Celebrate Women! Luncheon Plans

The Women's Fund of Door County eagerly looks forward to our 6th annual Celebrate Women! Luncheon to be held on August 12, 2015 at Stone Harbor Resort in Sturgeon Bay.  Registration will begin at 11:00 am, with the luncheon and program beginning at 11:30.  We are very excited to be presenting the terrific inspirational speaker and author, Liz Murray.

Liz has quite a story to tell - a story so powerful it was made into a movie, Liz shares her fascinating, inspirational story of growing up with two drug addicted parents who she began supporting at age 10. Homeless at age 15, the death of her mother was the wake- up call that made her break-free of her circumstances and pursue a different path for her life. While living on the streets of New York, she completed and graduated from high school in just two years. Overcoming horrible odds, she won a full scholarship and was accepted to Harvard University.

Murray offers one of the most moving, elegant and uplifting tales you will ever hear.  The subject of Lifetime Television's Emmy-nominated original film, Homeless to Harvard, Murray completed her degree at Harvard in 2009. Her memoir, Breaking Night: A Memoir of Forgiveness, Survival, and My Journey from Homeless to Harvard (2010), was an instant success making the New York Times' best-seller list the first week of release. Murray is passionate about speaking on the importance of personal motivation, transforming problems into opportunities, and what it takes to make a difference in people's lives.

This annual fundraiser is very important to the Women's Fund as we continue in our effort to support the women and girls of Door County. Please join us for what is sure to be a very special day!

Miss Manners Program!

The Boys & Girls Club hosted their second annual Ms. Manners Tea Party this month with the help of the Women's Fund. Young girls participate in a six week curriculum learning about manners prior to the fun event. Over two dozen girls and boys enjoyed selecting clothes, getting their hair done, and going on a trolley ride to the Sturgeon Bay Yacht Club. One girl stated, "It was the best day ever!"

We look forward to bringing Door County more events such as this in the future and The Women's Fund appreciates your continued support.

When she thrives, we all prosper!

Mind Trekkers was a Great Success!

"Wow, wow!" That was the excitement we heard as 3,000 participants attended the Mind Trekkers program at Southern Door High School last month. We saw participants walk on water, watch liquid nitrogen blow water 40 ft. into the air, get surrounded by a giant bubble, view a ping pong ball being sent through a soda can, and play a banana piano.

Students from grades 5-8 in Door and Kewaunee counties were guided by students from Michigan Tech University through the exhilaration of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) as part of a field trip.  Many students returned the following day - when open to the public to share the excitement with their parents, grandparents and siblings.

Events like the Mind Trekkers road show are working to engage students in STEM-focused careers and education. According to a study of high school students performed by the Business-Higher Education Forum, only 17 percent of high school seniors were both proficient in math and interested in STEM fields, which is not sufficient to meet the U.S. workforce demand.

We appreciate your support in helping us support causes like this.
