Greetings!
January 28, 2014 - Welcome to another issue of "Independent Publishing Now" celebrating YOU, our members! You might not be aware, so we're here to tell you: today, January 28, is Kazoo Day! Although this could be our favorite January celebration, we weren't opposed to also celebrating Spaghetti Day (Jan 4); Rock & Roll Day...Elvis Presley's birthday! (Jan 8); and Where's the Beef Day (Jan 10) - January 10, 1984 being the first airing of the original Where's the Beef commercial.
And, more specifically, 2014 is the Year of the Horse. The optimistic nature of the Year of the Horse allows us to "cope with financial hardships in the belief that good fortune will soon be on the way." So, here's to a healthy and prosperous 2014 for all IBPA members...Giddy Up! ------

IBPA Member Highlights & Happenings
Mary Esparza-Vela's children's book Lucky's Lick received a Five Star Rating from Readers Favorite. Way to go! The book is about a young Hispanic boy who sits in his wheelchair in front of his house, waiting for his guests to arrive for his birthday party. His uncle walks in with a frisky little puppy that changes the boy's life. The story is about love and faith. Here's a great review. Here's a short feature video. But that's not all! Mary's You Can't Take the Dinosaur Home (published in English & Spanish) received a Five Star Rating from Readers Favorite and won a 2013 Book of the Year Award from Creative Child Magazine. The story characters have been developed into plush dolls that are sold with the books. You are welcome to see Kyzzie, Sweetz, and Hunee at www.luv-beams.com.
Esotouric Ink's Kim Cooper and Richard Schave are thrilled to share a terrific preview for their debut title, The Kept Girl (to be published Feb 1, 2014). The preview appeared on the Kirkus blog promoting The Kept Girl as one of eight mysteries to watch for in 2014. The story is a fact-based mystery featuring the real Raymond Chandler and the real LA cop who is a likely model for his character Philip Marlowe, and it was favorably mentioned in association with the forthcoming officially sanctioned new Philip Marlowe mystery from John Banville, The Black-Eyed Blonde.
Cynthia Brian wants you to know about their 501c3 literacy charity, Be the Star You Are!®, that promotes authors and books. As part of their recent project, Operation Mid-West Tornado Disaster Relief, they shipped over 2,000 new books to several locations in Illinois to give the gift of a brand new book to those who had suffered losses in the recent tornados. Author, Brooks Olbrys, partnered with them to ship his book, The Adventures of Blue Ocean Bob in addition to the books sent directly from the charity. If authors or publishers want to partner with Be the Star You Are!® on a project, they may email Cynthia at Cynthia@Star-Style.com.
Diane Vallere started Polyester Press as an imprint in late 2011 and joined IBPA around that time. She published the first book in her Style & Error Mystery Series, Designer Dirty Laundry, in June 2012, and Buyer, Beware (book 2) in March 2013. The third in the series, The Brim Reaper, is now available. The cool news is: Hyperion Media Group, a small production company in Los Angeles, has bought the option rights for the full Style & Erro Mystery Series! Very nice.
