CJ Parent Weekly

Department News   |   Calendar   |   Reminders   |   Youth Programs   |   Community Bulletin

Greetings!

Enjoy a free day of fun for the whole family this Saturday at the CJ STEMM Celebration Family Expo -- part of the Dayton Regional Science Festival: Ignite Innovation event -- from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Student Conditioning Center.

Explore with your son or daughter what scientists, Watch Now!technologists, engineers, mathematicians, and medical and health care professionals do on a daily basis. Learn how their work helps solve global challenges and get hands-on at more than 40 exhibits.

Interactive displays will involve:

  • Generating electricity by riding an "Energy Bike," provided by DP&L and the Ohio Energy Project.
  • Driving CJ's XtremeBots, robots which have been used in DRMA battle competitions.
  • Painting with insects, an art activity led by the Maggot Man from the University of Dayton.
  • Discovering animal adaptations with live animals from Five Rivers Metroparks.
  • Exploring molecular gastronomy and futuristic food with a local chef.
  • PLUS much more...

We look forward to devoting a day to STEMM learning with you and the many Dayton-area organizations, schools and individuals who have volunteered to make this celebration possible. For the full lineup of exhibits and partners, visit cjeagles.org, or contact me with questions.

Hope to see you Saturday!

Sincerely,

Meg Draeger, CJ STEMM Coordinator

PARENTS
Grading and Credit Information
Beginning this year CJ is awarding credit at the end of each semester instead of the end of the year. Below is what this means for your son or daughter.
  • A student's grade in each class at the end of the first semester (Jan.16) will be added to his/her permanent transcript. Credit will be awarded for each class he/she is passing. The same applies for grades at the end of the second semester (June 7).
  • A student's grade in every class will start over at the beginning of a new semester.
  • If a student has a grade that is an F at the end of either of the semesters, he/she will need to attend summer school for that portion of the class.

Those fall athletes intending to take advantage of the Physical Education Waiver should have turned in forms by now. Any student who has not done so risks losing the ability to have this season count towards the waiver.

With questions about these items, students should please consult with their guidance counselor.

One Confirmed Case of Chickenpox in a Student

One CJ student has been confirmed to have contracted Varicella (otherwise known as chickenpox). Chickenpox is a contagious disease caused by a virus that is easily spread by sneezing and coughing or through contact with someone's chickenpox sores. This virus usually infects younger children; however, anyone can become infected. Those who haven't already had chickenpox or been vaccinated are more susceptible.

Early symptoms may include: aches, fever, and sore throat. Then a very itchy skin rash develops. If your child has never had the disease or been vaccinated:

  • Watch to see if a rash develops over the next 10 days to three weeks.
  • Don't send your child to school if he/she develops a rash. Contact your child's health care provider for a diagnosis and treatment. Report the diagnosis to CJ as soon as possible.
  • Wait six days from when the rash from chickenpox began, or when all sores are dry and crusted over, to send your child back to school.

Contact your child's health care provider if you feel he/she is at risk. More information is available at the U.S. National Library of Medicine's Web site. If you have questions, contact or email school nurse Tere McDonald, RN, at (937) 461-3740 x227.

Honors Biology Students Engineer Creative Solutions
Students in Amanda Ooten's Honors Biology classes are acting as environmental engineers this week during an investigation into how algae can be used as biofuel to reduce our carbon footprint. Using the engineering design process, students first created an algae growing chamber to see which group could grow the most algae. Next, they will create a public service announcement sharing the benefits of using algae as a biofuel. View pictures of the students' work >

As part of CJ's transition to Google Apps for Education, we will begin converting "@cjeagles.org" email accounts to the Gmail system during the Thanksgiving break. Users' actual email addresses will not change; however, instead of accessing CJ email through Microsoft Office Outlook's Web Access client, email will be accessed by logging in at google.com. Due to the switch, access to email will be limited or non-existent during the holiday weekend November 23-25.

If you have questions or concerns about CJ's transition to Google, please email or contact Steve Fuchs, director of the academic office, at (937) 461-3740 x205.
