together young people, families, Sodexo employees, and other community members to address childhood hunger in the U.S. Young people, ages 5-25, are eligible to apply. Projects must take place on or around Global Youth Service Day, April 26-28, 2013.

Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Joint Venture Habitat Restoration and Protection

 

The goal of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative is to target the most significant environmental problems in the Great Lakes ecosystem by funding and implementing federal projects that address these problems. As part of this initiative, the two bird habitat joint ventures that are in the Great Lakes watershed: the Upper Mississippi and Great Lakes Region Joint Venture and the Atlantic Coast Joint Venture will be working with the Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration programs in the Midwest and Northeast Regions of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to competitively fund state and other partner projects for long-term habitat restoration, enhancement, or protection, for the conservation of native Great Lakes fish and wildlife populations, particularly migratory birds.

National Endowment for the Arts "Our Town" Grant

 

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) works to improve the lives of America's citizens in many ways. Communities across the nation are leveraging the arts and engaging design to make their communities more livable with enhanced quality of life, increased creative activity, a distinct sense of place, and vibrant local economies that together capitalize on their existing assets. Through the Our Town Grant, the NEA will provide a limited number of grants, ranging from $25,000 to $200,000, for creative placemaking projects that contribute toward the livability of communities and help transform them into lively, beautiful, and sustainable places with the arts at their core. Our Town will invest in creative and innovative projects in which communities, together with their arts and design organizations and artists, seek to improve their quality of life, encourage greater creative activity, foster stronger community identity and a sense of place, and revitalize economic development.

VA Supportive Services for Veteran Families Program  

 

Veteran Affairs (VA) has been authorized to offer community-based grants through the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) Program. These grants will provide supportive services to very low-income Veteran families in or transitioning to permanent housing. Under the SSVF program, VA awards grants to private non-profit organizations and consumer cooperatives who can provide supportive services to very low-income Veteran families living in or transitioning to permanent housing. Grantees provide eligible Veteran families with outreach, case management, and assistance in obtaining VA and other benefits, which may include: health care services, daily living services, personal financial planning services, transportation services, fiduciary and payee services, legal services, child care services, and housing counseling services.

The Dr. Pepper Snapple Group will be distributing $750 grants to 100 different playground spruce-up projects. Citi Foundation Grants Support Affordable Housing, High School Success

 

The Citi Foundation supports affordable housing efforts, neighborhood revitalization, and programs to help high schoolers find a college or career path. The foundation also supports microfinance institutions and other nonprofit organizations seeking to increase the supply of asset building financial products and services. As part of this effort, the foundation seeks to identify innovative efforts that enhance an institution's ability to achieve scale and financial sustainability and support consumer's asset building goals. Grants will be awarded up to $1.5 million each.

Recreational Grants for Golf Programs 

 

The United States Golf Association (USGA) and the National Alliance for Accessible Golf have teamed up to provide grants that encourage increased accessibility for golfers with disabilities. These grants will support organizations that introduce the game of golf to people who otherwise would not have the opportunity -- specifically kids from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. To administer the grant application process for organizations providing golf programs to individuals with disabilities, the USGA has partnered with the National Alliance for Accessible Golf. The Alliance is particularly interested in applications that demonstrate focus on inclusion of people with disabilities in programs that involve those without disabilities, with the ultimate goal of enhancing their inclusion into the fabric of the community.
