DCCF LogoCharities have long known that women are more likely to contribute than men, but new research has uncovered some remarkable differences when it comes to each gender's approach to philanthropy.

Where Do Men and Women Give? Gender Differences in the Motivations and Purposes for Charitable Giving is a new study that was released in September by Indiana University's Lilly Family School of Philanthropy.

Previous scholarly work has given us a few hints into some of those differences. For instance, we know that women are more likely to give when they have a personal connection to the organization. Women also tend to be motivated by knowing how their philanthropy helps an individual person.

W
ith men, on the other hand, social norms are a larger consideration. Religious duty or a moral obligation to one's community are far greater drivers for men's generosity. This new study delves more deeply into those differences than any other research to date.

The study grouped the world of charities into 11 different sectors, such as religion, basic needs, arts, broad-community organizations, and so forth. The research found that single women donate considerably more than single men by almost every measure. Women also tend to give to more charities and in larger aggregate amounts. In 10 of the 11 sectors, women typically give more than men. The one exception is giving to broad-community organizations. Single men are more likely to support these kinds of charities and with greater gifts.

Interestingly, single women are also far more likely to cite their political or philosophical beliefs as a significant driver of their philanthropic priorities. Women are more motivated than men by the knowledge that their contribution is honoring another person. Men, on the other hand, are more likely to give to the same organization year after year.

As you would expect, motivations and giving patterns are far more complex in married couples. The study divided charitable contributions from couples into four categories - separately deciding, female-deciding, male-deciding, and jointly deciding.

In separately deciding couples, each partner gives their own share of the family's charitable budget to whomever they like, independent of the other. Hence, their giving patterns tend to reflect those of single men and women.

Grants Awarded to Unity Hospice and YMCA
The Door County Community Foundation recently awarded Unity Hospice and Palliative Care a Sustainability Grant from the Health and Human Needs Fund.  This grant will assist with transportation expenses to meet the Island's increasing need for hospice and palliative care.

Unity has been serving the needs of Washington Island residents for over 15 years and is experiencing a growing demand for services.  When program services are requested, an individualized care plan is created for each patient by a team comprised of Unity staff, medical professionals, social workers, chaplains, grief counselors and trained volunteers.  Once the care plan is determined, Unity programming then provides comprehensive aspects of home care, end-of-life care, ferry transportation and a bereavement program.

"The services provided by Unity are invaluable for community members who are coping with the effects of life-limiting and terminal illness.  Unity delivers compassionate programming that supports patients, families and friends as we move through these major life transitions," said Dick Egan, board secretary of the Door County Community Foundation.

Unity is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit community provider of hospice care, palliative care and grief support in 12 counties throughout Northeast Wisconsin.  A true leader in its field, Unity has the distinction of having opened the state's first hospice in 1977, the state's first non-hospital based palliative care program in 2002 and the area's first hospice residence in 2007. Unity provides a full spectrum of end-of-life care and education benefiting all members of the community.

Unity's mission is "To bring the best end-of-life experience to our communities by delivering unwavering strength, compassion and support."  Every day, nearly 550 patients throughout the region are served by Unity's programming with the help of a committed group of 300 volunteers.

For more information regarding Unity Hospice, please call (800) 990-9249 or visit www.unityhospice.org.

The Door County Community Foundation also awarded the Door County YMCA a Sustainability Grant from the Children & Youth Fund.  This grant provides financial assistance to Door County students who would like to participate in the Youth in Government program.

The YMCA Youth in Government program is part of a statewide and nationwide program that engages hundreds of Wisconsin students every year.  The program is available to all students in grades 7-12 and aims to enable young people to prepare for leadership through participatory training in the theory and practice of developing public policy.

"This exciting, hands-on experience of our government's democratic process inspires and empowers students to take leadership roles in creating positive change in our community," said Jane Stevenson, board member of the Door County Community Foundation.

Youth in Government conferences are led by teens who are elected to office by their fellow delegates.  Each state provides facilities and volunteers from various state departments who act as resources for the students while they debate the issues.  The state's volunteers provide professional guidance for the students as they move through mock committee meetings and debates as well as the voting process involved for bills that their fellow delegates have written and presented.

The mission of the Door County YMCA is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all through program centers located in Fish Creek and Sturgeon Bay.  The Door County YMCA touches the lives of more than 7,800 individuals annually and seeks to strengthen the foundation of our community by providing people of all ages with the resources and solutions for healthy living, youth development and social responsibility.

For more information regarding the Door County YMCA, please call (920) 743-4949 or visit www.doorcountyymca.org.

