Greetings!

August 27, 2013 - Welcome to another issue of "Independent Publishing Now" celebrating YOU, our members!

Happy Just Because Day! This day is reserved for doing something just because. It's also Be Kind to Humankind Week and Admit You're Happy Month! Well, we have to admit that we're happy to let you know that a lot of new benefits are coming your way. And, it's not just because it is be kind to humankind month. It is our mission to find benefits that will assist you in navigating the business of publishing - every day.

In fact, the IBPA team just emerged from a two-day board meeting where we were discussing what you might need for your bottom line. Look for our official new benefits announcement in September and each quarter from now on. In the meantime, if there is a benefit you'd like us to pursue, drop me a line at [email protected].

If you've discovered a helpful site, found a better way of doing something or have a tip that will save other members time or money, please pass it along and we'll share it on your behalf.

And, as always, if you have a question, remember to give us a call, anytime. If we don't have the answer, we'll find it for you!

IBPA Member Highlights & Happenings

Susanne Alexander-Heaton, award-winning children's author of The ABC Field Guide to Faeries, and owner of Motivated by Nature is excited to announce that a private sponsor has purchased 2,000 of her books, which were donated to the Further Education Society (FESA). The books will be given away over the next couple of years through their programs and special events such as Family Literacy Day. FESA focuses on learners with the lowest levels of literacy and education. With over 35 social agencies, they offer 70 - 80 free programs each year to over 700 vulnerable families throughout the Calgary area. Great work, Susanne!

IBPA member Carolyn Howard-Johnson was recently awarded the Diamond Award for Arts and Culture from Glendale California's Arts and Culture Commission and the City of Glendale Library. The Glendale Diamond Awards for Achievement in the Arts is bestowed upon those artists, community members, and organizations who have contributed substantially to the cultural life of the community. Carolyn is the author of the multi award-winning HowToDoItFrugally series of books for writers including The Frugal Book Promoter. Congratulations, Carolyn!

In recognition of PTSD Awareness month, Idyll Arbor, Inc. began a campaign to get their book, Faces of Combat: PTSD & TBI, into the hands of the veterans and their families who need it. Faces of Combat describes how the suicide of a previously deployed National Guardsman galvanized Montana officials to become a model state
in assessing the mental health of its soldiers, taking additional steps that should become the norm nationwide. In the book soldiers tell their stories, what happened to them in battle and what happened when they came home. For every book
purchased, Idyll Arbor is donating one to a veteran's organization. Idyll Arbor President, Tom Blaschko explains, "This is our way of saying thank you to those who have so faithfully served us and our country." If you would like to help, visit  www.facesofcombat.us.

WISDOM, The Midway Albatross, (Mims House) a children's picture book about the oldest bird in the world and how she survived the Japanese tsunami, has gone to Washington, D.C. As part of their ongoing efforts to contact relevant catalogs, Mims House sent review copies to the Smithsonian Museum Stores book buyer. The books were met with enthusiasm and Mims House was signed as a vendor. The author, Darcy Pattison, also spoke at the spring Arkansas Audubon state conference and in attendance was Jack Stewart, an Arkansas native who is on the national board for the Audubon Society. When the board met in early May in Washington, D.C., he provided copies of WISDOM, The Midway Albatross to each board member. That month,  Congress was considering a bill to fund safer fishing practices in the Pacific; long fishing lines, sometimes several miles long, are efficient for fishing, but the practice has a high fatality count for birds who get caught on a hook and drown, one of the dangers that Wisdom has so far avoided. The book also won the 2013 Writer's Digest Self-Published Book Award, Children's Picture Book and is a 2013 Finalist Next Gen Indie Book Award winner, Juvenile nonfiction and received a starred Publisher's Weekly review in February. Great work!
