CJ Parent Weekly

Department News   |   Calendar   |   Reminders   |   Youth Programs   |   Community Bulletin

Greetings!

All of us are familiar with the pleasures and pressures the holidays can bring as we prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ with our loved ones. It can be particularly stressful for students, who must also set aside valuable time during the busy season in order to prepare for winter exams.

Although teachers have been assisting in the exam prep process, it is ultimately the students' responsibility to study and be ready to take each test. Fortunately, parents can also take steps now to help students successfully prepare for exam week, Dec. 18-21.

We strongly encourage all parents to take advantage of the following hints and tips while your child prepares to tackle exams:

  • Review the exam schedule with your child to make sure he/she knows when to be at school.
  • Help your child organize and prioritize his/her time.
  • Make sure your child has a quiet place, free of distractions, to study and prepare for exams.
  • Remind your child to bring home the appropriate study materials.
  • Have the necessary materials on hand that your child needs to to study. Some examples include:
    • index cards (for creating flashcards).
    • pens, pencils, and paper.
    • color pencils and markers.
    • batteries for calculators.
  • Encourage your child to study. Offer small rewards (such as making a favorite meal) for studying.
  • Volunteer to quiz your child on the test material, or allow him/her to tell you the information out loud (some students remember things better when reciting it out loud).
  • Remind your child to take breaks from studying. Getting a snack, taking a short walk/jog, etc. can help students regain focus and energy.
  • Be sure your child gets plenty of rest during exam time. Pulling "all-nighters" is neither the best way to learn the information nor healthy.
  • Be sure your child eats breakfast before coming to school to take exams.
  • Help make sure your child arrives on time for all exams.
Exams will be administered over a four-day period. Tuesday, Dec. 18, is a regular school day (8:05 a.m. to 2:59 p.m.); all students must report to Period 1 classes even if they are not taking an exam that period. Complete details are posted at cjeagles.org, or you may contact me with questions.

Sincerely,

Steve Fuchs, Director of the Academic Office  |  email

STUDENTS
Update from Student Body President Clare Geraghty '13

It is evident that we have officially transitioned from the fall sports season to winter season as our athletic facilities become packed with fans and students continuing their dedication to the Eagles, especially after this Tuesday's basketball game against Dunbar.

There is plenty still going on as Karaoke for the Cure and Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week were a huge successes and the Advent season begins influencing student life. Economics classes are offering a Multicultural Dessert Frenzy during lunches this week, proceeds benefiting the Wounded Warrior Project, bringing more delicious food to the CJ cafeteria. Many are looking forward to our Winter Wonderland Christmas Dance on Dec. 8, the first semi-formal dance that freshmen can attend.

But it isn't all fun and games because these last two weeks before break, students must really begin to buckle down and study for the midterm exams coming up. I know just about everyone is looking forward to enjoying two weeks of break, but I will definitely be rejuvenated and excited to return to school once the Christmas season is over!

Grading and Credit Information

Beginning this year CJ is awarding credit at the end of each semester instead of the end of the year. Below is what this means for your son or daughter.
  • A student's grade in each class at the end of the first semester (Jan.16) will be added to his/her permanent transcript. Credit will be awarded for each class he/she is passing. The same applies for grades at the end of the second semester (June 7).
  • A student's grade in every class will start over at the beginning of a new semester.
  • If a student has a grade that is an F at the end of either of the semesters, he/she will need to attend summer school for that portion of the class.

With questions about these items, students should please consult with their guidance counselor.

Janet Lasley

Janet Lasley Janet Lasley is in her 16th year at CJ. She teaches the ceramics classes and has also enjoyed teaching art appreciation in years past. Janet has taught mostly teens during her 39 years in education (Picasso died the year she began her career in 1973!) and still loves working with them.

In her early teaching years she coached drill team, plus led photography and yearbook clubs at two different middle schools. At CJ, Janet has enjoyed participating in mission trips and retreats including Junior Retreats, Kairos, and the Solsberry, Ind. and Cincinnati summer trips with students. Living in community is her favorite way to get to know people.

Janet attended high school in Hilton, N.Y., an apple and tomato farming town. Her Dad worked for Kodak so there are lots of pictures of her and her four younger siblings. Her favorite activities have always been reading, nature study, cooking, making art, and, of course, being with friends, family and her faith community. She loves books about survival during war or natural disaster.

Janet met her husband, Tom, on a summer job in Wisconsin and they have been together for 40 years. Said Janet, "A husband, two girls and eight grandkids later... all a joy!