These are just a few of the grants awarded by the Family of Funds at the Door County Community Foundation. The Community Foundation has several granting programs that offer financial awards to charity from funds such as the Arts Fund, Children & Youth Fund, Green Fund, Health & Human Needs Fund, Education Fund, Historic Preservation Fund, Healthy Water Fund, and the Women's Fund.

List Your Scholarship with the Door County Scholarship Network
The Door County Scholarship Network is now updating its database for the 2016 scholarship season.

The Scholarship Network is the most comprehensive source for local scholarship information for students from Door County. Students of all ages can use this website to search for scholarships that match their background and educational plans. Whether you're pursuing a graduate degree, bachelor's degree, an associate's degree, or a technical certificate, this website is a great place to begin your search for a scholarship.

If you are a scholarship program that provides scholarships to students from any Door County high school, please download and complete the Scholarship Listing Form so we can list your scholarship program in our online database.

There is absolutely no cost for a scholarship program to be listed on this website. In addition, each individual scholarship program will continue to control its own assets, make its own decisions, and award scholarships in their own name. The Scholarship Network's searchable online database is designed to simplify the search process for the students.

We also encourage you to consider accepting the Door County Common Scholarship Application. This comprehensive form was created by local scholarship programs and guidance counselors.
When your scholarship program agrees to accept this common form, you greatly simplify the scholarship application process for our local Door County students.

The Door County Common Scholarship Application is a comprehensive form that collects all the test scores, grades, work experience, volunteerism, etc. that are the same on every scholarship application. It also includes some standard essay questions - yet has ample space (Section 17) for you to ask customized questions of your applicants. If you're ready to accept the Door County Common Scholarship Application, just indicate so when you complete the Scholarship Listing Form (section 5). If you have questions, please contact Christine Henkel at (920) 746-1786.

Please note that a scholarship program does NOT have to accept the Common Application Form to be listed in this online searchable database. Scholarship programs that continue to use their own application form still are welcome to be listed in our database simply downloading and completing the Scholarship Listing Form

Endowments in Action: Friends of Toft Point
The Community Foundation is honored to administer the Friends of Toft Point's Invasive Species Endowment Fund and Operating Endowment Fund.

The Friends of Toft Point, Inc. formed in 2000 in order to protect the Toft Point State Natural Area from unlawful destructive activities. The property is owned by the University of Wisconsin and managed by the UW Green Bay Cofrin Center for Biodiversity

Its mission is to support the management plan of the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay, to help preserve the flora and fauna of this property and to help educate visitors about the natural history and the Toft family history of this State Natural Area and National Natural Landmark.

Its activities include education of visitors, trail maintenance and removal of invasive species. The endowments help preserve and protect Toft Point and assist with the control and eradication of invasive species.

Please consider incorporating gift to this endowment in your estate plans. Speak with your attorney, accountant or other estate planning professional. Or contact the Community Foundation and we'd be glad to help facilitate your generosity.

Many charities entrust the administration of their endowment funds to the Community Foundation. It's a safe and responsible way to manage endowed gifts, long-term assets or operational reserves.

The non-profit community also counts on the Community Foundation's planned giving expertise to facilitate gifts into their endowments. By aggregating these assets under the umbrella of the Community Foundation, economies of scale allow for a far more diversified investment portfolio and lower investment fees than any of the charities could achieve on their own.

The Christmas Gift that also Gives to Charity

"This book is all about the beauty and unexpected treasures of Sturgeon Bay, an historic and vital part of Door County. Those who have spent any amount of time here in the Door understand how special this part of the world can be. And one of the ways we can all maintain the magic of this unique destination is to contribute our time and resources to keep Door County special."

So begins the introduction to a beautiful book celebrating the Secret Treasures of Door County. This first of what we hope will be a series of books is focused on Sturgeon Bay. From bed and breakfasts, to the arts, to remarkable scenery, author and photographer Tom Jordan has captured the beauty and wonder of Sturgeon Bay.

Jordan's 191 page book covers Sturgeon Bay's rich maritime and shipbuilding history, music, theater, artisans, agriculture, fishing, shops, and perhaps most importantly, the people behind the pictures.

Jordan is an international award-winning advertising writer and former Chairman and Chief Creative Officer of Hoffman York Advertising. This book is a labor of love as he is donating 100% of his profits to the Community Foundation to be granted out to the charities of Door County.

Secret Treasures of Door County is available at several locations in Door County and can be purchased online. Visit the Community Foundation's website for more information.
