AlstroemeriaPLANT PERENNIAL ALSTROEMERIA THIS YEAR INSTEAD OF IMPATIENS

In case you haven't heard, the tried-and-true shade annual we all love to plant, Impatiens, has succumbed to downy mildew fungus disease.  This problem manifested itself in South Carolina last year, and most growers have decided to forget about impatiens until disease resistant varieties are developed.

So what should you plant for color all summer in the shade?

I have the perfect solution for you:  Alstroemeria, also known as Princess Lily.  They are available in lots of different colors.

I planted this perennial in my shade garden (morning sun; shade after 1:00 pm) last summer and it bloomed until the first freeze.  The foliage didn't even die all the way back, and it is already looking full and green again, ready to start blooming soon.  I love it!

Southern Landscape Design

This will be the second year we have offered this workshop, which features a walking tour through some adjoining beautiful gardens, to help understand design principles for Southern landscapes.  There is no fee, but please register on-line so we know you are coming.  Space is limited.

April 3, Wednesday, 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

Kid's Day for Carolina Wildlife Care

Kindergarten and elementary school age children will enjoy this spring break day, which services to benefit Carolina Wildlife Care . This local, non-profit organization is dedicated to rehabilitation and release of orphaned and injured wildlife.  The CWC folks will be with us, along with some of the animals in their care.  In addition, each child will get to plant and take home a tomato plant and learn to grow their own food.  Bee Trail Farm will show off a working bee hive (encased in plexiglass, so no worries about bee stings!).  Plus, Ray's Pizza will be with us, serving pizza slices from their Pizza Oven and the Lexington County Sheriff and Fire Departments will be here to work with the children.  There is a $5 donation per child, which goes to CWC.

April 13, Saturday 10:00 am

Plant Photography Workshop

We are working with Bill and Mary Grant, of Grant Digital Media to host a workshop to teach you how to photograph your landscape, using your camera. You've seen their work on television and the web, in Wingard's commercials and many others, and we are excited to have them teach this workshop. No need to purchase a camera, the idea is to use the one that you have, to learn how to take beautiful photos of your landscape. You can use them for decorations, greeting cards and more. After you've taken this class, and take your own photos, then later this summer, we will have a facebook contest that you can enter. The fee for this class is $40 per person and requires registration.  Register on-line.

Saturday, April 20, 10:00 am

Organic Gardening With Dale Miller

Join Dale at this workshop on growing plants, organically. Today, many people are concerned about the use of chemicals in their landscape, especially on their edible plants. You will learn about preventing pests and disease, as well as how to treat those problems without using harsh chemicals.  There is no fee, but please  let us know you're coming by registering on-line

Saturday, April 27, 10:00 am

Plants for the Blazing Sun

We are fortunate to live in a warm climate, and some months are "warmer" than others, particularly the summer months. Even though some plants are rated for "full sun," this workshop addresses the steps required for your plants to do well in the Southern, full sun. There is no charge for this workshop, but please let us know you're coming by registering on-line. Space is limited.
