News From the FielD

National Service Needs You Right Now
A temporary 6-month budget expires March 27, 2013. Our champions in Congress are fighting for national service right now, but they need your help. That is why Save Service in America, a campaign of Voices for National Service and ServiceNation, is circulating several letters of support and collecting signatures from key community leaders. It is crucial that we document the breadth of support AmeriCorps and other CNCS programs have earned, so we are ready to share it with Washington decisionmakers when the budget debates resume. For this to be successful everyone has to pitch in.  Can you reach out to your network of partners, champions, and board members so every letter shows the immense support for national service?  It's an easy online process.  http://bit.ly/V7pxS4

Tell Your Story of Service: National Service in Action Photo Contest

The months ahead are crucial in the fight to protect and promote national service.  In order to best tell the story of national service, we need to use powerful images.  After all, everyone knows that a picture is worth a thousand words! With this in mind, Save Service in America, a campaign led by Voices for National Service and ServiceNation, announce the first ever "National Service in Action" Photo Contest.  If you are passionate about the promise of national service, send us a photo of valuable service work being done in your community. The photographer that takes the best photo will be recognized at the 10th Annual Friends of National Service Awards Reception in Washington, D.C. on February 12, 2013.

Everyday Young Heroes

Blair High School Students

Silver Spring, MD

YSA recognizes the students of Blair High School in Silver Spring, MD, as Everyday Young Heroes for coming together to promote pedestrian public safety with the "Hey you, I'm looking at you!" campaign.

After the tragic death of their peer, Christina Morris-Ward, the students of Blair High School recognized the need to bring more awareness to the issue of paying attention when crossing the street.  In an effort to prevent pedestrian fatalities, the students decided to model for a public pedestrian safety campaign and promote awareness for pedestrians.  The campaign posters display an image of a student's eyes with the message "Hey you, I'm looking at you!"  These images are plastered on buses and are intended to increase pedestrian and driver safety.  The students are learning to be more aware of their surroundings, avoid dark clothing when walking at night, and to follow all traffic lights and crosswalk indications.

For their dedication to preventing pedestrian fatalities, we honor the students of Blair High School as Everyday Young Heroes.

To nominate a young person who has improved their community through service to be recognized as an Everyday Young Hero, please visit www.ysa.org/awards/hero.

Song of the WeeK

Alex Boye and Carmen Rasmusen Herbert - "Have I Done Any Good?"

"Have I done any good in the world today?
Have I helped anyone in need?
Have I cheered up the sad and made someone feel glad?
If not, I have failed indeed.
Has anyone's burden been lighter today
Because I was willing to share?
Have the sick and the weary been helped on their way?
When they needed my help was I there?
...
Doing good is a pleasure, a joy beyond measure,
A blessing of duty and love."
