Kids Call Kids to Action:
No Kid Hungry

Hunger and homelessness are among the top issue areas that motivate kids to serve. Kids understand what it means to feel safe and secure, to have food in their bellies. Children know these feelings, and they almost instinctively hurt when they see kids just like them who don't have that same security. The issue is local, it's often visible, and it's relatable. The innocence and empathy of a child asking why other children don't have a roof over their heads or food on their plates brings to life Dr. King's "fierce urgency of now."

National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week begins November 10. Co-sponsored by the National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Student Campaign Against Hunger, the event also marks the project kick-off for many grant recipients benefiting from a national partnership between YSA and the Sodexo Foundation. These are schools and community organizations embarking on long-term service projects to raise awareness and create change around the issue of childhood hunger.

10 Ways to Get Ur Good On This Autumn

Autumn is the season of thankfulness and reflection. There are many reasons to be thankful, but there are equally important reasons to help those less fortunate. Each year more than 1.6 million children under the age of 18 will experience homelessness. Autumn also provides the opportunity to be kind to your friends and family. World Kindness Day is in November and encourages youth to look beyond race and religion. http://bit.ly/S1XUsT

ServiceVote 12 for '12: Engaging Youth in the 2012 Elections Special Series

Youth Voter Turnout Strong; Determined Outcome in Key Swing States

CIRCLE released an exclusive turnout estimate showing that 22-23 million young Americans (ages 18-29), or at least 49%, voted in Tuesday's presidential election, according to national exit polls, demographic data, and current counts of votes cast. Young people represented 19% of the voters in the  election, with President Obama winning the majority of those votes over Governor Romney by 60% to 37%. In Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia, if Romney had won half the youth vote, or if young people had stayed home all together, he would have won those key battleground states.  A switch of those 80 electoral votes would have also changed the presidency, electing Romney as president. http://bit.ly/YTnZQK

Tell YSA How You Engaged Youth This Election Season

Let us know how you engaged youth this election season. Did you work with youth to register voters, engage candidates, or get out the vote? Did you host a mock election or a debate watch or a town hall? Did you use one of the resources or participate in one of the programs featured in the NSB?
Whatever you did, let us know at www.YSA.org/ServiceVote

You can also e-mail us with your story of how you engaged youth in the election and links to any photos or videos to servicevote@ysa.org

We'll feature the best stories in new resources we'll work on for the 2014 and 2016 elections!

Everyday Young Heroes

Victoria Poston

Calvert City, KY

YSA recognizes 17-year-old Victoria Poston of Calvert City, Kentucky as an Everyday Young Hero for using her passion and enthusiasm to aid in hunger relief efforts through volunteerism and an Empty Bowl Project.

Recognizing that one in six Americans is at risk of hunger, Victoria set out to help the hungry.  Victoria, along with other members of the community, utilized both print and social media to organize and execute an Empty Bowls Project in their community. Victoria showed true leadership and strength when key members of the planning committee were absent and the project needed to move forward, ensuring that bowls were donated and food vendors were secured. She was able to have contributions from American evangelist, Beth Moore, singers, Toby Mac and Jamie Grace, and the Murray State University's Men's Basketball team. MSU Coach Steve Prohm even signed a bowl that Victoria painted herself! In order to execute a successful event, Ms. Poston held regular meetings and encouraged the community to volunteer.  Because of her hard work, over 25 food vendors donated to the Empty Bowl Project and $13,122 was raised for community kitchens in Marshall County!

For her dedication to fighting hunger in the United States, we honor Victoria as an Everyday Young Hero.

Song of the WeeK

Will.i.am - "Yes We Can"

"It was a creed written into the founding documents that declared the destiny of a nation.
Yes we can.
It was whispered by slaves and abolitionists as they blazed a trail toward freedom.
Yes we can. Yes we can.
It was sung by immigrants as they struck out from distant shores
And pioneers who pushed westward against an unforgiving wilderness.
Yes we can. Yes we can.
It was the call of workers who organized;
Women who reached for the ballots;
A President who chose the moon as our new frontier;
And a King who took us to the mountain-top and pointed the way to the Promised Land.
Yes we can to justice and equality."
