Greetings!

February 25, 2014 - Welcome to another issue of "Independent Publishing Now" celebrating YOU, our members!

The bearer of Valentines Day, President's Day, and the annual observance of African American history, February is brimming with celebration. Taking a moment to focus in on February 25th's unique history, today is National Clam Chowder Day and also marks the premiere of George Bernard Shaw's The Philanderer (1907), Muhammad Ali's victory as the world heavyweight champion (1964), and the day the Beatles began recording their Abbey Road album (1969).

We are eagerly awaiting IBPA's Publishing University, which is less than a month away! Our premier educational event for independent publishers and self-published authors, this year's Publishing University is taking place March 21-22 in San Francisco!
Don't forget to register!

IBPA Member Highlights & Happenings
Joseph M. Labaki's book A Riffian's Tune was awarded the IBPA Benjamin Franklin Digital Silver Honoree at the beginning of this month. An autobiographical novel described by Publishers Weekly as brimming "with culture, humor and deeply moving stories," A Riffian's Tune conveys the importance of "forging your own path, the power of hope, and daring to step into the labyrinth of life." IBPA would like to congratulate Mr. Labaki on his much-deserved accolade! We would also like to congratulate February's silver honoree Tom E. Jones, author of Doer's Dilema: Why Achievers Suffer and What To Do About It , and gold honoree Comcast NBCUniversal, author of His Dream, Our Stories.

Vick Wadhwa's
first children's book
A New Take on ABCs- S is for Smiling Sunrise was released in honor of "I Love to Read Month" being celebrated in schools and libraries across the nation. Written
for preschoolers, kindergartners and early readers, the book teaches positive concepts with fun and educational, sing-along illustrated rhymes. Be sure to check out Wadhwa's author interview with Ventura's KVTA AM 1590, his official news release, and the book's video trailer.

North Carolinian photographer Billy Cone's newest book, Femme, was recently released and features close-up portraits of women of different ages and ethnicities. Photographed by Cone while living in Paris, the book's images are accompanied quotes about women from a scope of authors, ranging from Dostoevsky to Dickinson. Check out StarNews' profile of Cone for an in-depth look at the creation of Femme.

Liza F. Carter's documentary photography book Moving with the Seasons: Portrait of a Mongolian Family was recently profiled by both The Boston Globe and The Concord Journal in articles that detail the book's creation. Carter, a trained environmental scientist, had traveled to Mongolia to study endangered two-hump camels, but ultimately became enraptured by the warmth of the Mongolian people and their tradition of nomadic herding. Moving with the Seasons: Portrait of a Mongolian Family documents this evolving tradition.

Synergetic Press was named "Indie Groundbreaking Publisher" in the January issue of Independent Publisher. The award was accompanied by an article that details the press's beginnings and how it has evolved over the past three decades. To find out more about this award-winning press, check out their website and YouTube channel.

Square One Publishers clients Judi and Shari Zucker recently appeared on the Hallmark Channel's increasingly popular TV show "Home & Family" to promote their book The Ultimate Allergy-Free Snack Cookbook. Be sure to check out the twin-sister author's recipes and interview as well as Square One Publishers' website.
